So hello, my name's Zorkle, I'm from France and I'm looking for a game to run to introduce myself to speedrunning.
I'm looking for a game that can be done in 1h (more or less), without " run killers glitches" (because I don't wanna end 40 mins run with a bug or something I misplayed).
Looking for any kind of game but would be great to have a "casual approach", I'm not afraid of learning patterns to execute glitches but not the kind of glitches that took days to learn. Would be great if I can start running the game in 2 or 3 days.
Thanks for reading and thanks for the help/advice you'll give.
PS: Excuse me for my approximate English, hope you won't mind 🙂

How about a Mario Party game? There’s not really any glitches you need to learn, so it’s mostly just strategizing.

I'll write it, seems to be a good idea, yeah, those games might bring a lot of fun. Thanks for the game.

It seems you may want to run glitchless categories in games which can last 30-60 minutes.
I would recommend you to also state what type of games you would like to run, as they are all very different from each other (3D platformers, 2D sidescroller platformers, Metroidvanias, racing games, RPG, first person shooters, etc).
Otherwise this thread is just gonna end up with people throwing a bunch of random games.

Well, to be honest, I don't really mind which type of game it is, it could be 2d or 3d (perhaps 3d is a bit hard for me to begin with). I'm just looking for a "funny" game to speedrun. Except for racing games, I'm open to every type of game ( perhaps also no puzzle games). So yes I know that's kinda vast.
I think RPGs or 2D games suits me more, but open to any kind of game.

You offered one of the most RNG heavy games, lol. Chance time can kill a Mario Party game instantly.

What console (s) do you have? The Harvest Moon community has a lot of casual runners, and a few who just play for fun if you're interested: https://discord.gg/NTpTUh

I have a Nintendo switch and a strong pc. Would prefer something I can run on my pc because it's easy to record, I can use an emulator if needed btw.

If you have DOSBOX, I know Operation Neptune is a good 2D sidescroller with precise movements. Learning games are a bit unexplored. There are some math problems, but they're all predictable and most questions are avoided.

Well thanks all for your ideas, I found my game! I enjoyed playing Neon Abyss which is quite recent, and there aren't many runs on it right now so I'll start speedrunning it soon! I don't have to learn the game since I played it casually. Feel free to come to check the speedrun.com page of Neon Abyss if you're interested in the game, I'll also probably try to create some specific runs which can be funny.

Thank you for your answers, great speedrunning everyone!

Well, one suggestion I can give you is to try running Kingdom Hearts: Birth by Sleep, a game that I run myself and can be completed under one hour on PS4 version and a little more than that on PSP. It has two glitches that can potentially kill a run, one is in Aqua's campaign: if you have 75% of your spellweaver bar and activate Philip's prompt on Dragon Maleficent fight, it can softlock the game. The other one is in Terra's Story, in Braig fight: you can get your shotlock blocked for sometime if you hit him in a very specific time with your shotlock, but I've ran the game hundreds of times and none of the glitches have ever happened to me.

It's a very fun game to learn and not very complicated, it's more focused on perfecting execution in fights, getting good rng and moving and menuing better.

I recommend stuff like Mario kart wii cups, Minecraft, or clicker heroes

I have a world record (The run still has to be verified.) The world record is in Mario Kart Wii

You should look at speedruns of games you enjoyed casually. That's a good place to start.

I'm a noob, but I would say find a game you love enough to play over and over and over and over.....because that's what you are going to be doing.

May I suggest Streets Or Rage 4?

Runs are roughly 50-60 minutes, although your first few will probably be closer to 1:05-1:15, and optomised is closer to 40.

There is only one known place to lock the game and it is within the first few screens, so you're not going to get an hour into it and crash/freeze your game.

The patterns are roughly the same every run - there are tiny instances of RNG with the spawns but they can largely be manipulated to ensure a consistent route. Then it's just all about grinding out runs to get better.

Also there are 17 characters to choose from and five difficulties (plus a Boss Rush mode for each character) so you will absolutely be able to find at least one category that suits you. Prior to the patch, we had almost 800 runs so despite all of the categories, there is competition here as well.

Now is the best time to join in as a new balance patch dropped on Monday and the boards reset, so interest is high. It suits what you want:

- roughly sub hour
- no run killer glitches
- you could be "speedrunner ready" after a few playthroughs
- major tech is memorising patterns (and which combos kill)

I have begun this speedrunning hobby with Wii Party U. It's not very popular, and getting a record involves 10% skill and 90% luck, so anyone that's willing to grind can start racking up world records on it. I think...
