Thank you, everybody, for your very helpful replies. I definitely consider adding a few additional items on top of the 14% to make this run feasible while keeping a good challenge. This is in fact not my very first playthrough of Super Metroid; and I learned while trying out the Randomizer that the Zebetites don’t respawn once they are destroyed. This means that there is the slower option of making a few trips between Mother Brain’s room and the recharge station nearby at the very end if I can’t get the clip. Meanwhile, I had a first brief practice session for the Gravity Jump to enter Lower Norfair and it seems doable if I put a little more effort into it. I will definitely have ample time to prepare for this run and your notes will help me without a doubt! Thanks again!

Hey there! I’m interested in trying a Low% playthrough of Super Metroid for the first time. As this is supposed to be primarily a challenge run for me, I don’t care about going fast, so I was wondering if any of the 14% definitions are possible without glitches or speedrunning strats. Personally, I’m fine with infinite bomb jumps or using the wall jump to get to Kraid, but I wouldn’t want the run to depend on the mockball for example. (In this particular case doing the Spore Spawn fight would be completely alright for me!)

This being said, can any of the 14% definitions be done as a casual (yet challenging) playthrough? And if so, which one would be the most beginner-friendly? Or if not, what would be the lowest possible completion percentage for a non-speedrun?

PS: In case this matters, I would be using the Switch Online release on a Switch that was purchased in and is set to Canada.

It's great to see that 100% is officially a thing now!

That seems likely. I have been thinking about using different languages, but have not tried it out yet at all! As with other runs, it is definitely worth looking into this. But first I guess I will need to get better in the English version. :)

Yes, that sounds very reasonable. If I get to work on the routing, I will let you know. :)

Routing the 100% run will be the next challenge! Have you done anything in this regard yet, @Seydie? I would be interested in putting some work into it in the near future. Better notes on where exactly all the money and "crafting items" (sticks, rocks, etc.) are located might also lead to further improvements to the any% route!

Regarding the rules for the 100% run I would suggest to make the following amendments:

  • It should be made clear that all special items, pets and records must not only be obtained, but also placed (so they actually show up during the short scene in the credits).
  • Moreover, I think that it would be important to stress that all marbles should not only be obtained, but also brought to Sue. This might additionally result in some interesting routing options.

Overall, a 100% run should be a run that covers almost every Steam achievement - with the exception of "Connoisseur of the Monsieur" (right?) and possibly "Clear the Air" if a good route does not require to step on all Badshrooms in the room with Bad Attitude Onion (but this remains to be seen for now).

The rules should perhaps also clarify that not all gold and crafting items in the game need to be obtained - it is sufficient to gather only whatever is required to finish the game and meet the 100% definition.

What is your opinion on these suggestions? If I am coming across like too much of a stickler for details, I could also write a draft for the rules and post it here, so you can add it to the page. :)

Congratulations on solidifying your spot as the world record holder, @Seydie! That's a great time - and it's already faster than the run I was about to submit. :)

Regarding the timing: You seemed to stick to the original method. Would you like to keep it that way or change after all? This would of course affect the time that I will submit as well.

Yes, I had the same thought! So I am happy that the game is now represented here.

I also did another run earlier and the additional conversation with Morizora at the very end seems to add roughly 50 seconds to the total time. Best of luck to you today! And I hope that I will have my own submission ready very soon!

Hey there (mostly Seydie right now, I guess),

I was quite glad to see that Rakuen now has a page here - even though it also saddened me a little that I had not managed to submit my own run earlier. As a matter of fact, I was doing some routing myself a few weeks back, took a lot of notes and even did a first run; but then I got distracted by other things in my life, so I never recorded a proper attempt. Also, I am still not very knowledgeable when it comes to speedrunning, so just doing a somewhat decent local recording and uploading it is quite a big project for me.

One thing I noticed that surprised me a little bit, Seydie, is that you decided to stop the timer prior to entering Morizora's cave at the end of the game. Personally, I would have suggested to use the click on Morizora's final text box ("Your wish is granted") or the fade to white that follows as the moment to stop the timer because the player still needs to make inputs during this scene. Only after this (during the farewell scene at Morizora's boat) does the player lose control. It is of course not a big difference, but it seemed more plausible to me, so I wonder how you might feel about changing it?

In any case, I really hope to submit my own run quite soon as well. Seeing you upload yours will hopefully give me the necessary determination. :)

Hey everybody,

my name is Markus and like so many others I was introduced to speedrunning through GDQ. I would like to give it a try myself from time to time and submitted my first run to an extremely RNG-heavy category in "Don't Starve: Reign of Giants" earlier today. I have no idea if it will be accepted, but I am here to learn and eventually do more runs.

So hello to all of you and keep up the great work! :)
