NSC: How precise are the Pikachu crit inputs / what cues do you use?

Hey all,

After a while of struggling with the RNG manip in this route, I've finally got it all down except for the Pikachu crit. I get it maybe 20% of the time, but I can't tell why that 20% of the time works when the rest of the time it fails. The inputs all feel the same to me every time.

How precise do you have to be with the inputs? Frame-perfect? Are there visual/audio cues you use to get it consistently?

This is roughly what I do now:

  • Wait until around when the first 'p' in "appeared" displays, then slide across A+B
  • Wait until the first frame when Spearow's sprite is fully on screen, start holding A
  • Let go of A and hit Select the first frame the moves appear on-screen
  • Switch back to holding A immediately after

Thanks!

After struggling with this for a few hours I can actually answer my own question. The problem was I was using the “AAA” Spearow route instead of the “AA” one. The extra frames to write out “AAA” at the start of the Pikachu battle were eating into the window of frames I had to do the crit inputs and making it incredibly difficult. I switched over to the “AA” manip and without really changing my inputs for the Pikachu fight I can get it way more reliably (maybe 80% of the time). So if you’re using the other route and struggling with the crit, consider switching!
