thread: Speedrunning
DrZULUL3 years ago

I've recently opened a community for speedrunning Link It Up!, and already had 3 different runners excluding me.

  • Game requires precise and efficient cursor movements for nodes' manipulation, in order to optimize and improve your run. Consequently, each run is unique and there is always place for improvement, unless you are inhuman.
  • Anyone can give it a try. Game is free and playable on browser on 3 different sources. Downloading the game is also available.
  • Game is fairly short to speedrun, 30 levels with collectibles if interested in 100%. Current 1st placed run for any%-glitchless is just above 5 minutes.

I'd love to see more speedrunners competing :)

No worries, it's alright. FreeButtPlugs submitted a run yesterday using the same glitch and I explained it to him. I added it to the rules immediately, and planned on posting about it later this week. Didn't expect someone to use the same glitch a day later xD

Any%-Glitchless forbids usages of glitches, whether the glitch is already known or not. You are allowed to use glitches in Any%-Glitch (don't be confused with tool-assited, frame-advance, etc. that are forbidden anyway).

If you suspect that you found something new that could be considered a glitch, you are required to post about it in this thread and ask the moderators about it. Submitting a run with a new glitch in any%-glitchless will still be rejected. Accidental usage of a glitch will also be rejected.

  • Demonstration: Taken from @fluffyhead101's any%-glitch run.
  • Demonstration: Taken from @fluffyhead101's submission for any%-glitchless.

  • When you hold a node while resetting the line, or activating the switch, the node is supposed to return back to its original place. However, it stays held which can be exploited to save crucial time. This is a bug due to poor game design.

  • Moving nodes is a significant part of the game, and this glitch supresses it.

Nice one! Unfortunate though :( What TAS are you doing?

The text area when you edit/add rules is quite small. It gets messy when you have formatted stuff and there are quite a few rules. A bigger text area wouldn't hurt, and in just a few clicks can be modified.

A preview feature would require more effort. But would be more comfortable when formatting, instead of saving, refreshing and repeat.

When the site's tab isn't being viewed, or simply when it is not opened, have browser push notifications that pop out on screen.

  • Would be nice too if the site's notifications popped in real time inside the site as in what we see in the top right bar, because you have to refresh the site in order to see new notifications (regardless whether push notifications for browser will be added or not).

@fluffyhead101 There must be guides on the internet on how to do it. I never owned a Mac, nor had to bind left click to scroll wheel, so I can't exactly guide you to the right place.

@FreeButtPlugs, capture didn't pick up sound?

@fluffyhead101 Oh wow I've just searched what a drag click is, and it is completely different than what I thought. In that case, there shouldn't be split sections just for this purpose. It's up to you what you find more efficient and faster, either binding scroll (if works) or drag clicking.

If you're asking because of 100%, I've updated the rules recently suggesting to download the game. Download it from Gamejolt, because then collectibles (green balls) don't disappear if you have collected them in previous runs. Also the collectible achievement doesn't block the last orb in level 30 (which is more comfortable when retiming for the last frame).

If you insist on using the browser, even though I highly suggest to download the game for 100%, you can delete the cookies' folder. I use Opera, this is how it looks. Again, I don't recommend using the browser for 100%.

@fluffyhead101, in the glitched run you just submitted, how exactly did you spam the node so fast? It sounds so fast almost like an auto clicker. In the previous thread you said you're using "drag click", what do you mean by that? Isn't every mouse able to drag click? Unless you are using laptop's mouse pad, which is inefficient..

@FreeButtPlugs, have you tried binding scroll to interact with nodes? Is it 100% efficient?

Two splitted sections for the glitched category seems a bit messy, don't you think?

lmao this is hilarious. Definitely can create insane shortcuts. I'll make a glitch category if you're up to it. Just make sure if you submit runs, that we can hear the game's sound effects - https://imgur.com/jxRdVpz.

But obviously, if you submit runs to the glitch category, make sure your run is faster than the current 1st place in any% glitchless.

Ok so I found this node glitching. Haven't tried on other levels yet, cause I barely managed to replicate it. No idea yet how to do it other than spamming.

I've just tried doing it, but failed. How fast are you even spamming it? What do you mean you slowed down the game?

Haha nice finding it. Doesn't seem to be faster though. I briefly compared our both runs on level 5, takes around 7 seconds for both us. Can possibly be sub 6 seconds if we're efficient in timings. Seems like this shortcut is about the same time or slightly slower.
