Are you running the game and/or time on the laptop?

Well what I do at least is that I run the game in windowed mode and shrink it so I can fit both the timer and game comfortably on screen, or if you're using LiveSplit you can make the splits horizontal and cover the task bar with it to still have the game somewhat fullscreen

Do you have an HD TV and a spare HDMI cable? If so, you have a second monitor. Hook your comp (assuming it has an HDMI port, if it's running a game you speedrun it probably does) up to the TV's HDMI port.
