1.) Specifically Dreamcast games on a Dreamcast aren't, really? Originally dreamcast games later ported to other things are among some of the most active in speedgaming (even if Sonic Adventure 2 is solo-pulling most of the weight). But the Dreamcast itself seriously has like almost no active speedgames that are uniquely it's own, it's all been ported to other systems.

2.) Pretty much 100% of the Dreamcast's good speedgames got pinched by later PC/Gamecube ports. Sonic Adventures, Jet Set Radio, Phantasy Star Online, etcera. Like, very nearly 100%.

3.) I ran IllBleed a while ago. I like that game and has no ports.

4.) i want to say Shenmue 2, but that's faster on Xbox. So. Fuck. I got nothing. I really don't. I tried. I went through every page of Dreamcast games on the website.

edit: actually it's probably Crazy Taxi, that's like the only good speedgame actually ran on Dreamcast due to some minor version differences making every other port ever-so-slightly slower.

i'm aware this is an amazingly depressing answer but yeah that's sort of how it is

EDIT: Random side note, but one of your articles has an error in it. Admittedly it's an error passed down from GDQ themselves but yeah: http://www.thedreamcastjunkyard.co.uk/2017/03/dreamcast-gdq-and-speedrunning.html#more

this lists Sonic Adventure 2 has having been ran on Gamecube. It wasn't, it was ran on the PC port. That was an overlay mistake from GDQ themselves and I hardly blame you because the only giveaway for it not being gamecube is load times and the life icon in the bottom right, but nevertheless.

I'll cop to adding time onto JP runs as soon as every other speedrun starts adding time to NTSC runs to compensate for PAL being slower on like 90% of all games ever to even the playing field for everyone who isn't american.

That's not happening because that's clearly ridiculous, right? So is this.

and frankly mate your time is like 90th on console you are nowhere near the stage where you should even be worrying about 15 seconds from JP. Just run the game, maybe think about buying JP later if you get into it more. Sheesh.

(p.s sorry to everyone else if it seems like i'm on the goddamn warpath about this american stuff but man this bugs me it's only EVER a problem if the fastest version isn't NTSC)

I'd vote to allow because I'm selfish and it's less complicated for me to verify that way.

¤is punched in the arm¤

i mean yes, ban the thing. I'm in agreement with the whole thing about third party mods potentially impacting the game state in any fashion.

"For instance, I think you can change anti-aliasing via the NVIDIA control panel. What does that do besides remove jagged textures? I also do not know how we would police that?"

Yeah this I don't think is really enforceable at all or even worth enforcing if it's a change to your actual computer hardware. That's just PC gaming doing PC gaming things.

"You guys don't seem to understand that a money barrier in a in the speedrunning community is a real thing"

You don't seem to understand that nobody really gives a fuck. Weird versions are faster. Deal with it. Your point is understood, it's just not relevant to how speedrunning works.

I don't see you complaining about NTSC being the most ran english version of Final Fantasy Tactics and every european has to pay extra to get a copy of that. It's only a problem with RE7 Console because YOU have to pay extra. Because the fastest version isn't the one you already happened to have. Sod off. You're not interested in fair, you just lack perspective.

this thread is rapidly turning into "Punchy gets mad at people who don't run enough games to understand what they're talking about"

" On the other hand games where u can't do something like that usually has the categories separated due to the time differences. "

This isn't true. It varies by game but for the most part competition centers on the fastest version where applicable. Therefore buy faster version.

"Also jp doesn't run by different rules"

why are you attempting to contest me on a fact I just told you why turbo isn't banned for those games. The Japanese speedrun community developed seperate from the western one, so they came up with their own rules way back when and it hung around for a few games. There's a reason Paper Mario is timed at credits end and it's not because everyone thought it was a good idea, it's how Japanese timing rules worked.

"If jp followed different rules that means everyone around the world would have different rule sets."

This is so goddamn stupid I can't see straight. It's a history thing. The japanese had their own community. So they had their own rules. Other regions didn't develop their own communities independently, so they don't.

" just so we can be competitive and that comes back around to how turbo makes for an unfair advantage and pretty much forces u to pay to win."

i like the bit where I'm being ignored on how this is no different for 95% of all speedgames forever

"That's why jp versions of games are separated on most games"

They're not seperated on different leaderboards within the Resident Evil series itself let alone "most games". Having to buy a faster version to go fast and be competitive is nothing new. And adding time or changing categories still doesn't change the fact that you're slower than that fastest version, it's just a change of framing device to make people feel better about running on a slower version. It doesn't actually alter the reality of the situation. I think it's best to just lay it bare and make what you prefer to make of it rather than trying to actively misrepresent the timing to make it appear fair when it isn't. It's unfortunate, but it's also how it is. Games and speedrunning are funny like that.

EnglandPunchy8 years ago

"unless it's the jp version (yea idk either)"

The Japanese speedrunning community has had historically different rules to the western side of things, their ruleset never banned turbo controllers.

"So if i have to drop another 60 bucks just to be competitive that's not fair to me. Why do i have to pay 60 bucks just be in the top 5 of speedrunners."

I continue to reject this as an argument, some versions are faster than others in a lot of games and you need to pay to acquire them, because they are retail products. Speedrunning is a measure of how fast you go and nothing else, time is a pretty decent indicator of skill, but not an absolute one and any attempt to obfusticate this for fairness sake misses the point of speedrunning. I'm solidly against adding time because it misrepresents the actual time, but I won't cry if I'm outvoted on it. I just don't agree.

I'm saying this mainly because RE7 appears to be a lot of first people's speedgame though, but this happens a lot in speedrunning with different versions being faster and needing to buy those because the timesave is either significant or hard-to-measure. Most games aren't gonna bend to accommodate like this one probably will.

Don't select any of those variables as a default value. It filters for the default value automatically if you have one defined.

" but on pc it is much easier to recover a crack version of resident evil in Japanese version comparratively to us ... "

By all means show me a way to do that and I will. I'll wait.

Ok, are you back now? Yeah, it doesn't exist, does it? Nobody cracked the censored japanese version. It doesn't exist.

so no, it's actually way easier to get the japanese version on console, you can buy it off the online storefronts or import the disc easy peasy. For PC at the moment, the only solution is to either be risky and break Steam TOS and use a VPN, or grab an actual japanese person and get them to gift the game to your account. The former is questionable and probably shouldn't be encouraged, the latter is just plain difficult.

"That spike death happened because jumping over it is arguably frame perfect."

Oh. Sorry. I'm only passingly familiar with the game, not sure how hard these things are.

I added a variable thing and sorta just set everything to 30 apart from a couple of mexicanjustice's runs because they were the ones people pointed out to me. Otherwise, I have no clue which ones are and which ones aren't.

edit: I can undo this pretty easily fwiw, but for the time being I at least want incoming runs to be marked with a value, since the person submitting has no particular reason to lie.

"Alright 28:12 in your run did look suspicious and I looked at other runs at that point and none of them had something like that happen, not sure if that's some new strat or what"

as soon as that happens you can see him jump around and fidget in place, as if he was momentarily disoriented by the sudden vertical movement like you would be if something like that happened

Literally just after that happens, the dude walks forward and basically walks straight into a spike and dies. I don't know why anyone trying to pull the wool over anyone's eyes and cheat a time would then include a really silly mistake. And then quite a few more deaths as the run goes on. It looks like a fairly ordinary ass speedrun to me.

this all strikes me as a pretty weak accusation levelled at a totally random dude who's been nothing but polite about it because he beat a popular streamer's (PJ) time. Fuck that. While IMO this is kinda bullshit, you're responding correctly d4gron, keep posting route videos, keep improving your time, it'll come around in time if you just consistently output runs and strats. Keep on keeping on.

The public opinion seems pretty unified to just not allow it at all.

my problem is that like

i'm not really sure how to tell by looking? Some people don't stream at 60 and if I'm perfectly honest I've got kind of a shit eye for framerate with this game. It's not much of a rule if I can't think of how I'd enforce it in verification.

"Idk the rules here so I won't suggest the name of the game, even if its obvious from my profile. "

It's ok to say your own game, we've had devs of things do contests and giveaways and stuffs here. It's actually super cool and encouraged, you're not gonna be told off for shilling.

also no it's not at all obvious from your profile

Not sure how well known this is, but I don't see it in any RTA runs. Lets you skip turning on the generator and that entire segment of the first floor.

kinda got a run in verification that's probably using 60FPS (same guy) so this is pretty topical

edit: or well, I did until someone else verified it

I'm keeping tabs on this thread, hit me up with some evidence and a clear direction of what ya'll actually wanna do, I don't really run this game at all so I can't make these conclusions myself (friendly reminder that I'm totally up to add new mods who actually know what the hell they're doing with SH2 to replace current dead weight). What runs have been allowed using 60 so far?

I would probably sticky this thread just so it's more visible and not prone to being pushed down, I feel like this should be the most pressing matter for the boards at the moment.

i get the impression this would just softlock the game because you wouldn't be able to trigger the series of events necessary to get the lamp off Margaret and thus, the Arm.

Still, there's probably something useful in all of that.
