I would very much recommend reading this thread https://www.speedrun.com/speedrunning/thread/pt010 for all these sort of questions new people have
If and when I've done a run, had the game accepted and set up the leaderboard, I'll definitely give it a cheeky plug on that adverts thread ;)
( @Pear The game is called Odd Bot Out, it's a physics based puzzle game on mobile)
Ok thanks all, I'm glad to hear that people do sometimes discover new games on the site without me having to advertise them!
I completely get the idea of people searching up a cool game to see if it has a speedrun page, and in fact that is one of the main reasons why I want to submit a new game to the site!
Here are 5 simple steps to crash your internet browser.

That's it
To any moderators of small games, what has been your experience with new people discovering your game and starting to speedrun it? Has anyone ever mentioned how they discovered your game?
Thanks! I agree it's a shame that it's not an offici leaderboard, but it's better than no leaderboard!
Sadly this game also has pre-programmed adverts while offline - this do not need to download so they load faster but they would still cause a problem. An emulator could work as well?
Edit: I've realised that playing offline might work because then the adverts are all consistently 5 seconds long, making exact timing easier.
For information, the adverts appear every few levels you complete and there are 100 levels in the game, so not compensating for them would result in somewhere around a minute timeloss to not paying to remove them. Also, the app data has to be cleared to start an entirely new run so having to re-redeem the purchase every attempt does not seem practical.
I am thinking of applying to have a new game on the website (the mobile game Odd Bot Out). However, this game has adverts that can only be disabled by paying, so I was wondering how people normally compensate for time lost to adverts without requiring runners to pay to remove them. Would it be better to just subtract 5 seconds (the length of the advert) from the final time per advert, or tell people to retime with the timer paused during the adverts?
It definitely would be interesting if the Google devs made an invisible skin for the snake or something.
Today I've been having issues where the site says it can't handle the request when I try to view the list of a user's individual level runs (https://www.speedrun.com/user/MrMonkey049/individual_levels)
It is only this specific page that causes problems, and it also crashes for other users too. Why does this happen?
As far as I know, the rules here used to be that video proof was only required for runs faster than a certain time, but after those runs without video were submitted there was a site wide rule change and now all runs require video. (The runs that did not have video before were allowed to stay up however)
Oh ok, I've always been setting it to wii u because that's the console I've been using but I'll remember that now
I'm pretty sure its the settings on your browser, rather than in game settings
You could, the problem is that this topic comes up every couple of weeks and the moderators always give the same answer (which is no). I expect you would get the same response on 3das too as the moderators on the original game also manage moderation of the switch version.
I did try to solve this problem a couple months ago by making an external spreadsheet leaderboard, but that hasn't been as successful as I hoped because
1- It is not very easy to find, as there are no obvious links to it on this website or anywhere else.
2- As I was completely new to the community when I made it, it has very little authority compared to an official leaderboard.
I can put the link to it here if you want, but I agree that it would be better to have a more reachable leaderboard here.
For which game?
I know that super mario 64 and sunshine organise their individual level leaderboards outside of speedrun.com (on spreadsheets or similar) - I don't know if they allow runs done on 3D all-stars however.
For super mario galaxy the moderators have decided to not make individual level leaderboards for 3D all-stars because not many people would run them - I have made an spreadsheet for these runs that a few people have used however if you are interested.
If you just want to be able to record a couple of runs cheaply then i guess you could buy a cheap capture card - as long as youre prepared for random problems popping up like how the audio starts lagging after 30 minutes, or it only works if you set obs to 60fps...
On the other hand, you could invest in a good capture card once, and then be able to play that game (and any others you want to record/stream) without having to constantly worry about some random problem starting.
Also, any categories on this page accept runs on both the original and the switch version, and there is a page on speedrun.com specifically for fullgame runs on the switch version:
