Separating the board by platform would be great.
It's not a matter of liking the way it's set up. It's a matter of being able to post competitive times on an even playing field. The glitch isn't simply a strategy. It's a clear advantage, and it's one that isn't available in certain versions. I wouldn't have any qualms if it was available in all versions but I wasn't skilled enough to execute it.
Other than the glitch discrepancy, I really appreciate the fact that you have included so many categories. I was considering running only the categories that are inherently glitchless (you can't use the glitch when getting all stars, for example), but a separation of the platforms would be perfect.
I'll get a run together, soon :D
@DarQ btw, it's only faster on nightmare because of the glitch. Nightmare mode gives the player only one heart, and the glitch involves losing hearts quickly, so having fewer hearts means the glitch can be executed faster. Separating the platforms would eliminate the advantage.
Wish I could :D
#saltlyfe #speedlyfe And GO SPURS GO ;)
But seriously, that sounds epic.
I agree with darq. The point is not that there are so few glitches, the point is that the glitches are only available on mobile.
Though I will be practicing on iOS/android, I am personally not interested in doing runs on the platform. It is not a convenient platform for doing or recording runs.
Realistically, shouldn't the glitch be banned? If it gives an advantage to ios/android users, and if the game isn't popular enough to create two categories, then shouldn't the sole category be one that doesn't put certain runners at a disadvantage? Shouldn't the sole category be one that is the most accommodating?
I would agree with you, Jumpy, if the glitch could be done in all versions, but it's only able to be done in one version--and it's the version that is the least capture-friendly.
That said, I am only going by what Cycryl has put forth about the game. I haven't tested the other versions myself, but Cycryl has stated that the glitch is only possible in the ios/android version.
A couple that haven't been mentioned and that I consider beginner-friendly. They're also cheap:
Bloo Kid 2 (Available on steam, 3ds, and free on mobile. Lots of options for practicing.)
Mighty Gunvolt (Short run, board has plenty of categories, three characters for multiple play styles, available on steam and 3ds for portable practice, and very straight-forward platforming. Not to be confused with Azure Striker Gunvolt.)
Nice :D
http://www.speedrun.com/ots Out There Somewhere is an amazing game with an amazing community.
http://www.speedrun.com/Gimmick And Gimmick! is a NES game that squeaks under 10min. Some categories are much lower.
Both of those games are tough, but they are really good. I would also suggest OTS for a casual playthrough. It's just an all-round great game.
And if you ever get into the 10-15min range, there are tons of good indie, NES, and Game Boy games to go with.
You Have to Burn the Rope http://www.speedrun.com/yhtbtr
Shower With Your Dad ($1 on Steam) http://www.speedrun.com/swyds
I also have a few suggestions if you're interested in "full" games that aren't arcade-style, but I'm not sure if you are.
DarQ_Massacres is another user who is interested in these types of games. You can keep an eye on our pages for some interesting finds. He also made a similar post a couple weeks ago, looking for short games: http://www.speedrun.com/Speedrunning/thread/9plg0
And just a few minutes ago, I found the user Leery's profile. They have some interesting games as well, especially the two at the bottom, [revive] and the other one. Those are part of a series, but I haven't looked that far into it, yet. http://www.speedrun.com/user/Leery
Yeah, there is software and there are websites that provide multi-casting services. And the main stream that I watch that does this, they are able to consolidate all of the chat into one feed on their end. Granted, they are a talk show with multiple participants.
I've heard from people who are afraid of abandoning one site and possibly losing a chunk of their viewers, should they gain traction on another site or get partnered. I personally wouldn't fret about it as a streamer, and I wouldn't create any backlash as a viewer.
@furrywulfz I agree :D
Did you change your avatar, or was I just not paying attention? haha (rhetorical question! Don't answer! No more spam! :P )
"What an absurd question."
It's actually not so far-out. A distinction can be made between "play" and "perform". A distinction can also be made between the definition of "play" as recreation and the seriousness which some players engage when "playing" a game. To say "performing a game" or "seriously engaging a game" doesn't ring true of general nomenclature, but "doing a run of" or "performing a run of" or "casual run" or "WR attempt" or "serious runs"--these phrases all reflect different levels of "playing" a game, to the point that they could be considered outside of definitive play.
EDIT: I might have thought too much up there. Basically, at a certain point, speedrunning becomes about making correct actions (performing), rather than creativity and exploration (playing). "Playing" became a general term for "doing" when it comes to video games, and it doesn't reflect all of the levels of "doing" that gaming actually encompasses. That said, all runs start out un-optimized, and all glitches/tricks/strategies must initially be discovered, so there is play involved in speedrunning.
He never said what year!
@furrywulfz
I disagree with your idea that a category doesn't attract runners. I have personally been looking for games that I not only wat to play, but that also have categories structured in a way that would allow me to practice the way that I like, while still allowing me to post my progress on the board. I like to practice level-by-level, then section-by-section, then finally put a run together. I started playing Hotline Miami right out the gate, full runs every session, and it has left me stagnant. For the most part, individual levels is all that it takes. But, not all games have IL's on the board.
I have no input on the Mario Kart discussion, but I do feel that this specific idea of yours does not generally reflect the views of all runners.
That said, I do agree with the idea of running a possible category before proposing that it be added. There is a particular game that I like so much that I'm not letting myself be deterred by the leaderboard's lack of polish. The game basically plays entirely differently on NG+, and there is a hidden Hard Mode, yet neither of these categories exist. I'm currently slaving away in the shadows, putting together a NG run to post, then a NG+ run--and then I feel that my idea will be credible.
@mario Kart @furrywulfz, kind of continuing :p
(I guess I do have something to say about Mario Kart, but I understand that I'm butting in to someone else's convo.) My situation with the one game is much different from the MK situation being discussed here. There is no community for the game that I'm playing, save for an MIA mod and a mysterious, pseudo-inactive runner-mod. There is also only one category (there is NG and 100%, but I have never seen an active 100% board. If anyone reads this and wants to show me one, I would actually be delighted to hear it.) MK is very active, there are lots of people playing, and there are tons of categories. If I were in a situation where I wanted a category added to that game, I would start a thread in the forum, have people post their videos in the replies, and keep track of the times in the original post (username-time linked to YouTube/twitch vid. Simple.) That way, everyone that wants to do that run has a place to show their progress, and you might garner enough interest that the mod would have no choice but to add the category. With enough activity and interest there, and if the mod still refused to officially add it, then I might have a gripe.
That's what I would do, having my perspective on the situation. I don't run Mario Kart, nor do I intend to, so my perspective is severely limited. If anyone wants to discuss my idea as it pertains to the Mario Kart situation, please know that I do understand that I do not have a say in how things progress. My idea is very general.
He never said what time on July 29th!
However, it's already July 30th in China...
Thanks for responding!
That's a good point about watching runs live. I usually end up watching videos from the leaderboard, but there is an advantage to watching all the other attempts.
So, with a game like Boktai, every time you play it is basically from start to finish, or until you make an error?
I feel the same way about having a WR and being the only--or one of the only--runners. Besides Kirby and a couple other games, most of the games that I plan on running or that I'm currently practicing have zero to two runners, and the runners that exist are no longer active with the game. I look at some random games where someone created the page, posted what was basically a blind playthrough, and then never revisited it--and I just feel like that would be unacceptable for me. If I'm going to be the only time, then I want it to be the best possible. Aquas is a user here who has a pretty epic reason for running Ultimate Ghosts 'N Goblins Revised, as the only runner. He practices that game like a crazy person, with so much dedication, and his sole motivation is making a time as fast as a segmented run on SDA. I use his story as my personal motivation to run a game by myself.
I feel the same way about unknown games. I think that a lot of people might only want to play games that are popular, but a game's popularity has to start somewhere. I like your attitude.
btw, is the solar sensor of Boktai an essential function of the game? Does the emulated version account for that at all? Is there any advantage in playing with the actual cartridge? Oh, I just noticed that the categories are split, so maybe there is a difference.
Not to keep going off topic, but the original question has been answered, so I think I'm safe :) ...
Is there a reason why more people don't stream to multiple sites? Is there a stigma that I'm not aware of? Is it actually a headache? I know sites have an exclusivity clause if a broadcaster partners with them, but does that effect non-partners?
@Superspyro64
Thanks for the response! I'll check out that tutorial. I've seen one, which was the only one that I could find, so hopefully it's not the same one :D
Quick question: what do you consider to be a meme game, and why? You say that most of the games you play are meme games, but I wouldn't consider any of the games on your profile to be meme games.
I can't listen to "Awake" without imagining the game's sound effects. "Huh-huh-hooh!" :p
Human: Fall Flat looks like a fun choice for a short run!
And the leaderboard is all Swedes! You've got to give them some friendly competition from next door ;)
Yeah, that makes more sense. I think I was looking at it the wrong way. Still, if someone came along that wanted to post their times here, wanted to keep the board up to date and was willing and able to consistently do so, I wonder if they would be allowed to.
It's just a thought that irks me a little bit, but I understand the idea better now. Besides, I don't run DKC.
