Many of the runs on the any% leaderboard were using different timing methods, which I checked and retimed, but I decided to check the 100% rules as well and noticed an incosistency. The Any% timing says to start on file select, whereas the 100% rules say to start on first input. These should not be different.
What timing method should be the standard?
I think it should be on selecting the file, considering the intro is basically the same as Super Mario World, and not nearly as long as NSMB W intro.

Yeah, I'd pretty much agree with you. I asked Loz about it, and he seems to be on the same page too, so I'll probably get 100% changed to file select.
I would personally change it to first input, just to match the timing of NSMBW and other hacks (by the way, SMW is also timed from first frame of possible input, which just happens to be before the text box appears in the cutscene :P ). However if people feel file select would be more appropriate, I have no objections.
Personally I like having it started on file select but I can see how people would want first input because of how much more convenient it is. I also timed opening cut scene and it's about 35 seconds.
