Are any runners going to be attending AGDQ 2019 coming up?
My Mario Kart DS 32 Track submission was accepted into the marathon, so I'm trying to figure out what I'm going to do for my couch commentators, and seeing if any other runners are going is the sensible first step.
It would be cool to maybe do a race live at the event at some point too!
I'm not going... and I actually don't have any runs of this [was planning to start running it IF... you know, is emulation allowed for this game? is there an emulation category?... cause I'm not able to record my DS and all that.].
Either way, I wound up here because I scrolled through the AGDQ schedule and saw this, and was like "holy fucking shit, I love this game." This game is so awesome it's the only Mario kart to make it to EVO [I'm still mad the MKDS footage from EVO 2006 is one of the most elusive things to track down]...
Seriously I do not believe there are any Mario Karts that surpass MKDS in terms of it's level of competition and skill required. Can you actually dodge blue shells in any game after MKDS without the use of items? I'm most looking forward to seeing you play sky garden. I had so many fond memories playing Sky Garden Online and taking the short cut that a lot [at the time] believed was only possible with the use of a mushroom and taking it with a MTB instead.
If there an incentive for you decal? that would be an interesting incentive. Also... just throwing this out there, but Dry bomber > Egg 1. It's been a while since I talked to MKDS players [like probably 2008 was the last time I was in frequent contact and regularly playing it]. One thing I remember were the ongoing debates over Egg 1 vs Dry Bomber.
While I know on paper it's actually still very hard to say which is best [other than flat out saying I think no competent TAS would use anything other than Dry bomber... Well, maybe it might use Egg 1 occasionally]. I personally think a TAS would use Dry Bomber. Cause in order, the things that matter are Acceleration, Handling, Drift [or lack there of], Weight [the more the better... okay I'm actually not sure about that. What does weight effect other than making karts less likely to knock you around and spin you out?], Speed, and items [Only worth considering for time trials really].
So, theoretically the better handling and acceleration of Dry Bomber allows it to stay in MTB speed longer than Egg 1 while having a better turning radius [from the handling]... and potentially this longer MTB makes it so you can stay in MTB speed all the time making the Egg 1's superior speed irrelevant. And the Egg 1's only real plus is it's lower drift making it more more likely to snake in a straight line... I need to test this shit in a TAS...
Anyway. Congrats though. Sorry about the rambling, but I'm excited. I love this game. I'll definitly be watching your run.
@JustinBailey it might've been a long time since you've played the game... DB vs Egg isn't really a thing anymore, to my knowledge all world records use egg, polt or bls, apart from a couple tracks which use LGS. Dry bomber is slow and despite being easy to PRB with, pros can just as easily do it with egg.
Edit: nevermind dry bomber is used on a few tracks where its handling is important. There's not much reason to use it in a fullgame run though.
@JustinBailey I’m not sure if you were talking about Wi-Fi or TTs, but for TTs Egg 1 is almost always better than Dry Bomber. Speed is the most important stat, even without keeping boost all the time the BLS (kart with top speed) is the best TTs kart by far, higher speed is just better when you’re good enough to handle the more awkward handling and shorter MTs. For Wi-Fi some people still use Dry Bomber, and it does have a lot more advantages compared to in TTs but Egg 1 is still widely considered superior if you’re good enough to handle it.
