Can we not hate on Elo?
waste of your time which could have been spent benefiting humanity
i completely agree with the whole stop bullying elo over literally everything but this is the worst argument you can make

like why did you make this forum post when you could benefit humanity by helping starving african children!!!!!!11!!1!! its such a dumb thing to say

anyways, i would state my opinion more clearly but i'd rather just copy paste someone else's message that explains my view more clearly than I could state it
a bit off-topic: Often it seems people in the forums just want to see the worst in how ELO handles things. Positive stuff also happened since the takeover. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying everything is awesome... The reality is somewhere in between. There are people behind that and they are doing their job.
Buys the site, promises to do good and just talks for ages about how much community matters Adds ads to the site Completely ignored the entire community they praised for so long Locks Pac's goodbye thread Only starts communicating after months of complaining by the community Outside of LewisAndSpark + Camcorder, the only communication we get is from an anonymous staff account that wont reveal their identity on a community driven site

Yeah we shouldnt bully them over every single message they send, but there is plenty reason to not be happy with them. From my perspective they acquired the site out of commercial interest and not because they have any care for speedrunning. Most of the staff dont even speedrun. Atleast Pac was a member of one of the oldest speedrunning communities out there lol

I remember a Elo staff said that, "I know the (speedrun.com) team is working really hard and is so keen to do their best for the community."

Maybe we can give some time to Elo to fit themselves more in speedrun.com? While we know there are many updates done by Elo does not fit the speedrun community, maybe now what we can do now is... looking forward to more updates from Elo to speedrun.com, I guess? but after all, what I can see Elo's update to speedrun.com is partly positive but mostly gives negative impact towards speedrun community. Hopefully Elo is really working hard to listen to the community's opinion.

Just because they acquired the site to make money doesn't mean they have done nothing good.

Personally I like the new layout/font on the profile and front page, just don't like having the news there. I'm super excited for the mod tools, and before they started working on changes, the site was running way faster than it used to when Pac was the owner. And even though most staff don't speedrun, @starsmiley, @Meta, and @lewisandspark all are active speedrunners and I trust them. And even though there was no communication for a while, they are listening to feedback. They read the forums now and several of the mod tools that will be in the upcoming update have been heavily requested for years.

“>Outside of LewisAndSpark + Camcorder, the only communication we get is from an anonymous staff account that wont reveal their identity on a community driven site” (sorry the quoting command is complicated). The only other unanonymous site staff who responds to posts is starsmiley. But seriously, following a user is such a simple feature, it could probably easily be added. That was not asking for anything complicated.

Actually Elo may focus on working other new features? I guess they are working on moderation tool. So they may not have time to make some small feature :/ Also coding is not that easy.

I'm not even that concerned about following a user.

The site being slow is actually actively affecting my motivation for speedrunning. Not by much, but still.

I'm not even that miffed by the whole situation, I'm just here to make posts that don't contribute to the conversation at all- an act I sometimes fail by making relevant posts, like this one.

If you're still reading this, I just want to say that Jon was hospitalized 28 times as a child. Children's National Hospital helped Jon restore his health and achieve his dreams of being an engineer and having a family. Let's create more bright futures.
Maybe we can give some time to Elo to fit themselves more in speedrun.com?
It has been almost a year since they purchased the site (13/10/2020)
Personally I like the new layout/font on the profile and front page, just don't like having the news there. I'm super excited for the mod tools, and before they started working on changes, the site was running way faster than it used to when Pac was the owner.
I'll start off by saying that the performance improvements at the start were huge and I'm super appreciative of them. At the same time though, when buying the site they had a massive stickied thread with site feedback, bugs, and a google form for feedback. In those threads and forms there were some changes that were very frequently requested, such as IL and API updates. Instead the first months from the users perspective had nothing new besides pronouns, a new layout that was extremely controversial and incomplete, and ads. Maybe the only thing there that was actually requested was pronouns and to a speedrunning website they might as well be one of the least important features (also why not just have a status box?)

Also yes the mod tools sound awesome, but they got announced the moment the forums were getting super salty (from what I remember) and now they seem to be working on other things such as performance updates and undocumented API changes. The pedantic part of me feels like while they are coming, they were announced far too early to try to save face.
The only other unanonymous site staff who responds to posts is starsmiley.
When I talk about staff I'm not counting Meta and Star as they were both volunteer staff under Pac. When I say "staff" I am referring to employees of ELO that are unrelated to the site.
But seriously, following a user is such a simple feature, it could probably easily be added. That was not asking for anything complicated.
I hard disagree. I have heard horror stories of the sites codebase and as someone that has been coding since they were 9 I can assure you that everything sounds 100x easier than it really is. Not to mention there is the difficulty curve of getting used to this new codebase that wasn't written by you.

The mod tools were talked about in detail on the same news post that they started rolling out ads and replacing the stickied forums with the support hub, and there's not been an official site update since (unless you count news related to that banner I wish would go away).

I agree some people are too hard on elo, but at the same time, the ire is 100% earned.

tl;dr src isn't community lead or community driven anymore. That's plenty of cause for concern. Bugs and ads aside.

Also, since when is lewisandspark speedrunning? I actually never seen any run of her in any form. Would love to see what runs she did.

The thing is, they did a few nice things. But the majority of time they screwed up and they lost the trust of the community. Regaining that will be hard for them and in the meantime, people will continue to be negative towards them unless they prove themself otherwise. Hell, the current situation now even made some people work on a src alternative.

Ok so here is my take on this whole situation.

The reason why I don't like ELO in their current state is because they claim to be welcome to receiving feedback about the website, but whenever they receive feedback, they either don't respond to it (be it a thread on the forums or a suggestion on the Support Hub), or in the rare cases that they do, they make 1 post about it, and then they never make an update on the situation again. I understand that some suggestions that they receive require a lot of time and effort to implement, which is exactly why I think an update from time to time would be great because at least we know whether or not they're actually doing it.

I completely understand that they have to worry about many other things, but if you know that you have other priorities and you know you aren't able to do the things you're suggested by the community, then why not just let the community know that you aren't able to do so? Even on small fixes to the website or bug reports regarding certain features, even when they claim that they are going to fix them soon and it shouldn't take long, it either takes long or it simply doesn't happen (see this thread for reference).
As far as we're aware though, both of them are paid employees under ELO now. They got rid of the volunteer program a couple months ago so the only logical conclusion to draw now is they're both being paid to work on the site currently, unlike before where it was voluntary.
They are paid employees now, but I view them in my mind seperately from the people that were already with ELO before purchasing the site.

Also on another note, I really dislike the idea of the @SpeedrunCom account. I think people tend to oversell the importance of community and blah blah but like seriously I would very much prefer talking to someone I can actually attach a real name to than some generic staff account, it gives me similar feelings to receiving one of those "noreply" emails.

Okay then let me bring you back to my previous question. Since they have so many users (which they do) that are demanding updates and are suggesting things and are giving feedback, if they know that they can't get around to doing them since they are so busy, then why do they keep saying things such as "you shouldn't be waiting too long" when they reply to those suggestions? https://gyazo.com/04cd087125122364cbd2f862e18387ba.png https://gyazo.com/1a6898b8320262e38ac1909e805122f6.png

No one expects them to do stuff fast considering the site has such a big new influx of players, but it is infuriating to me when a mod responds to those bug reports and they claim to "fix it shortly" when in reality it takes weeks for them to do, sometimes even months. (None of these situations where Cam replied have been resolved yet). When you claim to do something relatively quickly, people start having expectations from you.

Also I stated in that thread that I didn't expect them to implement the feature of following users in just 2 weeks, what I really meant was that the thread became forgotten about until I bumped it which made me think that the idea that 2snek suggested was probably dead already because that's what happens with most other ideas; someone suggests something, then a few users reply, if they are lucky a mod will reply saying that they've taken the feedback into consideration, and then the thread dies along with the idea with no further notice from the staff.

I had no idea a reasonable discussion between multiple active users of the site regarding ELO was, in fact, a meme thread.

This is good news, as it means I am still meeting my daily meme quota without even trying.

None of us really give estimates or responses because (at least speaking for me and Meta) we don't know. I know literally nothing about programming and so I can't actually respond to feedback giving accurate estimates on when we can do it or if we can do it at all. Not speaking for other ELO staff, but it wouldn't surprise me if they were the same.

We don't respond? You guys think we're ignoring you. We do respond? We're building up expectations that won't get met.

The truth is we simply cannot give a 100% accurate and confident answer because a lot of us don't know anything about programming and the capabilities of the site.

And generally a lot of the things you guys are asking for are extremely minor. Would following a person on the site be really cool? Absolutely. But wouldn't you rather the site be more functional and available for users and game moderators before we do cosmetic stuff that would be cool but is overall useless in actually keeping a database for speedruns?

Again, I don't know a lot of the behind the scenes stuff, but from just talking to the other staff, ELO is trying very hard to make the site as functional and convenient as possible as fast as they can, and expecting everything to be solved in a few week span isn't very reasonable.
