Saw the new run, congrats on finding the new techs! Two questions:

  1. How are the OoB done?

  2. For mods, now that there are skips that heavily impact routing, should we separate any% and glitchless into two separate categories? This is pretty standard for RPG runs, for example https://www.speedrun.com/ff6

I was coming to post about the inability to do OOB and I didn't realize the boards had already been split.. no announcement or anything?

i didn't think an announcement was really necessary

I haven't been able to replicate the OoB either. On his Twitch, he included an input overlay, but I haven't gotten it to work yet. My guess is that he's on an older patch, as I know the earlier releases had some wall / OoB issues that were later patched. Would love for Mountebank to explain his process though.

As for separating the categories, I think it makes perfect sense how much OoB impacts the route. There's no reason not to separate and it lets runners play their preferred route, etc.

I think it would have been valuable to have a discussion of some sort. There's really no other place I am aware of right now to discuss speedrunning the game. My main concern is that since the OOB glitches appear to mainly be hardware-related and so far restricted to one player who can actually do them, any other glitches that are found in the future that can be performed by any player will not even really be the same category/run. So in effect any glitched run now will still be different than the current Any% since only one person can actually do those specific glitches. I would have much preferred to have the current Any% Glitchless be called Any% No OOB to leave that door open to any future discoveries.

I did DM with Mountebank and they said they are on current patch but believes it is due to their PC being relatively poor hardware-wise, and generating additional lag that any reasonable PC is not going to be able to do. So unless we can somehow kneecap our hardware we won't be able to OOB the way they do. I have not yet checked to see if the OOB are possible on older patches but that is on my To-Do list.

I have a pretty decent PC, game running at 180fps, I was able to clip OoB on the underriver on the same corner that the WR does, but wasn't able to clip back in. I'll also mention it was extremely lucky and didn't really have any strat, as when I tried again I couldn't do it.

Spain

Update, just did it again, the strat that seems to work for me is to get into the corner, tap up a little bit then spam left and right. It's unreliable, but it does work sometimes for me

Now, clipping back in, however, I think the collissions are different because it's not happening.

Okay I just tried what I believe are Patch 0 and Patch 1 and I wasn't able to OOB on either on the first skip done in the WR run.

Spain

Ive been able to clip OoB on the underriver, before the tiger fight, and in the garden.

I feel like we should set up a discord server to discuss this more thoroughly if needed

Love seeing the discussion! My personal thoughts are that Glitchless and Any % are separate categories, which is normal in most speedrunning communities. Any % can also be multiple categories if we wanted to separate out certain glitches. Using FF6 as an example again, there are categories for Any % (All glitches), Any % Sketch (All glitches except one really powerful one) and Any % No Sketch (All glitches except two powerful ones). Not an expert on FF6 runs, just saying it's not uncommon to separate out. If further glitches are found other than OoB, the categories can always be updated again - no reason to worry about hypothetical glitches right now.

That being said, if people are correct that this glitch is hardware related and not repeatable by most runners, then we should decide as a community whether it's a valid run / route. My personal opinion is that if it's not repeatable, we shouldn't allow it, as then we have a category basically for just one person. That will take some work on our ends, as runners, to determine whether we can replicate it and, if we can, what it takes to do so.

So for now, I think it is appropriate to keep the categories separate, until we figure out if it's replicable and/or there are other glitches.

Japan

i remember using the resolution setting to glitch out of the map, but not because of the resolution, the FPS would go down for a split second while you do that, then you walk out
