New Ruleset?

Hey, I'm new to speedrunning but I love playing this game and so a friend and I decided that we wanted to try running this game.

When we were looking at the rules provided, we noticed that it says that collecting all medals is a requirement for the 100% category. This should probably be changed in some way or another because 3 of the medals in the game are beating it once, twice, and 3 times on newgame+ and newgame++, which would unnecessarily extend the run length since almost all of the other medals can be obtained on the first playthrough.

That being said, there are a couple other medals as well that would add a ton of extra length to the run, such as the damage ones. I was thinking that we should change the ruleset for the 100% run to either exclude certain medals or just exclude the whole "collect all medals" part altogether.

Oh, apparently I'm a moderator for this game. Interesting.

As for just giving players a free pass on 2 of the medals because they're too tedious, I can't see any good justification for doing that. If you (understandably) don't want to do what it takes to meet all the game's achievements in a speed run, that's basically you saying you'd rather play a different category (might I suggest Any%?).

A much bigger problem, though, is that on the Steam version (which seems like the most "official" version to choose), it seems to be quite difficult to wipe your medal progress. Without the game keeping track of which medals you have and haven't obtained in the CURRENT run, I'm not sure that a legit 100% run is plausible.

Thanks for the response!

It does seem very tedious to play the game through 3 times in the 100% run, and the medal collection issue you mentioned is also a potential problem. Would it be possible to get a subcategory for "all chests" where simply all of the chests, including the ones on Battle Mountain in the Steam version, have to be opened? It would make only a single playthrough necessary while maintaining a lot of the completionist elements that players could enjoy. Additionally, the progress on this can be easily tracked since there is a tool in-game that tells you how many chests you have opened. This also makes it so that medal collecting is no longer an issue.

So its been a while since ive been on the forums, and i found this just now... sorry for the delay.

You see, I believed at the time 100% always means "Get everything possible no matter how long it takes," which is certainly not an optimal thing to think when it comes to speedrunning, therefore i am removing the fact that you have to get any medals at all in 100% as i agree playing the game 3 times over is kinda ridiculous. As for the suggestion of "All Chests" I think it isnt a bad idea, though this category probably wont end with beating the final boss, but instead opening the last chest. I'll sort it all out as quick as I can, thanks for your patience.

On a somewhat related note, I do see one potential problem with the New Game++ "Unrestricted" category. Since there aren't any restrictions, what's stopping someone from spending many hours/days simply grinding everyone up to Lv. 99 (or whatever the limit is) and pumping everyone full of stat boosts until they one-shot everything they look at? If I could make a suggestion, maybe impose a level limit on the category (<50?) and a limit on buyable stat boosts (when they cost less than or equal to 2.094m?) This is just to make sure that runners don't have to spend eons grinding the party to have a chance at beating the top run, and it would make the run more interesting, I think.

I haven't looked at these threads in forever, and if I had seen this sooner I might've implemented it, but I think that's already been done with that 7 minute time, so I don't know if there's much I can do about it. Sorry.
