The main issue here is transparency. If we had even the slightest glimpse of an idea of what ELO plans to do with the site in the future, people would probably not react so strongly when faced with these sort of big updates that come seemingly out of nowhere.
- The new widget bar layout for the main page was completely unexpected for everyone and completely changed the flow of information there (while also breaking a few things here and there at first, may I add), so people were rightfully shocked.
- The user profile layout change was similar in nature, except this time people actually wanted a rollback due to not wanting the news in the user profiles.
- The new ads also came from one moment to the next, with only as much as a one sentence acknowledgement in the latest news from this patch (so again, no preview). To make things worse, it's also in this process that they made the layout for 95% of the site (excluding the main page and user profile) very confusing and misaligned.
So what's the bottom line here? Should they stop pushing for big updates?
No, don't be silly. Of course we want updates.
However, by not getting more involved and getting in touch with the community themselves (rather than through C-mods and F-mods, which in contrast are awesome at this) they are continually shooting themselves on the foot. With a rocket launcher.
Yes, it's possible some users here might be a bit more riled up than they should be, but at this point ELO is kinda enabling it. They already have the tools to appease concerns through these forums and through the news, so they just need to appoint someone from PR and make a post every once in a while.
Where are we headed? What bugs/features are you currently looking into? Do you plan to roll out any other big updates we might want to take a look at before releasing it? It's anyone's guess at this point if you guys don't tell us.
PS: On that note, I really like that at least the moderation tools have a sneak peak, so at least that seems to go in the right direction, but we still need more in that regard. Baby steps I guess.
@dha I agree that the space at the right is broken, and I even explained a possible cause:
Ok guys, some bit of information about this:
After a bit of digging around, what I found is that this misalignment issue of the layout being shifted to the left seems to only happen when looking at pages without the new widgets bar at the right.
In other words, anything other than the main page or the user profile will have the issue, while those two will look perfectly aligned.
PS: Even when on the main page or your user profile, you'll still see the ads and the gap at the top. What I mentioned above is only for the shifting to the left of the layout.
So it's quite possible the new layout with the widgets bar is prepared for the new alignment, while the old layout without the bar isn't.
By the way: The Kappa and LUL emotes have stopped working for me here, while KEKW seems to still work. Is this the case for you guys as well?

From the makers of "Don't Break The Chain"...
"Don't Break The Site Layout"
Coming soon
Can't even see runs if I don't scroll down.
@dha If I'm being honest, I'll give them the defense on that one. The issue seen on that picture isn't so much the gap at the top, but rather the sheer amount of categories clogging up the space.
I hate the ads as much as the next guy, but gotta give credit where it's due
Ads suck, we can all agree on that, they make speedrun.com slower, look worse but Other then that Elo is listening to the community which is something we wanted for a long time, Even thought we got ads, It's pretty easy to get rid of them with ad blockers (unless you use a phone) Mostly it's the layout that's annoying but they are taking care of that, Besides the ads, the update is great!
@Firewall Just to make this perfectly clear from the start, let me say I 100% agree with you: this update does indeed seem to be a step in the right direction and I hope they continue evolving in this fashion.
That being said, it's really a shame that all the good work they've done on this update is overshadowed by the fact that the whole site layout gets broken the instant the update hits. I'm positive the issue will be fixed in a matter of hours and all will be good again (which I'm really grateful for), but was it really necessary to get to this point to detect something as noticeably broken as this?
@Merl_ I agree, but that's also the case whether I have it on or off. I'm not complaining about the ads themselves honestly (though I do find them pretty annoying), but rather that the whole layout looks shifted as you mentioned, and I currently have no workaround for that (adblock isn't affecting the alignment of the layout).
Try Ctrl+F5 to hard refresh. If they're still broken then it's a different issue so add a screenshot or something.
Did CTRL + F5 to force a fresh of the cache, problem persists. The weird thing is that while most pages look mis-aligned, for some reason the main page doesn't seem to be affected (for me at least).
EDIT: Here's a screenshot of how reading this thread looks like on my end. Notice how I have adblock disabled (and this is on 100% chrome zoom):
Layout looks mis-aligned for me as well, except on the main page. Maybe it's an issue with bigger screen resolutions? I'm currently on 1440p (2K).
"Pepsi for TV game." - Fat Man from cutscene (Pepsiman)
Just to give some context, for both Karoshi Suicide Salaryman and Super Karoshi I did runs on Bluemaxima Flashpoint and in both cases I sent it as "PC", which I feel comfortable with.
To be honest, unless your rips or your standalone player actually play differently to the original web version, I see no reason to disallow it. As time goes on, unless we accept these new alternatives, a lot of these flash speedgames are just gonna be inaccesible for new runners.
Hey there, welcome to the site!
I definetely agree with that sentiment. Once you start speedrunning a game, your whole experience while playing changes quite a bit, and going back to "casual play" can be really hard to achieve. That's not to say you shouldn't speedrun games you like, but you just have to make really sure you got everything you wanted out of the casual playthroughs before attempting runs.
Changelog for v0.6.5:
- Fixed some issues with the pointers used for PSXFin/pSX v1.13 that wouldn't let the auto-splitter work with it. Now it should truly be supported!
