newest allchars run?

doesn't bother me that much because it's an impressive run and would still be faster than mine without whichever script is being ran to quick-restart runs and i'm not an active runner anymore. i don't know of any other speedrun which allows the use of arbitrary user-created scripts during the run without being called a TAS though, the use of console commands during a run is also a bit strange and i think if the rules remain arbitrary like this there could be confusion in the future since for example a script could be used to auto-select items from command, mash teleporter entrance, and maybe even automate loader moon travel. just my thoughts though

I have uploaded the reset script here now and updated the rules for all characters. I agree with you mostly, I think console is fine to use but forcing the use of a third party program isn't great. In the end we let it slide because no one runs the category and two people in the discord that do didn't have and problem with it. The console reset script is a fairly recent thing, I recommend joining the discord so you can atleast have knowledge of this stuff as soon as it becomes news.

All the script does is give a quick reset which is common in good rouge likes, maybe one day it will be implemented in vanilla but that would force you to newest patch. If the game allowed you to bind keys this wouldn't be an issue but sadly for whatever reason you can't in vanilla console. If using the script is banned then we'll just have to enter it manually which seems arbitrary and non-skill oriented, to ban the use of console would be pretty ridiculous imo.

yeah i would think that using an auto restart script is fine for categories like any% but using scripts in the middle of a run just feels wrong to me, especially if anyone can make whatever script they want and execute it during runs since that's literally a TAS, if you refer to the end of my post it could cause problems

i'm not sure what all can be done with the vanilla console but again, using it in the middle of a run could be problematic if there aren't any rules against it. there are commands like cheats and timescale and although they don't work at the moment later patches could fix them and have more console commands like giving items or w/e, i would think that those should obviously be banned

if you reset a run with a script which uses the console in any% then that part isn't being timed so it isn't part of the run so i don't see how anyone could have any problems with that, but all characters is different from any% since you have to do menuing in the middle of the run. menuing is a skill-based part of many different speedruns and it feels arbitrary to say that it's non-skill oriented in the context of this game and i personally haven't seen any speedruns which allow the use of user-created scripts for the purpose of speeding up menuing without being considered a TAS

Console use is common in many other speedruns: DOOM, any Valve game, etc. However usually in those games you are able to bind the command to a key so it does not rely on ahk. The use of cheat commands through console are banned universally (see src basic rules) unless otherwise specifically permitted which obviously they wouldn't be. I do not consider pressing escape and clicking a button to be a matter of "skill" and the script may actually level the playing field for people with slower machines as the menus may actually take longer to load and thus unfairly add more time.

The belief that someone could make a viable ahk script for other purposes is just conspiracy honestly and also nearly undetectable at any rate. To ban the use of console again seems ridiculous when we do things like edit game files, allow use of console in other categories, etc.

yes, i never said console should be banned, i only said that now if there's console use in the middle of runs there may have to be rules specifying which commands are allowed in case future patches allow for altering the gameplay itself through the console

the creation of ahk scripts for other purposes are far from conspiracy and i could prove it if you wanted by creating a script which auto-selects specific items from command menus. this could save time in categories such as any% at the end of teleporters but would be especially useful in all chars because of times where quickly stopping to pick up a speed item would save time in the long run. if we ban a script such as that, i would assume the line should be drawn at completely banning scripts during a run in order to avoid having to arbitrarily decide which scripts are allowed or not during a run

I realize now that its just as fast to use ctrl + v or the up and down arrows in console to reset than the script. The script isn't even necessary and i will refrain from using it in future runs but i will still be resetting through console.

i personally don't see why using the console during runs should be allowed, as i have always considered menuing to be a part of the all characters speedrun. making decisions such as choosing to reset for a better spawn which takes time and checking to see if it's a viable seed is a large part of the run and i think more people should weigh in on whether it's allowed or not. i'm personally against it but if i'm in the minority then it doesn't really matter since i don't have any authority on these things, but that's just my opinion.

Again if the game was just made to allow keybinds via console or was given a proper quick reset then we wouldn't be having this conversation. Also the can of worms was already opened by allowing console in any% (while it may not necessarily save time, console IS open for part of the run). I understand your concern but the menuing is not specifically difficult or strategically intuitive and is at the very least a nuisance and a completely avoidable one at that. Not to mention there is also still menuing that happens after every character.

the console is not used during an any% run, it being open for a part of it doesn't matter if nothing is done with it. my problem is that time is required to exit a run, select single player, choose a character, and start a new run. that time makes it so you have to decide whether to spend time checking if a seed is viable or not or just resetting right away, which for me was a large part of all character runs especially since the characters with less mobility have a smaller amount of viable seeds. quickly resetting the run via console completely overhauls it and i have no idea how much time it saves but i don't think a criteria for allowing it should be whether it is "a nuisance" or not especially with how much it defines the run

again this just seems like a pointless back and forth without other people weighing in with their opinions since we disagree with each other so i doubt this is accomplishing much

i only reset 10 times and each reset saves ~9 seconds or so, around 1:30s saved by using the script (the script isn't necessary anyway). There is nothing strategic about resetting, you are essentially flipping a coin to see whether or not you can continue your run.

i don't think you understand how much time it actually saves. if you aren't able to quick reset, there is a large potential timesave by checking out if a seed is viable or not by spending time checking newt altar location, which can turn into a large time loss if you get many unlucky seeds in a row. i remember when i did a couple all char runs it wasn't uncommon to get unlucky for even up to 5 minutes on characters without vertical mobility which completely killed runs when i was already more than 30 minutes into them. your argument about flipping a coin applies to any% as well, speedruns of this game are inherently luck-based and my argument here is that allowing console during the run fundamentally changes its nature

United States

i understand exactly how much time it saves. It takes around 2 sec to reset with console, and around 11 sec to reset without it. Ones strategy on whether or not they take a start is irrelevant, its not like i sat there and reset 50 times trying to get the perfect start, and if you do that i doubt you'll beat me.

Vanilla runs in Gauntlet

Seeing as most everyone was for this change, the Gauntlet category will now accept runs performed on an unmodded version of the game. Using the mods is still allowed, with the Fogbound Lagoon stage now being optional - allowed, but not required.

Vanilla runs still submit their IGT from the results
