and BBG too, which is why it's called cointoss. 50-50 chance of getting it bc hit detection only occurs every other frame
yes you can use the original rom. it's just that most runners would do it on the pellson rom so you can easily know your run time. and it's easier for the mods to retime your run, so it's recommended that you use the pellson ips patch
you can get it here https://github.com/pellsson/smb just load the SMB1 rom on your emulator then load the IPS patch it's also in the resources page! https://www.speedrun.com/smb1/resources
[warning: long post]
what i do for the first 1-2 pipe jump is that generally have to wait until the tones stop and then jump a bit after that happens (this is assuming you have a minor slowdown when making the first of the two small koopa-goomba-goomba jumps). you should be around a block or a bit less from the first of the three goombas when you jump
the second pipe jump, idk how to be consistent at it. just gotta practice it so that you can eyeball the height of your jump from the front lip of the first pipe
for the first and second 8-1 pipe jumps, jump to the lips on an upward motion, not on a downward arc. this means you'll have to do quick taps, in a double jump kind of way. audio cues for first pipe jump is after the second note after a brief pause (this is assuming you've run straight prior this section)
i kinda use an audio cue for the second jump but what i usually remember is that i just jump like you did the first one. there is a more fitting audio cue for a back lip jump and then jumping off of that to avoid killing one of the three goombas below. i suggest you check out Tecate's run for that. it's a neat audio cue for both jump to and from the backlip
the third pipe jump is the one that gives me nightmares!! but what i do is i do practice jumps on the part just after the star block and two koopas. jump over the gaps then jump on the two chocolate bar blocks then jump immediately after. it gives you some muscle memory for the pipe jump
hope this helps HAHA it's a lot to take in but at the end of the day it's a big help to practice and watch other runners and eyeball where and when they do their jumps, and then just go along the strat that you feel most comfortable with. you'll get the rhythm eventually! glgl
alright, thank you for responding to the thread. really appreciate it! will delete this post in a bit
the strat i do in the 4-2 wrong warp is that i start holding left after the block you hit before the wrong warp pipe has reached its peak. or just after the block finishes its sound effect. this is assuming you do a full jump. works like a charm for me
