Pokémon Yellow Forum  /  Differences between hardware and emulators

Mods delete this if you feel it isn’t suited for this board. I’m posting this here since I figured the Pokemon community is well established and has probably looked into this extremely well by now.

I speedrun a few games with a different community. I use the game boy player to run on and they use Bizhawk emulators (Gambatte core). One thing that I noticed was that the RNG seen between the versions is night and day, where the emulator group can get consistent runs through the game. My first assumption was the emulator we wrong since I was using real hardware but then I started to look into it and I figured that may not be the case. I stumbled across this post:

https://www.reddit.com/r/speedrun/comments/3uz683/comparison_of_super_game_boy_1_super_game_boy_2/

It seems that there’s a difference between the refresh rate on the Gamecube and the Game Boy Player which could lead to inaccuracies in the timing, which I’m assuming can play a difference in the calculations in the RNG values. That’s when I learned about the GBI (Game Boy Interface).

So my question boils down to which is the best platform to run on to get the most accurate experience? I have a Super game Boy 2 and from what I seen that may be my best bet but I really like having the GBA as my controller on the Gamecube. Does setting up the GBI alleviate the issues with the timing/RNG? I see you allow runs for both on the board, so I’m assuming the difference between then probably isn’t that great. Am I just going crazy and the difference between them is pretty much them just getting lucky? Any help/insight would be appreciated, thanks!

EDIT: Also as a clarification to why I'm here on a Pokemon board is my friend runs FireRed and I've worked with the various tools that calculate the seed that you'll get based on your starting ID (get a good starting Squirtle), so I figured this community knows pretty much everything about RNG across all the different types of platforms.

Gen 1 has been lucky to be blessed by some very talented programmers who helped make the Gambatte emulator accurate for gen 1 (no different than playing the yellow cart on a gameboy). It is the only emulator allowed for use. Super game boy is banned because it does not accurately emulate the real game. For yellow either gambatte or GBP or GBI are allowed and are all accurate and can all preform the manipulations. You can also potato cam your gameboy 😛
