Personally I've seen someone clamp down on a button for Paper Mario to basically make it is so you dont have to sit there for the first 10 or so minutes of intro where all you do is hold B for the text. As far as using it for gameplay in smb1 I dont really have a problem with it if you did that. But I cant speak for every mod. I'd just say I would advise against it though since that kinda takes away from the spirit of playing this game.

Sadly there is no such spreadsheet. You should be able to get past 95% of the patterns with good reaction. I'd recommend playing 7-3 on many different framerules in the pellsson rom to get a good feel for it.

Thanks for the explanations everyone. I don't want to make the verification process any more complicated than it needs to be. We request Yotube or Twitch because it does help with both access to the video and makes it easier to time the runs. I certainly dont mean to offend anyone by the request. I just ask that you please be a professional about this because speedrunning is not a joke that you can just bend the rules for. We mods dedicate our time that we could otherwise be using for work or with family because we love doing this. Merry Chrstmas!

It's because that is the intended destination of that pipe. What we do is cause a "Wrong Warp" by having Mario be far enough to the right of the screen to trick the game into thinking we actually took the vine. I would recommend watching darbians tutorial on Any% for further explanation.

Congrats to GTAce99 for using the strat from yesterday to make a "perfect" WR in Beat 5-4! This video is an update to that strat to make it so you don't have to worry about cointoss and still be fast enough. Sorry for all the dead runs GTAce went through that could have been avoided with this.

Just a quick demonstration of the strats currently used in my PB and in the WR by GTAce99 along with a strat that I found that will allow for a consistent way to get the optimal framerule to World 5 to get there 1 framerule faster than the current WR.

How it works:

  1. Get the fast clip
  2. Jump pretty much anywhere in the wall to bump Mario backwards a little. (This is to avoid dying to the first plant and still line up the timing perfectly)
  3. Do a small (snap) jump at the very edge of the first pipe then hold down to go through the plants hitbox to go inside by 249. (Although an extremely high 248 will work as well.)
  4. Win cointoss in order to not die.

This demonstrates the 3 possible Mario Sprites that are shown once mario starts falling into the Minus World pipe. The 1st one is a sprite that I've seen on -0, -1, and -2. The 2nd one Always shows a -2 unless you have a noticeable bad clip and happen to get this one. The 3rd one is the only sprite that ever appears when you get a -3 for a perfect entry to minus world. This knowledge I guess is about almost as useful as telling whether or not you get Good Judges in 8-1. But I think it is cool to bring up.

Sweet Job Roopert! I will continue to work on making it so it has other games as well. At least Lost levels anyway because that plays off of the same Mario engine as SMB1.

Yeah I know Epicness has been working on automating it. I know it wouldn't be ideal for it to always be applied my hand. And it depends on the situation if it needs to be verified first. You can go ahead and submit it before its verified and i'll add you anyway. If it doesn't get verified later on or your position changes the board will change later on anyway. My goal with this of course is to give some incentive for people to run multiple categories ( and eventually other games) to help produce more rounded speedrunners in our community.

So I have been working on a new spreadsheet to serve as a leaderboard across all the SMB1 Main categories. Eventually I plan to add all main categories for every 2D Mario game on NES and SNES. There is a submission form on the 2nd tab so people can input their own information so that a mod (Currently just Me) can add it without having to research apply everyone by hand myself. i knew taking damage or powerups had something to do with it. I always noticed in my Beat 5-4 Attempt whenever i took damage but finished on the same in game second i was behind exactly .55 seconds instead of something according to framerules. So i ended up getting the same framerule and then add the time taken from damage.

HappyLee looked into it by changing the games code to Make the bullet shoot as early as possible no matter what in a TAS and even that was not fast enough to save a framerule over what we do currently. It is simply not RTA viable.

@pellsson Yes they are much better now thank you! For BBG I guess you can find out all the possible subpixels that work. (Somewhere in the range of 0xx-3xx) to show if it was good or not. But also similar to the FPG practice rom you can do it in a similar fashion. If you want to practice it the way I do it. I have Mario facing against the wall of the stair like always. Hold Down+Right and then full jump at the time bullet is half in and half out. And then you'll want to full jump basically 2 frames after Mario starts turning when he lands. But obviously many people have their own way of doing the inputs so that may be too strict.

No you cant eliminate cointoss. If you always jump at the perfect subpixel it all comes down to whether or not you interact with the bullet or the first or second frame you make contact. You want to hit it on 2nd frame to be lower for BBG to work. So cointoss can never be eliminated since it purely works at best 50% of the time because the game checks for enemy interaction every other frame.

@pellsson Cool ROM i just got it. My issues are that pressing right while pause causes mario to be big. This is an issue specifically for when i practice 4-1 FPG since i pause mid Air and make a savestate to practice that one from and i have to be holding right before I unpause. Also Select + A and select +B are popular savestate options for everdrives and powerpaks and giving us star power whenever we pause to make a savestate is a little annoying. Keeping the size toggle purely on the down button would be fine.
