You need to ask this question in the forum for the game in question. The mods/community of the game will be able to help you better than we will (although my gut and logic say that you're still running on console regardless of what controller you use).

Idk what thing is, but it sounds like one of those crazy consoles that plays NES/SNES/Genesis games all in one. If that’s the case, those types of consoles (like the ones by Hyperkin for example) are almost universally banned for their very poor emulation of games. They also tend to have very bad input lag for what it’s worth.

But, anything like that is controlled by individual games and their communities so you will need to check with the mods of any game in question on how they feel about those consoles and their legality for the LBs.

I believe that is a known issue, and I believe the current workaround is to zip the files first, then upload them.

TASing is still speedrunning, it’s just another form of it. So the question still makes sense, it’s just better suited for TAS Videos as mentioned above.

OBS can record your screen just like Fraps can, I would use that. I would always recommend OBS, it's the defacto standard in recording/broadcasting.

AntarcticaTimmiluvs4 years ago

If you’re using LiveSplitOne, you probably need to capture it with a window region in order to get it into OBS due to the fact that it’s a browser source. Alternatively, I think there’s a way to add the full webpage into OBS (screen capture maybe?) and then you can crop it down to just the timer.

Disclaimer: I’ve never used LiveSplitOne myself nor do I frequently capture browser sources, so anyone can correct me if needed.

TLDR but yeah, this literally sounds like pause buffering, you just called it something else lol. Games like OOT have been doing this for years to buffer inputs so achieve what is normally a frame perfect action. But of course this really only works if the game has some form of un-pause lag that allows you to buffer inputs, otherwise you're just pausing with no benefit.

It depends on the length of the run. For a run that’s under 20 hours, probably not too crazy to ask for a full video no (or at least a video that doesn’t have any huge gaps since streams can drop and local recording a run that large takes a lot of space). If the run is over that, it’s not unreasonable to allow multiple videos due to upload limits on sites. But again, as long as there isn’t any gaps, then it’s usually fine.

Please note this is dependent on each game and community, everyone might have different rules and regulations they look for with runs.

It should be noted that in most cases if a game is asking for that, they usually have some form of autosplitter that removes loads for you. Using that is how you get the loadless time - no game should be requiring you to manually remove loads.

Enable Global Hotkeys in your settings so all key presses will register when LiveSplit isn’t in focus.

My best guess there is that it sounds like some resources on your PC are getting maxed out and that’s what causing the capture to look like that at high quality. Do you know if your CPU or anything like that is getting maxed out?

If your PC’s resources are getting maxed out, it’s going to be hard to record on high quality reliably no matter what you do (having a decent PC is kinda required for high quality video recordings). That’s probably why you see what looks like motion blur or get lag spikes on amarec. I bet if you recorded or had the video output resolution set to something like 480p then you would probably not see those same issues (if it did then idk what it could be aside from a weird cap card compatibility or something).

For what it’s worth I once played around with a program called vMix to record the video of a run and piped that into OBS but in all honesty, it never worked great. It would occasionally crash for me and the quality was better and more reliable if I just went straight into OBS with the video source.

AntarcticaTimmiluvs4 years ago

There's a lot here that I don't understand, so let's start at the basic - the best replacement for Amarec is just capturing straight into OBS (Amarec really is obsolete nowadays). You say that capturing straight into OBS "looks really bad", can you elaborate on that? I can't imagine why capturing straight into OBS would degrade your capture so much while Amarec would keep it looking great.

I mean, LiveSplit and a foot pedal have nothing to do with one another. LiveSplit is a program that runs on your PC and responds to inputs from your keyboard (ie. pressing space bar to split). That being said, since you’re on a Chromebook, I don’t believe you can use LiveSplit. You can use the browser based version of it called LiveSplitOne, and it behaves the same way.

As for how to split, you really just need to press a key. All a foot pedal does is you bind the foot pedal to your split key, so pressing the pedal is the same as pressing the key. I would argue most foot pedals are unnecessary unless you want more precise splits (it takes time to move your hand off a controller to your keyboard) or unless you don’t want to take your hand off the controller. I also wouldn’t even recommend investing in a foot pedal, I would just find a crappy, old keyboard, rip most of the keys off, and then use your foot to press whatever your split key is. It’s cheaper than finding a foot pedal for the most part.

As long as you’re not creating any bindings that aren’t possible on a real controller (like pressing both left and right on a dpad by binding those two buttons to L/R triggers) then yes it will be fine. You just can’t exploit anything a real controller can’t do.

@RAIDONKU that is not a site bug, that is an issue with the rules for an individual game. Issues like that need to be discussed with the current moderators of the game.

AntarcticaTimmiluvs4 years ago

Why do you need to record your keyboard? There’s no rule that states you need to show your hands during the run, you just need video of the gameplay, not of yourself. And you can always look into a USB adapter or something like that to use any controller on your computer rather than keyboard (it’s just generally not allowed to use map buttons in a way that gives you functionality a real controller for the console can’t do).

You should post both of those questions in the Pokemon Diamond forum as they’ll get answered better there.

Though I can offer a little assumption into the emulator rule as I’ve dealt with DS games before, and it most cases that rule is because that version of deSmuME is the one that is closest to an actual DS in terms of performance.

Why are you directing someone in the Zelda 1 forum to the OOT discord? OOT has nothing to do with this game, this game has its own discord pinned on the side of the LBs here.

EDIT: the user who I was responding to with this deleted their post.

Most of the NES/SNES games available on the Switch have it listed as a platform, and the mods can add it if it’s not there. So, yes, it’s a valid platform. I wouldn’t recommend it however as it will run slower than an actual console or an actual emulator, so if possible I would recommend one of those if you plan on taking a game very seriously.

Just want to point out that last I saw (which was years ago now) gv-usb2 only had Windows drivers, so I’m not sure if it would work with Chrome OS or any Linux OS for that matter.
