Yes, you can't do that with Mojang and most other sites so I guess usernames there are more valuable Also @Hi was talking about speedrun.com because that was a reply to my message about getting around this site's alt account rule But you can request an inactive username if
a user has not logged-in for 6 months and has no runs submitted
from Request Abandoned Username
But you can request an inactive username if a user has not logged-in for 6 months and has no runs submitted from Request Abandoned Username
I did not know about this part of the support hub existing, I guess it got added when I took a break from the site. Even with this however, knowing how the moderation of this site is, I don't think more than half of the requests get seen and approved by the staff members; I'd guess that now, fresh accounts that request a name change will most likely not get accepted due to the staff thinking they are alts, so only the people that have been in the community for long enough to be trustworthy have a shot at being approved which is only a tiny percentage out of all the users on the website. So this doesn't entirely solve the "issue" of OG names being more valuable now, and especially if the owners decide to submit even a single run (which there are plenty of categories that can be completed in literal milliseconds) then not even support hub will be able to help you. This just slightly increases the luck factor needed to pull a name out of support hub.
