@kirkq Can you point me to where this discussion occurred? We were in the process of adding moderators/verifiers when this change was reverted, so an update on what the current plan is would be greatly appreciated so we can get things moving forward.

I could help moderate if needed.

Good luck getting a category like 100% added, I'd be surprised if it was considering that there is still a lack of itemless categories, random restrictions for the item categories, and overall very poor leaderboard layout and organization, not to mention that none of the mods seem to communicate on the forums very much. My suggestion would be to just define 100% yourself in terms of what rankings you have to achieve, etc. and simply go ahead and do whatever runs/races you please, no need to wait for a response.

Sub categories could be added to allow for there to be itemless categories for every single category. I'm not sure why these haven't been added yet, as itemless categories are far superior as they remove all the RNG nonsense from the runs. I also liked the idea of allowing strategic/basic item settings for the item categories because this removed all the chaotic items that ruin runs and leaves in the items that actually make runs more interesting (mushrooms, shells, etc.). Just some ideas of mine, but only having normal item categories for nitro, retro, and individual cups is not good for helping this game grow as a speed game.

If someone were smart enough to time the difference for themselves, instead of being ignorant and taking someone's word for it (when there is no evidence to support it) then it wouldn't have been legal, either. Seems to me that nobody made the effort to prove that it was faster to cause the ban of ISO loading, so Veman used it because it was legal. Regardless of whether or not he knew it was faster, or even if he told people it wasn't, it was still legal at the time and was therefore not cheating.

Utah, USAJcool1147 years ago

Personality is irrelevant. Whatever drama he stirred is irrelevant. It's a leaderboard that displays and ranks times. He technically never cheated, as ISO loader was legal back then. Therefore he should be allowed to submit now, provided he has video proof.

Utah, USAJcool1147 years ago

It basically isn't cheating though, because it was still legal. It only takes one person to time the difference and figure out it saves more than 2 seconds. Did nobody think to see for themselves if he was actually saving time by ISO loading?

Aside from all said drama, considering he never cheated, he shouldn't be banned from submitting to a leaderboards, provided he can supply adequate proof. All that does is make the leaderboards less accurate as someone's times are missing from it. This is coming from someone who used to use an ISO loader for certain games when it was legal at the time. Just remove the ISO loaded times, move on. No ban needed.

There are no inputs after you break the goal tape on the last level in story mode, just as there are no inputs after you break the goal tape on any last level in challenge mode. The only exception to this is story mode any% because in order to skip the final stage you have to hit stage select.

I agree with this 100%. Implementing subcategories could easily allow this, and would make the leaderboards look a lot cleaner overall. This could also allow for there to be itemless categories for the individual cups, which would be pretty nice to have. The fact that anyone would rather run with the items on amazes me, it's 100% RNG. Might as well have the option not to.

That's the problem, there are no "no-items" categories other than 32 tracks. Nitro, Retro, and every individual cup only has item categories. Also, an added benefit of doing Basic instead of Normal is that you can get guaranteed triple mushrooms on every track, making it considerably different from no-items. No point in enabling items that do nothing but slow you down randomly, makes no sense.

Utah, USAJcool1147 years ago

"If it is put on Basic, there is no challange." From what I can tell, turning this option on just removes a majority of the RNG from the run. There is nothing particularly more challenging about doing a run where you're prone to lose any amount of time by doing absolutely nothing, the only challenging part is actually taking enough to time to grind and literally speedrun RNG. Had I known that choosing basic was an option I would have done some runs myself, considering no-item categories still don't exist outside of 32 tracks for some reason. Nice to see the mods doing work here.

If you boot up the game with practice codes loaded and load a savestate without saving one previously, you will teleport to the exact same spot as in the video.

The problem is that there is a no items category for 32 tracks in Mario Kart Wii, and no other no items category in the game. From what I've learned, other no items categories were added at one point and removed by one mod, and the only reason no other no item categories exist is because one single mod won't allow them to be there. There is no reason for no items categories to exist for the game, removing items takes out RNG aspects and allows for a speedrun dedicated to how skillfully you can play the game. The categories could be split into subcategories for better aesthetic and organization, and on top of that there are multiple people that will run these categories. There is literally no reason that they shouldn't exist. This is why there needs to be new moderators, so that one single mod doesn't have the ability to add and remove whatever categories that they choose to without a general consensus between at least the other moderators.
