Looking for a News Editor!

We want to get a News article system set up, and we're looking for a volunteer to write some good quality articles. The candidate should ideally be:

• A native English speaker (other languages will be available at a later point) • Good at spelling, grammar and punctuation • Able to express themselves well • Interested in (and up-to-date with) various speedgames and events

It's basic, really. If you're interested, please give a link to any sample article you've written before. If you know anybody else who might be interested, please refer them here :)

would this be similar to the front-page posts SDA put up every couple years?

I used to write gaming theorycrafting articles for the League Of Legends fansite Reign Of Gaming

Here's the sample article: http://www.reignofgaming.net/blogs/a-different-view/thebirdofprey/20150-deathfire-grasp-vs-rabadons-deathcap

Been following the speedrunning community for several years and even attended and ran a game at SGDQ 2014, would love the opportunity to be more involved.

Thanks!

I'm definitely interested in giving this a go. I'm afraid I don't have any sample articles to show off, but I wrote a short analysis of a Halo 4 mechanic not too long ago. Hopefully there's enough there for you to see my writing style.

I've got a lot of free time on my hands currently, so devoting time to researching different runs and events is no issue. Thanks in advance for the consideration!

Hello, I would love for you guys to consider me for your editor. I've worked for a community newspaper for two years, won several awards and love speedruns. Here is a sample article. http://theebbtide.com/content/do-brings-doo-wop-scc%E2%80%99s-%E2%80%9Chairspray%E2%80%9D

Just my 2 cents towards the initial post, not towards anything said after that.

1: It might be ideal to have "open content submission" so to speak and one or two "content managers" who accept (and sometimes write) articles. I want neither of those jobs, so having someone in charge would probably be good. 2: Ideas for good topics may be covering marathons, notable new records, community spotlights, other speedrunning related gaming stuff like the Nintendo World Championships recently. There's certainly plenty of options. Articles like those on Shoryuken seem to be a fair baseline (though they almost have too many). We probably don't want Kotaku style articles; dramatic topics should be avoided in most cases.

I'll leave this mostly up to Pac, but those are my recommendations.

Hi Pac,

I was alerted of your opening and wanted to apply for the open position(s). For a writing sample, you can check out my blog here: https://wodgeball.wordpress.com/ I've been following speed runs of all kinds for a number of years, so I feel that I have sufficient background knowledge. While I am new to speedrun.com, I've been active on other websites such as SpeedRunsLive and I plan on being active here going forward.

If as kirkq proposed, article submissions were open to everyone (or a team of people), I'm pretty sure I'd enjoy contributing to that. However, I'll leave an editorial/content management role to someone more qualified :)

Hi Speedrun.com I would really like to be a News Reporter! I go on your website multiple times a day! I speedrun Super Mario World 11 exit. I can write down stuff like recent runs, world records, marathons, new games, and a lot more stuff!

I have a lot of free time so any time you need me I will be at your service:) I also watch AGDQ and SGDQ live so if I need to I can write about that!

But if you don't pick me that is alright At least you took the time to look over this:)

I must say, the Twitter account could be a bit more active :P

I have recently have started writing things about the currently going on Super Mario World tournament which can be seen on my site: http://patrickpowerproductions.com/ I started speedrunning February 2015 and have grown very much to it. I follow speedrunning events heavily like Games Done Quick and smaller events for certain games like the current Super Mario World No Star World Tournament.

An Article content submission with some people to check them over etc as per Kirkq's suggestion sounds like a good idea, considering it would take stress off individuals to write and more allow others to link and rewrite the major article release with those snip-its others wrote in order to bring community related content about the speed running community(ies) together. Be very interesting to have because I always loved reading the short updates that SDA always has every week or so. I do not write much myself for article type stuff but I always like finding ways to help out and even sharpen my writing skills with things I find interesting or with stuff I work on. Having a way for others to submit links and a short description on speed running related stuff will help push content like this faster when the editor(s) can just summarize and write it to be more simple and informative.

You can also maybe look at having people submit example articles about a few things for a criteria to look for editors to do this. Could be a better way to find the people you want to work with.

Anyways just my thoughts and suggestions. <3

Good to see so many volunteers! I'd volunteer as well but I'm lazy and unreliable =P

Just as an update, Pac is away at ESA this week.

Maybe MASH's suggestion is best for now, have a period where we review and post a few articles, then delegate it to someone who stands out. We'll see what Pac thinks when he's back.

Amazing how many people are willing to volunteer!

Pac, you said something about more languages coming later and I would gladly volunteer for a german version. Im a native german speaker and happen to be very good at english, too. Grammar is not a problem and I would really like to get some experience translating.

Good luck to everyone applying for the news section! :D

Wow, I'd loooooooooove to be a part of this, but sadly I'm not a native english speaker :/ I am a spanish native speaker though and I would love to participate as an editor when you make the spanish language available. Actually, I could start working now if you told me to hehe

Good luck, fellows C:

I would also love to volunteer my time to help out, although the closest I have to an example of writing is part of a guide for Pac-man World any% (link here - https://docs.google.com/document/d/18F8kNkQdIBqIL_WXvwUb01bwqPQ5PuArcS3QnE8z2pE/). Perhaps, because so many people want to help out and it is a volunteer thing, you could have several writers. That way, the group could proofread each other's articles, help each other out in writing/research (especially when writers block occurs), and one person doesn't feel like its entirely their responsibility. Regardless of what you guys do though, I think this is a great idea, and can't wait to read/write speedrunning articles

I volunteer as tribute!

Demo:

"In GTA3 news, SSJ4Vegeto holding the record for 265 days has finally been beaten by Chivu93 with a 1:10:28! Beating it by 4 seconds! In Vice City news, Mhmd_FVC was able to improve his previous record 57:22 with a time of 56:19 by a minute and 3 seconds! As we move on to the least recognized GTA games, Odyssic gets a 3:01:02 (2:56:00) time, improving his record by just under 5 minutes! Odyssic reaching closer and closer, to that Sub 3 time.

That does it for the month of April for #gta!"

So although I haven't written about speedrunning or videogames, I do currently write for a sports website ( http://www.footballnation.com/author/ben-luker/ ) and have a degree in Journalism, so I have experience producing content for websites.

I've been around the speedrunning community for over two years now, mostly in GTA streams and the marathons throughout the year. I feel I could bring informative but still entertaining articles to this site.

It would be great to be considered for the role!

Whatever happened to this anyways? I thought it would be a cool idea to have a news page set-up, and I still believe you guys should do it.
