Playstation 2 Audio Capture Issue

Update: It seems the Elgato HD60S simply does not support 480i. To resolve this you either need a different capture card that does support 480i, or you need some kind of upscaler.

This is a bit of a weird one. The capture card I have is an Elgato HD60S. To be able to capture my Playstation 2 with it, I'm outputting with Component (YPbPr) into a Component to HDMI converter, and then that into the capture card. Problem with this approach is that audio gets kinda screwed, as shown here (I don't know if that happens through the capture card's output as well or if it's only happening on the feed, and I have no way to check that at the moment):

Up until now, the PS2 games I've wanted to record have supported Progressive Scan. When I turn that on, the audio issue goes away. However, I now want to record a game that doesn't have this feature. I've been messing with any setting that I thought could be affecting things, but no luck so far.

Now, I'm well aware that I can (probably) fix this by buying a Composite to HDMI converter and using composite output instead (or just cut the middle man and get a Composite capture card), but I'd like to avoid buying new hardware if possible. I'm curious if anyone's run into a similar problem in the past and found a way around it that didn't involve buying new equipment.

what converter are you using? i have a very similar setup and have not experienced any kinds of audio issues,

Do you have the issue outputting component for any other consoles? Is it every 480i PS2 game that sees that audio issue? I can’t speak for the quality of that converter, but I use a Retrotink-2x to go from component to HDMI on 480i PS2 games without issue.

If you only see that in 480i mode on the PS2, then my gut would tell me that that converter seems to struggle with that signal (although why audio matters at all between 480i and 480p is weird to me since they only differed in the video component).

EDIT: I just notice that the converter claims to support 480i no problem, so that last paragraph is moot. And I’m stumped as to what the issue could be.

Yeah it happens with every game in 480i. Haven't tried any other systems but I can try my Xbox 360 with it when I get home.

I’d be curious if the XBox sees it too. Not that I’ll really have an “oh I know the issue” of it does, but it’ll at least provide some clarity on whether it’s a PS2 problem or a 480i over component problem.

The only other idea I might have is with the PS2 component cables themselves. I find that surprising to be the issue since they seem to work fine most times, but what brand are you using?

@ShikenNuggets I have the same component to hdmi converter and i dont have (or notice) any audio issues on either the Xbox, PS2 or PSP (i dont use official cables, i couldnt tell you specifics), could be bad cables?

Okay, so... with the Xbox 360, the component cable works perfectly fine under normal circumstances, even at an interlaced resolution (the only option it gave me for that was 1080i). However, I was able to recreate the issue if I switch the cable from "HDTV mode" to "TV mode" (which actually shouldn't be sending anything through the component part of the cable but whatever).

This is the cable I bought for the PS2: https://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B073VFCC26

Something I did notice is that in both cases where I was getting the audio issue, Elgato Game Capture claimed the signal it was receiving was 480p, even though it should be 480i. I'm now thinking it would be really valuable to test the capture card's output, I'll see if I can make that happen somehow.

I found this thread because I'm having the same issue.

I'm recording from my Wii using a Wii2HDMI device and an Elgato HD60S. Did you ever find a workaround for the audio issue?

Canada

I did not unfortunately. All I found was that the HD60s does not officially support 480i (and it doesn't look like any Elgato cards do anymore). As far as I know the only way to fix this is to get an older/different capture card that does support it, or add an upscaler into the mix.
