Quick-Start Guide (how to start running Momodora: Reverie Under the Moonlight)
Updated 5 years ago by SNeaky

Welcome, friend!

This guide should help you get you started with running Momodora: Reverie Under the Moonlight. Should you have any questions during or after reading this guide, head on over to the Discord. The link can be found at the bottom of the page or in the sidebar!

Versioning (1.05b > 1.06)

The 1.06 patch had a note that read:

  • Changed character interactions with NPCs/in cutscenes. Now Kaho turns back to human if you talk to NPCs as a cat.

This change loses a couple of seconds over the course of the run. We suggest that you switch to version 1.05b to have a level playing field with the rest of other runners.

How to switch to version 1.05b:

  • Navigate to your steam Library and right-click Momodora: Reverie Under the Moonlight
  • Select Properties in the context menu
  • Click the Betas tab
  • Select beta - public beta in the Betas dropdown

The dropdown will look like this.

Setting Up the Autosplitter

Make sure you've made the switch to version 1.05b in the previous section in order for the autosplitter to work. The autosplitter will not work on version 1.06.

How to set up LiveSplit:

  • If you don't already have LiveSplit, download it here
  • Open up LiveSplit
  • Right-click the main window and select Edit Splits... from the context menu
  • Enter Momodora: Reverie Under the Moonlight as the Game Name
  • Above the list of splits, you should see 'Auto Splitter is available.' with an Activate button on the opposite side
  • Click the Activate button

Your LiveSplit should now look like this.

Bonus instructions:

  • Click the Settings button
  • Uncheck the Reset option checkbox
  • Make your splits based on the splits you keep checked in the Settings page (and in the same order)

For example, you could do your splits like this.

Difficulty Differences

1. Starting Items On Easy (and only on Easy) you will start the game with the Adorned Ring and the Medal of Equivalence equipped in your Passive Slots. The Medal of Equivalence can be an issue because it slowly restores your HP if it is not full, and in order to acquire the boss items that will allow you to go as fast as possible, your HP cannot change during boss fights. When following the route as is, you will most likely be replacing the item pretty early into the run, but it is definitely something to be cautious about if you're running on Easy.

2. Starting Health All of the difficulties have different starting health.

3. More Enemies Hard / Insane have more enemies than Easy / Normal.

tl;dr Rules

  • All categories require that you finish with the True Ending; that means getting the credits after the Accurst Queen of Karst.
  • You cannot have an input (eg: X) perform a Roll and a Jump. However, you are allowed to have multiple inputs (eg: X, Y, Z) perform a Roll.
  • You must show the keyboard bindings screen when submitting a run.

The keyboard bindings screen looks like this.

"How should I start learning the run?"

I would suggest that you watch this video in particular regardless of which category you plan to start with. There's a lot of good information in it for someone who's learning the run.

If you think that video is for babies, I would suggest watching either of the Easy / Normal current World Record videos and asking questions in the Discord.

If you're interested in AVIB, all of the Ivory Bugs and Vitality Fragments are documented here.

"Which difficulty should I start with?"

It's up to you, really.

Easy is a safe difficulty to start with; you'll probably only die if you fall in spikes. Normal is the main category (if that matters to you); you'll probably die a little more often. Insane is for people who like a challenge; you're going to die a lot.

We're all decently friendly and enjoy a good cat picture. https://discord.gg/yvfyApb
