STUFF TO KNOW

  • Running near spinners and rotators causes them to face certain directions. If you try to run past a spinner or rotator, s/he will always catch you.
  • Opening the bag or Pokemon menu freezes spinners for 31 frames, or until you run near them. This is called bag manip. Walking speed is 16 frames per tile, and biking speed is 16/8/4 for tile 1/2/3+ of acceleration. Turning from a stationary position is 8 frames.
  • The cursors for the main menu and inventory never never reset unless you save+quit (so no point in swapping items to the top of your inventory).
  • You cannot buffer inputs in Gen 3, so it is generally best to menu immediately after an event, rather than in the middle of movement.
  • When Mudkip/Marshtomp/Swampert's HP is at 1/3 or less, its Torrent ability will trigger, which boosts the power of Water-type moves by 50%.

RNG MANIPULATION NOTES

  • If you want to use RNG manipulation for Mudkip stats, use this tool: http://forums.pokemonspeedruns.com/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=499

Recommended IV constraints: HP 0/0/0, ATK x/23/10, DEF 0/0/0, SPA 31/13/0, SPD 0/0/0, SPE 24/10/0 Recommended natures: all except Bold/Timid/Modest/Calm/Impish/Careful Recommended frame window: 8060 to 8370 (requires good mashing; adjust back as necessary) Check your trainer ID as soon as you gain control of your character, then type it into the program. Start the timer when you press A to select your name. The frame-to-time conversion in the program is inaccurate. Subtract about 0.97 seconds from the listed time. The time in the program minus 0.97 seconds indicates when you should press A to confirm your selection of Mudkip in Prof. Birch's bag.

  • RNG manipulation is not consistent like it is in Gens 4-5. This is because various random events cause the RNG to advance at different speeds throughout the game. If aiming for a specific frame, you shouldn't expect a success rate of more than 10%. If aiming for a cluster, you'll have a higher success rate but slightly worse Mudkips on average.

Before starting:

  • Have a save file with the text speed as FAST, battle scene as OFF and battle style as SET

NEW GAME

  • Choose the girl
  • Give yourself any 1-character name

LITTLEROOT TOWN

  • Withdraw the Potion from the PC, then set the clock to the default time
  • After the TV cutscene, walk left to Brendan's house. Walk upstairs, then immediately downstairs, then out
  • Walk up to Route 101

ROUTE 101

  • Choose Mudkip after looking in the bag
  • Check Mudkip's nature and stats

If NOT using RNG manipulation: - Note your trainer ID - Use this program to check your IVs: http://forums.pokemonspeedruns.com/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=499 - Reset any -Attack nature - Reset any -Sp. Attack nature if the IV is 0-21 - Reset any -Speed nature if the IV is 0-20 - Reset any Attack IV of 0-17 (unless +Attack nature) - Reset any Speed IV of 0-2 (unless +Speed nature) - Otherwise, the Mudkip is probably runnable, although you should reset if all of its stats are barely runnable (for example, neutral nature with IVs of 10/20/10/0/10/3)

  • Zigzagoon: Tackle spam

LITTLEROOT TOWN

  • Give Mudkip a 1-character name
  • Head north to Route 103

ROUTE 103

  • Rival 1: Tackle spam (use Potion if a non-crit Pound will kill)
  • If your Attack is less than x/27/10, use a Potion after the fight if you have <10 HP. Otherwise, use a Potion if you have <7 HP.
  • Walk back to Littleroot Town

LITTLEROOT TOWN

  • After exiting the lab, walk to the right so that you're two tiles to the left of your mom, then talk to her from the left
  • If you used your Potion and your Attack is less than <x/27/10, walk inside and talk to your mom to heal if you have <10 HP. If you used your Potion and have higher Attack, do this with <7 HP.
  • Run up to Oldale Town, then left to Route 102

ROUTE 102

  • Talk to the first trainer you see
  • Youngster Calvin: Tackle x3 + Mud-Slap, healing as necessary
  • Run through the grass to dodge the remaining trainers

PETALBURG CITY

  • Buy 2 Potions, 3 Repels, 2 X Speeds and 2 X Attacks
  • Run into the Pokemon Center (don't use it)
  • Run to the gym, and mash through/watch the long cutscene
  • When the cutscene ends, run west to Route 104

ROUTE 104

  • Run through the beach (not the grass)
  • Get the 2 Oran Berries
  • Run to one tile below the path, and stop one tile before the grass. Use a Repel, heal to 19+ HP, and equip an Oran Berry
  • Run through the grass, behind the Rich Boy, to enter Petalburg Woods

PETALBURG WOODS

  • Run left, and stop running at the tile to the bottom-right of the Bug Catcher, then walk past him. This is a guaranteed pass if you do it correctly
  • Aqua Grunt: Tackle spam, healing as necessary
  • Run left again, then pass the first Bug Catcher the same way as the first one

ROUTE 104

  • Get the 2 Oran Berries on the left
  • Run to the tile below the water. Wait for the rotator to look away, then walk past him and up the bridge
  • Get the 2 Leppa Berries in the northeast corner
  • Run straight to the Rustboro Gym

RUSTBORO GYM

  • Heal so you can survive 3 Tackles from Geodude (assume average rolls; see chart below)
  • Talk to the first Youngster (Mud-Slap x6)
  • Talk to the second Youngster (Water Gun x2)
  • If you have <a/20/13 Speed, heal to full before Roxanne. Otherwise, heal to full AND equip an Oran Berry.
  • Roxanne: WG spam

Roxanne's Nosepass has an Oran Berry, and she uses a Potion (up to 2) whenever it's below ~50% HP Nosepass will only use Rock Tomb if you have 18+ Speed OR it can kill you

  • Geodude chart > 7-9 dmg ... 0-12 IV -Def > 6-8 dmg ... 13-31 IV -Def, 0-12 IV neutral > 5-7 dmg ... 13-31 IV neutral, 0-24 IV +Def > 5-6 dmg ... 25+ IV +Def
  • Roxanne chart (Tackle) > 8-10 dmg ... 0-6 IV -Def > 7-9 dmg ... 7-31 IV -Def, 0-14 IV neutral, 0-6 IV +Def > 6-8 dmg ... 15-31 IV neutral, 7-22 IV +Def > 5-7 dmg ... 23+ IV +Def
  • Roxanne chart (Rock Tomb) > 17-21 dmg ... 0-6 IV -Def > 16-19 dmg ... 7-14 IV -Def > 15-18 dmg ... 15-31 IV -Def, 0-14 IV neutral, 0-6 IV +Def > 13-16 dmg ... 15-29 IV neutral, 7-13 IV +Def > 12-15 dmg ... 30-31 IV neutral, 14+ IV +Def

RUSTBORO CITY

  • Run left to activate the cutscene, then up and right to Route 116

ROUTE 116

  • If you have <50% HP and an Oran Berry equipped, remove the Oran before entering the grass
  • Experience management:

Do not grind for experience; just kill wild Pokemon along the way Get 36 experience and stop there with x/x/29+ IV Attack (unless Speed is 30-31/14-20/4-10) Get 36 or 148 experience from wild Pokemon with x/31/14-28 (or x/x/29+ with any of the above Speed IVs) Get 148 experience with everything else

  • If at any point you see an Abra, catch it (Great Ball)
  • If at any point you see a Taillow, catch it (Tackle/WG + Great Ball)
  • Take the bottom path, carefully dodging the rotator (you can manip him by running to 1U, 2L from him)
  • Dodge the spinner (second trainer) in one of two ways:
    1. Run to the tile immediately to her left, then walk up 1 and bag manip
    2. Run to the tile 2L from her, then walk right 1 and up 1 and open just the main menu. If she hasn't spun to face up, it's a safe pass. If she has, repeat this manipulation until she doesn't spin.
  • When you reach the double spinners:

Fight the bottom spinner for experience (WG) Wait for the top spinner to turn, then open the bag and teach Rock Tomb over Growl before passing For the second pass, run to 1R, 1D from him, forcing him to face down, then walk up to let the Hiker see you Hiker: WG

  • Enter the cave

RUSTURF TUNNEL

  • Kill Whismurs for experience as necessary
  • Aqua Grunt: WG x2
  • Exit the cave and head toward Rustboro

ROUTE 116 (part 2)

  • Avoid the top spinner by jumping the ledge above him
  • Use the same manipulation for the second spinner as you did in part 1 (but from the right side instead of the left)
  • Carefully dodge the rotator again (you can manip him by running to 1U, 2R from him)
  • If you have Abra, leave the route for good. If not, grind for one unless you used your Great Ball OR have all your experience AND a Lv. 7 Taillow (in which case leave for now)

RUSTBORO CITY

  • Mash through the cutscene, then Teleport back to Petalburg (if no Abra, run back to Route 116)

ROUTE 116 (part 3; only if no Abra)

  • If you have a Lv. 7 Taillow:

Use a Repel Switch Taillow to slot 1 Pick up the Repel to the left of the Bug Catcher rotator Grind for Abra (25% chance with Taillow in front rather than 10% without) After catching Abra, switch Mudkip to slot 1, then Teleport back to Petalburg

PETALBURG CITY

  • Run west to Mr. Briney's house on Route 104 (cut through grass if Repel is still active)

  • Pokefan: MS x2-4
  • Stop one step before the grass and equip Soft Sand + use a Repel
  • To dodge the spinner, run to the tile 1L, 1D from him, then walk right 2 and open the main menu. If he hasn't spun to face right, it's a safe pass. If he has, repeat this manipulation until he doesn't spin.
  • Pick up the hidden Full Heal (2U and 4R of the spinner)
  • Rival 2: X Attack x2, X Speed, heal to ~45 HP, Mud Shot x2, Rock Tomb

You can't wake up from sleep on the first turn you try to attack, so waste this turn BEFORE healing If you get burned, you need to heal the burn before killing Slugma. Double burn = run over You need to be able to survive an Absorb from Grovyle before killing Slugma. Grovyle does 40-48 on 0-2 IV -Sp. Def, 30-36 on 8+ IV neutral, and 34-40 on everything else Grovyle generally does 9 damage with Quick Attack. If you are 100% sure you'll get QA, use a Potion to heal; otherwise, use a Super Potion If you miss the first Mud Shot on Grovyle, you can sometimes manipulate Quick Attack by healing to an HP at which Absorb hits Marshtomp into QA range. This gives you another chance to hit the first Mud Shot at the expense of a Super Potion You can usually finish Grovyle with Tackle to avoid super-effective text If you have x/30/15+ IV Sp. Attack, you might want to double Tackle Wingull to manipulate Torrent

ROUTE 112

  • To dodge the double spinners after the cave, wait until both are facing away, then bag manip
  • To dodge the spinner after the double spinners, bike 1L, 8D from him, then bike up. You must be biking at full speed on the way up.
