I have been lurking here for a while, but so far I am only playing it causally myself.

I made a patch/mod to the game to hopefully make speedrunning easier. I am calling it the Unofficial Patch 2.1 for now, and you can play it here: https://randomdude4.github.io/UniversalPaperclips/

You can find more information here: https://github.com/RandomDude4/UniversalPaperclips (where you can also download the game to play it locally)

The essential improvements are:

  • No change to the game mechanics so all times are compatible with Patch 2
  • Replaced ads in the top right corner with an in-game-timer (IGT)
  • The IGT in the top corner is clickable and gives possibility to reset all progress and restart the game
  • The IGT (and all internal calculations) now only starts when you first press a button
  • Added decimals to the printed IGT after completing milestones/game (the game always used 0.01 s internally, but it never displayed it)
  • Added dark-mode to be easier on the eyes.
  • Removed display resolution restrictions so you can play it on any device.

What do you all think, could something like this be useful for speedrunning?

For anyone interested, to get notifications when WR are made for games you follow you can change the settings here: https://www.speedrun.com/USERNAME/settings/notifications

Lastly I do not agree that it is useless information to be able to sort/filter games after time since a WR was set (if it was a problem that users can self report the time, then make it time since WR was uploaded to the site). For example I might not follow some really old classic games, because new records are very rarely set and I do not play them myself. However once in a while a new glitches and tricks are found which spurs many speedrunners to start run the game again. It would be nice to be able to find such rare events without having to follow 100+ games that might sometime in the future yield a amazing new WR attempts.

If anyone has any other suggestions for filtering/sorting that would help users discover interesting new WRs for non-popular games I would be happy to hear them out.

Personally I do not use twitter, hence that solution does not work for me.

I am interested in following the speedrunning standings in many different games. Sometimes I become interested in a new game when I read about some recent new world record with new tricks etc.

Right now it is not possible to find which games have recently had a new world record in any category.

It would be very helpful if you could sort the game list by shortest-to-longest time since the top time/world record was updated in any if its categories.

Even better would be the possibility to only sort based on specific categories (Any%, etc.) and/or combined with popularity of the game. E.g. removing games with less than 10 runs or similar so that obscure games are not shown.

If this functionality already exists I would be interested in knowing how to use it. If it does not exist I think it would be a good addition to the site.
