It seems like there is enough interest, so added Original Edition categories to 'miscellaneous' and all 3 current runs.

Sorry for not responding for a while. As for this versions, it seems it's actually official NES hack released by Nintendo. In that case, if there is some interest in running it, new categories can be added as miscellaneous. First, you need to provide some run of it though to not have obscure empty categories on leaderboards.

From what I saw, this is just an emulation, not a port. There were actually versions of Donkey Kong, where ladder glitch was impossible, so maybe they used that one in this release. Nonetheless, at first glance, it looks like early, poor quality emulation, hence it should be banned for not being accurate enough (same way as JNes and other bad emulators are treated).

I have no idea, anyway this leaderboard is only for NES version of the game. There are separate pages for other versions. You should ask there, if you want to.

Messen is one of the most accurate emulators, so it's definitely allowed. However, you need to make sure and check every game's rules, cause in rare cases it was banned (e.g. Super Mario Bros.). Checking rules is the first recommended step anyway before starting any attempts , for instance it's clearly stated in Donkey Kong's rules, that Messen is allowed.

As for timing, there is no requirement to time your runs live and show it on the video footage, however it's recommended if possible. Recording livesplit and emulator at the same time isn't that hard with the help of some basic tutorial, if you are utilizing some broadcaster software (like free and one of most popular: OBS/OBS Studio). One more important remark: DON'T record via some options inside emulator. Submitting emulator movie is usually not acceptable, since it's very easy to cheat with it and impossible to notice it (like skipping the usage of save states).

Sorry, missed all messages in this topic somehow. Anyway, going back to topic about 3 categories: -as said, glitchless was discussed earlier and it's just not enough to make new category

-5 loops is just arbitrary category (can be 3,4,6.. etc instead of it), so shouldn't belong to main board. '1 loop' in the name of main category is there just ot make it clear.

-after some research, I can cofirm, that we should add Game B. Although, level 1 is the same, rest is different, so it gives enough variety to short 1 min game. Level 3 can have the same route in both cases, however it's less probable for B, due to 4 flames on screen instead of 2. Most importantly, optimal route in level 2 is faster in Game B, since , if you happen to get good flame and spring pattern, level can be completed without stopping before spring at all, which is impossible in case of Game A.

Warpless means no warps, so no stage can be skipped by means of them. You can enter secret zone to get the crystal, but you need to go back to the same level (using EXIT). I will add to the rules more precise information.

Some of the runs were removed, cause they used hacked version of DK, which doesn't have Nintendo licensed information on title screen (runners need to watch out for it, it's quite widely spread on internet). Others just didn't show title screen at all, but I think it wasn't clear requirement back then, so can think about restoring them , just assuming they all utilized proper version (though any new runs without that proof in video will be rejected, always include reset from previous attempt or at least from 'power on', if you happen to get PB on your first attempt).

As for top rejected runs, it will stay as it is, unless runners will give proper evidence, it's not cheated(like video of some previous PBs, session showing their skills), since they don't have history of any earlier progress, are quite unknown runners generally and e.g. 1:02.380 run is executed insanely precisely with whole level 2 being done frame prefectly (it's the only way to get 4400 on timer). Apart from that, all 3 are missing information what emulator was used, reset from previous attempt or any additional display on emulator (like info about FPS or 'no movie' - second one available on FCEUX). That's too much to accept extremely good runs.

After consultation with garadas21, initial decision was made to merge categories again, since previous action to seperate emu was taken without enough grounds for it.

First reason stated, that on emu is harder to recognize potential down+right left+right inputs and that keyboard gives some general advantage in movement, however this is true for many other NES games, where it isn't separated, Besides, banned inputs can be achieved on real console as well via unlicensed controllers. It was discovered as well, that on some emulators barrel manip in level 1 ( which saves 0.3s) is 100% consistent , whereas on some consoles it's around 50-70%. Nonetheless, it doesn't make emulator runs any faster, just potentially a little less reset-heavy , when grinding for most optimized time and only in some cases (still on certain not researched consoles it can have 100% consistency). Taking into account those two arguments, they are not sufficient to split the leaderboard. It should be conducted only, when clear advantage over console exists ( e.g. faster performance due to tricks, which can be executed only on emulators).

Before putting this change into effect, we will wait few days to get community notified and see, if there are runners against merging.

I will do coop very soon with palo. For me, there is no other way than doing it without game over abuse. There is no reason for second player not to join, if he's still able to. Otherwise, it just cannot be called true coop run.

I was actually thinking about this one. Level code cannot be allowed and that's no doubt about it. It doesn't even give you ending screen. Although, there is continue code in this game as well (start+up on game over screen) after you lose all your lifes and it gives you proper ending. It's hidden, but it's in-game feature, which can make it easier for the starting speedrunners in this game. Plus, it's not any kind of advantage, cause you are not able to get close to best times using it. Taking that into account, I would consider this as a legit way of beating the game, but first want to know opinion of the other runners.

Sorry for late response. I'm not aware of any kind of tutorial but can give basic advice for now: to gain fast momentum as in speedrun you have to first gain speed with holding B for a moment while walking , realese direction button (right or left) then press down, from this point on you will have the fastest speed. You cannot press left or right (or you will immediately lose it ). To keep it, you have to stay in the air jumping asap every time you land or mash down being on the ground, so character will slide and keep it as well. Sliding underwater works in a little different way: you have to press A then down around 3 frames later. It's very precise, annyoing and if you miss it (which happens to everyone) you won't move at all. You can always try to mash down and A (trying to keep this 3 frame difference between them) and it still should be usually faster than just swiming through the level.

One more thing: don't try to copy route from the best two runs on leaderboards. They utilize much harder and just a little faster Furbal starts in world 3 and 4 plus Buster only wacky land. The best way is to watch garadas' 12:44 former WR, where plucky is used till final world. I don't recommend attempting Furball route untill around low 13 time, when you should already have quite good feeling of the game

One more additional thing: watch your carrots, if you finish world having odd multiple of 11 (11,33,55,77,99) you will get bonus round, which cost around 13 sec if you die there fast.
