Visual Novel Complaint Thread #9,001

What is it going to take for visual novel runs to be accepted on this site? Like is there anything at all I or anyone else can do to help make it happen?

Valhalla

Probably when they become games and not visual novels.

Disappointed in my fellow Ohioan

you can always try to submit your game. nowadays games get accepted way easier (i mean they fucking accepted multiple different chess games after elo took over) but yeah visual novels will have a hard time being accepted due to the runs mostly consisting of you holding the skip button to go through the (normally) hours long text and the actual gameplay is just really simple

I plan to still try and submit the game every time I run a VN, but they are currently still being stubborn about it. I'd imagine that it would take someone with a more open perspective on the genre becoming in charge in order for these to ever get accepted.

Alternately, a separate website specifically for VN speedruns could be made.

you can always just have leaderboards in google sheets too. annoying to update and hard to find but at least you can keep track of peoples times

If the VN would have elements that would make it a good speedgame, then I am sure with the right explanation it will be added.

"Good speedgame" is subjective. I'm of the opinion that standard VNs that are entirely choice-based and have no other gameplay elements constitute as "good speedgames", but the site owners do not, so no explanation is going to change that.

Finland

im genuinely curious to know how you think that those kinds of vns are "good speedgames"? i havent played all too many vns but the few i have played all had a skip button which you hold down and then at a speed you chose in the settings it would clear text so wouldnt that literally be all you do? alogn with holding your cursor where the next correct option will be and spam click to move on as fast as you can.

Everything you just said is why I think they are good speedgames, in addition to the fact that VNs are visually pleasing and usually have good music. Those things fit my personal definition of a good speedgame.

A good speedgame is when the speed at which you progress through the game is determined solely by mashing?

Or selecting responses when they appear, yeah. That's one of many attributes that I think could personally qualify for a good speedgame, hence why I'm here advocating for VN speedruns.

I’ve heard better responses from @derric_young

hmm yeah im not even sure if to call it speedrunning if you just hold the skip button and see as the game finishes it self. you cant really compare how fast someone was at holding a button than someone else

It literally, objectively, is speedrunning, though.

Technically you can “Speedrun” everything. And some things you shouldn’t Speedrun.

Speedrun.com wants to add games to the site that have optimization so you can keep on trying to get a better time. You can’t optimize pressing a skip button.

There are exceptions on the site that will never be added again. They are there because of two reasons.

  1. They were added when the rules were lest strict.
  2. Series moderators added them when they shouldn’t have been added.

Please stop debating weather or not this can be addd to the site.

All you're doing in VNs is just skipping text! There's no actual gameplay in them! They're basically just online books! it'd be pointless having something like that on SRC in my opinion! If they were VNs that had other elements like actual gameplay and not just skipping text, that'd be a different story!

I like how all of you are conveniantly ignoring the core gameplay element of visual novels, which is choice-making, and are instead reducing them to "just skipping text". Visual novels speedruns can also contain exploits such as glitches and cutscene skips like other speedruns.

Idk who you think you are telling me to stop debating this, but I'm going to keep advocating for VN speedruns until either the site starts including them, or until I stop caring about speedrunning.

French Southern Territories

It's not really choice making if you know the optimal choice ahead of time. VNs are not like Minecraft where you have to think on the fly. Just pick the option with less dialogue.

Also, this does not change the fact that you can just hold down a button to skip through text, making every single speedrun one long autoscroller with no actual gameplay.

If a VN has glitches/gameplay elements other than just being a virtual book, then there is a very good chance that site staff will accept the game as long as you give a description explaining that. That has already been pointed out to you earlier in this thread. Virtual novels are not explicitly banned in the game requests rules. They just usually get rejected for not having potential for optimization.

If you REALLY care about this, then set up your own site like you said you might, and/or speedrun any of the several VN games that have already been added to speedrun.com. This is not a big deal at all.
