What to say and not say in a chat?

if you are new... say "hi". You'll never get hate for just saying hi or hello.

What have you said before that made everyone hate you? Normally not even trolls get that kind of hate. Or are you exaggerating?

Mistakes in chat are never a big deal. Unless the mistake was clearly violating a rule the streamer has.

I guess the big thing to avoid is politics and insulting people.... usually those will get you hate from the rest of chat..

Some streamers have chat rules (usually in a panel on their twitch channel), so just follow those and you’ll be fine. Otherwise, a little common sense goes a long way in not annoying someone in chat.

Just follow the big, basic rules: don’t insult people, don’t advertise yourself or anyone else, don’t backseat game, and don’t be rude.

Just be friendly and respectful and you’ll be fine :3

Esperanto

"Backseat driving" is a colloquialism for people in your passenger seat telling you how to drive, when to break, slowdown, etc. while you are driving.

"Backseat gaming" is an extension. Don't say things like "you should do...," etc. In other words, don't tell people how to play as they're playing stuff.
What do you mean by "backseat game"?
Backseat Gaming = Telling the person playing how to play

like, if you sit in the back of a car and tell the person driving how to drive.

the only comment i have on the backseat gaming issue:

If the streamer asks for advice and you know how to help, go ahead and help in a respectful manner.

If the streamer doesn't ask, it's often construed as rude.

But for example, one of the streamers I like to watch will often designate a single person in chat who has a game guide open to help out when needed. But that's kinda rare.

tl;dr use common sense and it will take you far.

going into someone's chat and immediately criticizing their gameplay, the look of the stream, etc. is a great way to get the streamer to hate you

For me, if something is borderline, it's easier to think about how I'd feel if someone commented that to me during my game.

just add a kappa after each sentences and no one will be offended Kappa

On backseat gaming, make sure the streamer is specifically asking for help, and not just thinking out loud. Some examples of thinking out loud: "I wonder what this might do," "Now what could that mean," "now where should I go next." Usually when asking for help, a streamer will directly address chat, "can someone in chat tell me/help me..."

Other cases where you might feel an urge to comment (e.g. streamer just walked by a secret/obvious thing), and you don't know their preference for being told about the game, you can just ask what their stance is on chatting about spoilers. Usually that won't elicit any vitriol. The term "blind" has come to be used to indicate that it's the first time someone is playing a game, and doesn't want any level assistance/spoilers.

How is this such a difficult concept for people to understand?

If you wouldn't say something to someone's face IRL because you know it would be likely to piss them off, don't say it in a Twitch chat. The veil of anonymity isn't an excuse to be an asshole to people, and putting a kappa after a douche statement doesn't make it less douchey.

Just interact with people like a normal person, and if you don't know how to do that, then "How do I talk in chat" isn't the question you need to be asking yourself.

Those who try to do this in my chat, get an instaban. Been dealing with too many people who tried to pass it off as a joke by using kappa.

Valhalla

I just ignore it, and then I don't have to ban anyone. They get discouraged from doing it, and I don't have to drop everything to ban them.

I've actually restricted myself from saying certain things in everyone's chat. Just because I always forget everyone's rules. Here is my list of things not to say!

1: Politics. Let's face it, people go nuts over it and will fight with you all day long. Things get pretty heated. 2: Religion. You have the right to believe what you want, you should try to avoid the topic to prevent fights. You also shouldn't judge someone else's beliefs. If this topic happens to come up, go on and discuss it. Just be respectful of others. If you think someone's beliefs are stupid, just remember they probably think the same about yours. Shocking I know. 3: Sexual: Do I really need to explain this one? 4: Profanity: In most streams, mild profanity is alright. You have to remember kids are watching some of those streams though. So some streamers might be a little more strict than others. If the streamer has indicated their stream includes something graphic, the stream might be a bit more laid back about it. In which case the more cursing the better. :P 5: Just read the rules. Most streamer's rules are pretty simple to follow. Just be respectful honestly.

What do you mean by that? Are you talking about deleting chat messages?

If so not really, IIRC you cant delete your own chat messages, but in the event you make a mistake, just send another message correcting it followed by "typo LUL" or something :P

Antarctica

Yeah can’t delete your own messages unless you get banned/timed out. Then the messages get removed (although numerous browser extensions prevent that anyway)
I'm not using I-pads since I think they're ugly, would using a mobile phone be a greater alternative? I was planning on buying one in any case, but will Twitch work on that? Can I see the the chat on mobile phone?
Maybe. Yes. And yes!
