Hey all, Thank you for participating and for your feedback. These surveys are realls experimental and exploratory, because there aren't other surveys out there to base these ones upon. So I am really sorry if some of you thought them to be repetitive, but asking in different extremes and aksing for many different parameters is a good start if I want to elaborate on those surveys. Also you shouldn't anwer both surveys but that is my fault. I should have communicated it in a better way. Anyhow, I will incorporate some of the feedback into my surveys. And Mitsune - It is a very good answer to say, that if something demotivates you about speedrunning, that you would quit it. It really is a insightful answer.

Hey guys,

I am currently writing my MA-Thesis about speedrunning at the Leopold-Franzens-Universität Innsbruck (Austria) and I set up two surveys to gather informations why people watch speedruns or run themselve.

I would really appreciate it if you could participate so that i can get as many data as possible. This is - as fare as I know - the first scientific survey to take a look at speedrunning and therefore a big data-sample would be really important.

Survey viewers: https://www.soscisurvey.de/test143985/

Survey runners: https://www.soscisurvey.de/test143987/

Please feel free to spread the surveys and thank you in advance for your help.

Thank you all very much. You input is really valuable to me and helps me a lot with my research about this topic. I am going to put everything you posted into consideration and I won't put any on opinion as the one "true" opinion. Additionaly I am very aware that some of the resources I linked in my first post sould be taken very cautiosly and your posts helped me a lot. I think my baseline will be that cheating isn't occuring a lot and I am going to take a look into the reasons why cheaters are cheating. Also thank you very much for the links and resources as I am also going to creat a timeline of cheating in speedrunning. I would just post one last question: When was the time that the community shifted from one global SDA-ruleset to a community- and game-driven ruleset for every game? I wasn't able to point this change at a specific time. And was there a global ruleset in the time before SDA started? Do you know any forums or websites from the time before SDA?

Oh, I am so sorry, I thought there is a controller-cam rule for Yoshi's Island Any%, but I was wrong. And I am not interessted in specific singular events, but rather how cheating and counter-cheating-rules evolved over time. For example, when was it, that a video-proof became mandatory and how is this intertwined with technological progress. At a time, where there weren't any viable options of screen-capturing, how did they act against cheaters and false times? I hope that you get what I'm looking for and thank you for your input.

Hey guys,

I am currently writing an articel about the history of cheating in speedrunning form a smal german games-magazine. Therefor I would be interesseted in any informations you may have about this topic? Do you know of any relevant cases of cheating in speedrunning? Of any relevant rulings in communities to prevent illegitimate runs? For example: Which community was the first to introduce controller-camers as mandatory to verify, that the sent-in-video isn't TAS? Anything about cheating in speedrunning would be really useful.

I already researched myself and found videos of Apollo Legend, RWhiteGoose, retro and so on, but maybe the collectiv wisdom of the speedrun-communtiy can help me a little bit.

And lastly, pls excuse my bad english.

Thank you all very much, those are very good hints for my research. Do you maybe even know about games, in which a glitch/glitches cause the sound to shut off or glitch?

Thanks for your hint, Already thought about blindfolded runs, but there should be runs out there, which also make heavy use of audio cues outside of bilndfolded runs. Isn't there a audio cue based Skip in Majoras Mask? I'd still need some exmaples outside of blindfolded runs.

Hi there,

I'm searching for Speedruns, which make heavy use of audio cues. Currently I'm working on a scientific paper about Sound in Speedruns, for which i need a lot of examples how sound is used in Speedruns. I've found a few games on my own, but maybe you guys can help me out on this. I appreciate every hint and thank you very much in advance.
