New to speed running

I am new to the speed running community. I had a couple of questions about the general things to do with speed running.

Can you use a Gameboy player on a Gamecube to count as Gameboy? What do you do if the games you run have no split formats already? Can you make one? Is there anything against using second party controllers like repro NES or PS2 controllers? How about the NES Advantage for NES games? How do I get my streams on Speedrun frontpage? How do I get the split view bot to work?

Thank you guys! I wanna be part of the community as best I can! :D

  • Yes, the GBP is the most used way of capturing the GBA/GBC/GB as it has real GBA hardware in it.

  • Yes, you make your own. The 2 most important split times are when you start the timer, and when the timer stops. Everything in between is for you to decide. A level, an important pickup, every jump... You name it, it's possible. Do pick moments where you have a free moment to hit that split button.

  • Depends on the controller. If it gives you any benefit over using stock controllers (turbo/rapid-fire buttons, digital "analog stick") or whatever. Anything else generally is ok. For example, the shitty PS2 you don't actually want to use or the Hori 64 controller. (The Hori controller has a better analog stick and button placement from the stock 64 controller, but it doesn't give you -actual- benefits. However, these are general guidelines, Always check with the games community what their opinion is, since they decide what gets on the leaderboards or not.

  • NES advantage, knowing the tech from a while ago, it doesn't give you an actual advantage, so should be good.

  • To get your stream on there, you need to have your stream linked, which you have, and need to be on a leaderboard on this website, which you do not.

  • What is a split view bot?

Welcome!

Note on the GBP from someone in the Game Boy community.

It suffers from some poor graphical output, and has a known issue with input lag; but it's an issue with the software, and not the hardware.

So most people who use GBP instead of an SGB2 for hardware, install GBi as the software in place of the boot disk. This gives you improved image output, and reduced input lag.

@Riekelt The view bot I am talking about is the Race Viewer under stettings on livesplit haha. I was wondering about the NES Advantage because of its Turbo Functionality. Bonk, for instance, on NES compared to the TG16. On the TG16 toggling the attack button for turbo in air will make him fly, on NES with the standard controller there is no Turbo.

As for the streaming, you mean top 3 of a game or #1?

@Legs, I have to burn a disc for the Gamecube GBP to make it run better?

You don't need to burn a disk; there are a number of ways to get GBi installed and booted. From using other games (I know Melee has a way to do it) or using tools like the action replay.

It's not required for speedrunning with the game boy player, but if it's something you get seriously into it may be worth investing in. I don't care much for picture clarity; but I personally find the input lag to be too bothersome on the GBP for speedrunning, but not everyone is as bothered by it.
