Basically, what do I need software-wise to allow me to submit a run that won't get rejected (due to noticing most emulators aren't allowed).
Also, does it have to be done on Twitch? What's the best/easiest way to get started?

The allowed emulator is available under the Resources tab here on speedrun.com! You'll also need a working ROM (which we cannot provide) and a recording software such as OBS to record gameplay. Note that you are not necessarily required to stream your runs on twitch as long as they are recorded according to the rules listed for each category.

I'd also recommend joining the Discord linked here, as there are many more people who are available and answering questions there.

But it won't work on my phone, so stupid question maybe but are most of these runs at least being done on a laptop/pc?

Ah yeah, there's no mobile version of gambatte, unfortunately. You'd have to do your runs on a laptop or pc.

Managed to sort out the correct emulator and bios image thing to get it up and running, so just doing some more research now before my controller arrives for my laptop where I can practice those manips thanks for your help, Viroda!
