Changing hardware allowed?

So I heard you can replace the HDD of your PS2/PS3/PS4 system to a SSD.

But why is it allowed to do so? Isn't this rebuilding your console system? I could also force PAL60 but this seems banned.

Maybe a weird comparison, but I feel it's weird to allow changing hardware of your console from HDD to SSD when other stuff isn't allowed ^^" (yes you can upgrade your PC to SSD but I think PC isn't in the category console)

It's basically modifying console? Anyone knows why this is allowed in some games? Thanks!

It’s allowed for PS4 because it’s a native feature of the console. The console allows you to change out the HDD with an SSD easily. In other words, it’s supported by Sony.

PS2 and PS3 can’t do that without installing custom firmware on them because they don’t natively support that. In these cases it’s usually banned because it requires modifying the hardware to improve its performance which is almost always disallowed. I’d be surprised to find a game that allows this for PS2/PS3.

As a side note - PS2 has HDD support for some games naturally (FFX and the Japanese versions of KH1 for example) which drastically decreases load times. This hinges on you being able to find the correct hardware to make this work and it’s mostly JP only from what I know. But this would be/is allowed because it’s a native function supported by the console and you’re not hacking in any changes.

What? Replacing drives on PS3 is almost as easy as doing it on PS4. There's even a guide for it on the PlayStation website. There's tons of PS3 runners that use SSD.

There's no "custom firmware" you just have to download the current system software off the website onto a USB stick and install it from the stick to the new drive in the console.

Maybe I was thinking of something else, a runner I know had to install some custom stuff to change something on his PS3 and he said that part of it had to do with using an SSD.

Guess I had some bad information on that, thanks for clearing it up.

Well, for PS2, some games had an "Install to HDD" feature, in wich case you could use some (old) HDDs connected to the PS2 via the official Ethernet Adapter part. So for these games, i'd say it's ok since it's intended ?

For the games without it, you can use an HDD too, but it's not intended and you have to use OPL, it can result in faster loading times too...

If you plan on using that for runs though, i'd ask the mods of the games just in case.

I'm quite sure the last several WR holders of Demon's Souls all used SSD. Same for many PS3 Shadow of the Colossus runners

I am asking it because I am moderating a PS2 game, that's why I am asking if someone submits a run with a SSD ^^ And of course if I am running a PS2/PS3 or PS4 game, I want my time to be optimised. I was confused if this is allowed or only for particular games.

@Timmiluvs yes I saw this at KH and Final Fantasy games, I think I saw some other games with this variable.

But I see it's not clear ^^" So it depends on the moderators? The moderators decide if it's allowed or not?

Easy fix is not counting load times at all.

Yea but the usual run is around 3 hours long, it will take alot of time to exclude every load time (not impossible tho).

I know the Speedrun community do have some basic rules regarding verifying runs. So I was wondering if installing a SSD was banned or not.

Load removal for a console game is butts. There's a game I want to run on PC that asks for runners to manually remove loads when submitting runs. I'm still gonna run it but I may or may not submit the runs because that's butts too. Unless someone out there knows how to write an autosplitter that can manually remove the loads, heh.

Didn't say removing loads is fun, but puts everyone on the same level. I'm just speaking from the perspective of someone that wouldn't have to moderate a leaderboard like that ha.
