The new settings come packaged with the game, so they are perfectly valid to keep on. :)
Similar situation for other Nightdive remasters; Turok 2 for example, we allow ledge grabbing for runs.
As long as it doesn't affect gameplay to give a player some advantage, it's fine with me
Yes, verified records need to maintain their validity if it's to keep a space on this site.
Typically, if a run gets reported as having a broken link, then that runner is asked to update the link or it gets removed. You can set your videos to unlisted (not private) if you don't want your run in the general public space.
Just a thought, but shouldn't this board be renamed to match the game? EX just refers to the engine that the unofficial port runs on, and might create some confusion when people search for it. The categories could be just Any%, Low%, 100%, while renaming the other 3 as: EX Version. Just my thoughts
If there's enough interest from the community for it. Generally, I don't like to add things for only one request, as that's taking away from my time on a potentially empty board. I have been considering removing the "All Campaigns" category from the board for this reason, because it only has my terrible run on it so far.
You don't need a leaderboard for it though. If it's an idea you want to pursue, then do it and maybe others will take interest and want an official category for it.
Maybe if there were enough interest in it, it could be added to the board.
First, I would suggest reading through these forums before posting. We already have a thread on this exact subject. I'm just going to paste what user TomatoTom posted in response:
"Technically it goes down to practice and not getting stuck on anything as best as possible. The basic techniques is strafe running. Strafing makes u move faster at all times so its best to hold it throughout the run. If u using keyboard. Its WA, WD, SA, SD. If u using controller, point ur stick at the four corners like a square."
Adding the other difficulties would not see much action if you ask me. You can break it down like this: Be Gentle offers the FASTEST possible times as it is the easiest difficulty. There's fewer enemies, you receive more supplies and take less damage to help you finish the game quickly. Watch Me Die offers the greatest CHALLENGE, as it is on the opposite end of the spectrum of the things I mentioned previously.
As for Pacifist, this is a very different kind of Doom game. There are many triggers that depend on killing enemies to progress and really wouldn't leave much left for ILs. You only have a handful of levels that can be done pacifist, which I can't imagine would garner much interest.
As you are the first to ask about these, I can't really justify adding them to the leaderboard. If there is more interest in the future I will, but currently there is almost none.
That's a good question.
I'd say since the demon keys only serve the purpose of upgrading the Unmaker and closing the portals at the end, it shouldn't matter for ILs. I'm only looking for 100% kills and secrets to verify them, and demon keys are not tracked as either. In the IL for Hectic, we require you to take the intended route to the exit (behind the 3 key gate), but in full-game runs you only need to hit 100%, since Features is unlocked through different means. This avoids the trouble of having people upload 1 sec Hectic ILs, which no one would want to watch.
As for using "Restart Level", I see no reason not to allow this. The in-game timer resets itself and makes you pistol start by either using the menu or after dying. Just as long as you're not loading a save into the level, which messes with the IGT, then it's perfectly fine.
Realistically, video would be required for every run, but yes, anyone verifying a Max% run would need to watch closely during Staging Area. As for other levels, whatever satisfies the results screen is fine by the rules. Any spawn prevention is allowed because it won't affect those results. It's all up to the game to decide how much is done when you hit that exit switch.
The thing with this port is that the features menu can already be accessed during any level, without the need for completing Hectic. Just start up the game and it's visible for anyone to make use of. I would say that as long as the results screen satisfies the 100% kills and all possible secrets, then completing Hectic that way is fine by the rules.
The reason I didn't want to include the fun levels is, as I said, they are just a series of ILs and we already have a leaderboard for those. Maybe if this were on the original hardware it would be a thing, since it requires gameplay to unlock, but it's already available from the start. That's my take on it anyway.
If others feel differently, like they would prefer to stay in-line with the N64 version, then they are welcome to comment. However, this category has never been explored to its fullest extent before, so nothing's really set in stone. Part of the reason I added it to this leaderboard is because I'd love to see it showcased some day.
It has come to my attention that in some levels it is actually impossible to achieve 100% secrets, because the devs forgot to flag some of these areas as secrets. Instead, you are only required to get all possible secrets for the given level.
For reference, I used this thread on the Doomworld forums: https://www.doomworld.com/forum/topic/110362-new-doom-64-speedrunning-category-wmd-max/ and I believe this is a solid ruleset to follow with the exception of one. Including the "fun" levels as part of the category would require use of the features menu, which adds in some unnecessary tedium to the run. It essentially turns it into a series of ILs once you beat The Absolution, since they're all pistol start using this method.
I'll leave this open for discussion, but for now, if a level cannot be accessed through gameplay, it is not required for a valid Max% run.
