Removal/addition of the 2.1/2.2 categories.

As we're all aware, the tidbits of 2.2 have been worked on for a while and it looks unlikely for another 2.1.x update past 14 before 2.2 is released. With that, I want to ask on if we should keep the categories for 2.1.14 on this site or if we should remove them in favour of 2.2.x. This is purely a community choice but I want to make sure before winding everyone up with silly updates to the page. 2.1.14 looks like it will be a minor difference from 2.2 but whether or not people want to run 2.1.14 and not 2.2 is a community choice. Thank you for your support.

As far as I'm concerned once 2.2.x is released I'm okay with not seeing 2.1.14 anymore, I will always be running the game on the latest versions, unless some wads prevent me from doing so.

Well with that said, what of 2.0? Should that still be a thing due to its obsolescence? Or is it unique enough to stay up? Again, I only want what's best for you guys running the game.

I wanna take the wait and see stance here. It might be worth it to keep 2.1.14 around as I'm personally feeling 2.2 may prove to be a significant update, regardless of whenever it gets released (but I don't think it will be that soon)

I think the category should be saved because it takes a lot of time to do a run there. At least it's my opinion since I like to watch runs even from 1.09.4 nowadays. But still, have you seen what happened to 2.0.5 - 2.0.7 time-attack records when 2.1 came out, or even heard about them? There's understandably no list of them anymore since not many actually cared about them anymore. I guess there won't be a huge difference when 2.2 comes.

It's the sad truth there, Ors. I guess it will depend on the amount of runs coming in vs the new category. Only reason a SS category of 1.09.4 and 2.0.7 was because they were their own entity and are vastly different to each other. With this new update I only see a few changes but it would probably still knock 2.1.14 into obsolescence. Don't let that stop you submitting, though. ;)

I guess there's almost as big changes as there was between 2.0 and 2.1... At least I've heard of many Deep Sea and Arid Canyon changes. Many other are rather surprise. For example, at least I didn't know about the new Techo Hill 2 in 2.1 before release. Anyway, at least we can hope SS will do better than the shorter record attack records. Not going to stop submitting. ;)

It definitely depends on how much changes between 2.1.14 and 2.2, but if the rumored completion of Arid Canyon does come for 2.2 then I'd say it's definitely worth it to keep both the 2.1.X and 2.2 categories, so long as they both generate their own interest.

The reason why 2.0.x and 2.1.x are kept different, is because of the physics changes. You have more air control in 2.1.x, as well as the removal of the Tails strafe bug.

It may not be noticeable, but there very may be changes in 2.2.x as well, so I suggest you keep noteworthy versions separate from one another, just for the sake of simplicity, safety, and the effort of those on 2.1.x.

Why would you remove something that works and is already there?

Removal is a very serious action, and I believe that you should give it a good amount of time, see how 2.2.x is, and decide there. At least give everyone a chance to catch up on the version.

To be blunt, I feel that no speedrun categories for older versions should exist ¤period¤. It adds an excessive number of categories for no real reason. Besides, where do you stop? Should we have categories for SRB2 Christmas? Halloween?

"Why would you remove something that works and is already there?"

This kind of attitude causes bloat.

@Inuyasha. This is worth discussion for the people who'd be running it. Of course I see what you mean though. It was just if people wished to run 2.1.14 still for whatever reason then they could. Knowing the difference between 2.0 and 2.1.14 I was aware there was maybe going to be some runners of the older version for strafe fly tails. And of course a few different kinds of controls (like losing momentum faster letting go of forward and so on). It's nice to see your input, my only deal was if I made it a vanilla leaderboard then we may have to keep deleting the leaderboards every so often. Message back with your opinions and thanks for commenting. ^.^

I have an idea of sorts.

Obviously, the way we are keeping it right now, it will get cluttered as more versions come in, so what if we instead put older significant versions of Vanilla SRB2 into their own little "sub-games" using the ROM hacks/mods section (where we have TMR currently)?

Perhaps this way we could keep the newest version of SRB2 up front, and also not have to keep deleting runs whenever a new version comes out (and overall it won't be a clusterfuck of categories up front, at least), but move them instead.

That said, I entirely understand Inuyasha's viewpoint, though it's still meh to trash runs every time a new version comes out, in my opinion.

I'm not sure if adding the games under the sub-rom folder will work.

Guessing by the response I've deduced we might have to have versions that are being run (so 2.1.14 Sonic,Tails,Knux,Ultimate Sonic, v1.09.4 Sonic) and get rid of the rest unless someone has a run, in which case they'll have to place it on the forum to say and we'll see if it's viable to re add the category.

It's a bit of a pain seeing v1.09.4 as a "Rom Hack/Mod" as it is pretty annoying as it's inaccurate.

Comment below for opinions.

Just to revisit this. I've changed the leaderboard up a little, kept the categories for runs which are being played (all emeralds is being played, no one is submitting times). I've decided to keep 2.1.14 and the vanilla 2.2 version categories due to how different they are, but I've decided to remove 2.0 entirely. It should work out better this way, I hope everyone is satisfied with the changes. Thanks guys
