That is something I forgot to mention as well. We can certainly work out a pre/post patch thing for ILs as well
Don't worry! I haven't forgotten about this! Unfortunately, the issue with the patch is more major right now and is our top priority. We'll certainly keep this in mind as we develop a solution to that and come back to this afterwards if need be!
@Nrr, I don't think difficulty would be a problem. I think I should be able to design the boards in such a way that we wouldn't have a Simple - Expert run. It'd take a bit of rearranging from how we do it now, but I think it is in fact possible.
If we wanted to, with a Legacy category, we could also add a tag or something to indicate the version instead of making separate categories. Either that or we can say screw it and not worry about which version is being run. Just some things to consider with that option
For those of you not in the Discord when we had this discussion earlier, I want to make a few comments:
-
First and foremost, thank you for all your constructive feedback. We're not always going to agree on everything, but I want to make sure that this community is one in which you are able to voice your opinions. Furthermore, I want to make sure that you feel like your voice is being heard, regardless of how things turn out.
-
We're not always going to get everything right, despite our best efforts. People see things from different perspectives and what may seem right to us, may very well not seem right to you. Things we think we've thought out well will likely not consider everything. We're only human, after all. So thank you for bearing with us as we make mistakes and missteps here and there. The important thing is not that we make the mistakes, but that we fix and learn from them.
Taking these things into consideration, there has been a very vocal outcry from parts of the community regarding the issue of the patch. I will concede that we probably acted a bit too rashly with our plan to deal with the patch. I believe that we took a lot of the initial opinions about the patch and made a decision based on that, without fully asking the community their opinions. For this, I sincerely apologize.
So, after today's discussion, here's what we're going to do about things:
-
For the time being, we're going to leave the boards as they are. This is only to ensure that we don't screw them up any further. I would highly recommend not submitting any Glitchless runs at this time, as this will likely be one of the main things changed going forward. I would also recommend holding onto any runs performed on the new patch until we figure out how to handle them. If you want to submit those to any non-Glitchless category, feel free to do so, as we will not reject them solely on the basis of being on the new patch. I imagine this will not be an issue for a large portion of you. however.
-
Hopefully by the end of tomorrow, I'm going to create a poll to gather community opinions on potential solutions. Please take this when it is ready. I'm not sure how we'll do it yet, but it may very well be done in the speedrunner-only channel on Discord, as I would like to limit outside influence on this matter as much as possible. I'll make an announcement when it's ready. The poll will likely only be open for a few days, so please make sure you take part ASAP.
-
After the poll closes, we'll look at the results and implement an appropriate solution, hopefully within a day or two.
Again, I appreciate the conversation we've had about this matter thus far. I look forward to working with you all to create a solution that works better for the community. Thanks for your patience and willingness to work with us as we continue to develop as a community.
Can you point out specific instances? I'll look over everything over the next day or so to make sure
As of right now, there are no plans to separate the patches aside from what we've already done. If there is enough interest in doing so, we can consider it, but honestly it'll probably only affect a small proportion of the community
For those who are unaware, as of today (December 1, 2017) a patch has been released for Cuphead, updating it to version 1.1.3. Full patch notes can be found here: http://studiomdhr.com/cupdate-patch-notes-v1-1-3/
I'm not going to go into detail as to how this patch affects Cuphead itself. That's what those notes are for. There are also many members of the community who are working to figure specific things out, so you can always ask in the Discord. Hopefully, we'll have a document or something set up soon with a list of specific changes.
However, with this patch, a major change is coming to a few of the categories, which is why I'm writing this post in the first place. The major change is regarding what patch you play on. We feel that it is in the best interest of the community to require any and all Glitchless runs to be performed on the current patch. This has been updated in the rules for those categories.
While this patch prevents some of the major glitches from happening, we are aware that there are minor ones that can still be done on this patch. As the name suggests, these are still banned.
As for any non-Glitchless category, we are not restricting you to use a certain version. If you want to run it on the new patch, that's fine. If you want to run it on the old, that's fine too. There are certainly going to be differences in times due to things that were fixed within the patch, but that is something you'll have to accept should you choose to run on the newer patch.
In accordance with these new rules, the boards for the Glitchless categories have been wiped. I understand that this may be frustrating to those of you who had runs. Trust me, I get it. However, it is something we had to do to uphold the integrity of the boards.
If you have any questions about the new rule set or about how this affects the boards, please ask me or one of the other mods and we'll be happy to try to answer your question to the best of our ability. Thanks!
Pause glitch still works
As far as categories, I'm going to make a forum post and a Discord announcement about it here shortly
Yup! We're working to figure out how best to fix the boards to reflect this patch. We'll try to have that implemented ASAP
Yeah, that's kinda the approach I'm taking with it at this point. The plan is to do an All Bosses - Regular race for SG in December, then we can organize something bigger (whether it be a tournament or league-type event) for next year when we have more time to plan it out and can get more participation.
If you want to participate in the race, let me know!
No, it's perfectly fine! I can't blame you for not being here for it! Sorry if that came off as rude or anything :)
Jason, in regards to your suggestion about renaming the categories, that isn't something we're planning on doing. I think the names work as they are and Any% is literally just beat the game and All Bosses is literally beat all bosses. There is a bit of room for discussion (which we've had already and I don't want to have again if I can help it) on whether the KD "bosses" are actually bosses or not and we came to a decision with a lot of community input that they shouldn't be counted as bosses. It's one of those things that regardless of what we do, there's going to be a significant split in the community. The name is liable to change if/when more bosses get added as well, so for the time being, we're just leaving it alone.
Also, I appreciate the feedback, but I'd suggest keeping this thread on topic, especially since it's a hot issue right now.
Just putting this here since it's worth mentioning:
Using menu glitch in ILs will result in your run being rejected, since we go off of the in-game time as shown on the scorecard. There isn't much of a reason to do this in ILs anyway since it doesn't save IGT, but I wanted to make sure people were aware of this, since I only just thought of it myself.
This also means that using this glitch will prevent you from submitting part of a full run for an IL submission for the same reason.
I know this is moving pretty quickly, but we don't have a ton of time to figure this out. I've talked to jaysee87 from SpeedGaming and after some discussion and the brief community input I've seen, I think the mini-league idea would be the best option. Here are some preliminary planning things to consider with that in mind:
- The mini-league would consist of three separate races showcasing the different categories: I'm thinking All Bosses - Normal, Low% - Normal, and 100% in some order, but this is certainly open for discussion.
- The mini-league would be held either over three weeks, for instance, say 12/6, 12/13, and 12/20 at noon EST (date and time can be adjusted, but participants need to be available for each race) or we could possibly do the races back to back in a single session.
- We'd be making a Google Sheet to keep track of times, standings, etc.
- In addition to at least 6 participants, we'd need 2 people to commentate and explain what is going on so that viewers can follow the action (and to keep the stream entertaining)
The other option is to do a single race showcase, either with the top runners only or do a big open-to-all community race. For these options, we'd have to figure out what to race and when to hold it.
I personally like the idea of the mini-league since it showcases the breadth of the community, but it'll also be the most time-consuming in terms of participation and planning. Regardless of what we do, we don't particularly have a lot of time to get these things set up, so the sooner we can get going on it, the better. If you are interested in participating or commentating, please reply with the following information:
- Which event would you prefer, the mini-league or a single race? NOTE: Please only commit to the mini-league idea if you want to participate in ALL races!
- Do you want to run the event or would you prefer to commentate? Would you be open to filling the other role if needed (for instance, commentating instead or participating or vice versa)?
- What is your availability (day of week and time)? Please include time zone. Note that if we go with the mini-league, this will be an on-going commitment.
- What category/categories should we showcase? For a single race, list only your most wanted category; for mini-league, list top 3 (please try to make them differentiated from each other, i.e. don't list Any% and All Bosses)
- For a single race, are you open to running any potential category, or do you only want to run a specific one?
- Any other questions, comments, concerns, etc.?
If you didn't see it in the Discord server, SpeedGaming is looking to showcase a little bit of everything going on in the speedrunning world. Here is the full post:
"Hi! I'm part of SpeedGaming, a speedrunning organization that features community events and tournaments on our Twitch channels (twitch.tv/SpeedGaming, SpeedGaming2, SpeedGaming3, SpeedGaming4). During the month of December SpeedGaming is going to be showcasing a little bit of EVERYTHING that is happening in the speedrun world. We want to get a sampling of all the active communities out there (any game, any era). It can be just about anything! Weekly races, showcases, relays, mini-tournaments -- we are open to all ideas." - jaysee87
I'd personally like to work with them to come up with something to showcase from the Cuphead community. If anyone is interested in participating, please use this forum to discuss ideas.
Things I think would work well:
- Tournament
- Weekly Race
- A Cuphead Mini-League -- a series of races with a different category per stage; would include an overall leaderboard for the "season"
- Relay -- Somebody take World 1, World 2, and World 3. We could either lump in Hell with World 3 or make it a separate thing if there's enough interest
Again, if you have any other ideas, feel free to discuss them here. Also, if you are interested in participating, we can start planning something as well. Thanks!
Alright, so this is probably long overdue, but we as mods have decided that bringing on a few verifiers to help out with our ever-constant backlog would be a good idea. So, we're opening up applications for this position.
If you want to be considered for this position, please reply to this post with the following information:
- Discord name (so we can communicate with you)
- General availability
- How much time you think you can commit to the boards per week
- Why you want to be a verifier in the first place
Please submit your application by 11:59 PM EST on Sunday, November 26th. We will be reviewing the applications afterwards and should have an answer by the end of next week. If you have any questions, feel free to let me or any of the other mods know!
Thanks for your interest!
Yeah, I'll agree that now it wasn't the best decision, but like Goodigo said, it'd be way too much work to go fix it, especially since the autosplitter is able to handle it
Glitchless 200% Pacifist is just a glitchless 200% run where you get pacifist on all the Run and Guns, I assume? If so, submit it under 200% Glitchless.
For everyone's future reference, the only categories we are tracking are those that are currently on the boards at that time. Feel free to run whatever category you want, but if it does not follow the rules of any of the already existing categories, we will not be tracking it. Submitting such a run to the boards will result in a rejection as a result.
That being said, if a new category falls under the rules of an existing category as in the example at the start of this thread. Feel free to submit to the already existing category. As long as it meets the requirements, it will be accepted.
Tl;dr - We are not creating new categories at this time. If a run meets the conditions set out by an existing category, submit it there. If not, just don't submit it. Doing so will cause the run to be rejected (not to mention that the mods will be upset for wasting our time)
We still have a little work to do, but we'll certainly be making progress. Thanks for the support! :)
