I think this makes more sense here: Limit the fps to a max of 60 as it is supposed to be played. This way consistency and fairness can be guaranteed and no one has to buy the best hardware or depend on different OS to gain any advantage. I know from gta speedrunning that in many games the fps gets limited to the original intended fps because the game either runs too fast or the game engine breaks, like in this game. Not sure how you estimate 1-1:30 hours, it is somewhere about 3:30 - 4h. Maybe you confused it with Emperor´s Tomb.
I see, but you also mentioned something with teleporting you up in the first level on youtube. Could you record it?
Edit: Btw updated the glitch catalogue with the wall/door clipping glitch.
It is the 5th level. ;) I remember I tried hard to get up there, but failed to find a way, even with the rolling glitch. Maybe you will have better luck than me.
@jocica I tried lowering my monitor resolution and it indeed works, but i get a max of 75Hz at my minimum resolution of 800x600. And it is not enough to clip through and as you said yes Indy gets stuck and thats it, even if I first crouch and get closer (or maybe I do something wrong). The trick in Babylon is just a matter of patience/luck I guess, place yourself close to the spot as possible and then try the rolling glitch until it works... you see Indy teleport because he cut off the failed attempts lol, same as I did in my video. I needed 6 or 8 minutes and then it worked somehow.
@q94471 I don´t understand how you get such high framerates, but it must be hardware/OS related.
Well I tried this installer from markusegger.net, but I needed to copy the stuff from CD1 to a folder and also CD2.GOB from CD2 to the Resources folder for it to install the game. Also I can only load saves with the .exe from the Resources folder otherwise it asks me for a CD even though I have the original one in (I didn´t burn anything to a raw CD though since I don´t have any here). Still with that I have the Oct 29 1999 version, but the game again caps to 60 fps and I still can´t clip through anything besides the one in Aetherium. :( You said you had it go up to 75Hz for you, on what version was that? I´m confused lol
I think he clipped with higher than 60 fps and not lower. Btw in Palawan Volcano there is also the place where you need Sophia to open a gate for you because it closes too fast. If you can clip through that, no need to free Sophia anymore, lol.
But more important:
- Can you check in your game what version you have with pressing 'F10' and then type "version"? I have fps limited to 60 by the game automatically on every resolution which seems to be because of the latest patch.
- What OS do you use, did you install the game with the 64-bit installer for windows?
- Can you clip through things like q94471 does and check if it doesn´t work with the normal 60 fps? I can reproduce only the exit blockade clip in Aetherium, the rest doesn´t work for me. It might depend on fps or version or both.
I tried to force the game to go with higher fps, but the game refused, although lowering the fps works. So the patch probably included some ingame frame limiter which sets a max of 60 fps. Well that could explain something, because old games very often break when they run with higher fps.
Can you still clip through if you limit it to 60 fps on your system? If not, then we could conclude it is a fps thing and the rules would need to be specified further. Would also be good if another person could verifiy or test this stuff too.
You should be able to check the fps by typing "framerate" in the ingame console. The normal game fps is 60, that is also what I play at. It is really a shame I can´t do all the clipping stuff, would save a bunch of time. I will somehow try to get the game installed with the original version without the 64-bit installer automatically patching the game.
That are pretty good finds. Only sucks for me that I can´t reproduce them in the game. :( I can only clip through in Aetherium at the part where the blocked exit is. The rest doesn´t work or I´m doing something wrong, don´t know. It might be that clipping works only on the earlier versions and was fixed on later patches, but unfortunately I don´t know how to downgrade to test it. In worst case it is OS related and is a special bug on Linux or something, lol.
Didn´t know this game runs on Linux, lol. Oh well my version says: Jan 28, 2000, 07:53:27 Release. I guess the 64-bit Installer patches the game to the newest version and it might explain why you still have those weapon holster game crashes. Else it doesn´t seem to matter because I still could do most of the tricks you posted on my version too.
And thanks for the save games btw. I could verify number 4, you can really bypass quickly there. As for the others, I didn´t manage yet. I also tested that it should take somewhere ~ 5:00 - 5:30 mins longer to do the following: ( 1st Marduk fight - load whip once - whip 2 platforms - get blue gem - chalk roll down - open blue door ) than getting to the blue door right away. You said you managed to get through in less than 5 mins, so bypassing the door should be the faster strat. it would also remove the annoying Marduk RNG if a reliable way is found. And it would make it pretty hilarious since you don´t even need to fight/see the final boss.
Do you think it is possible in other levels too? Palawan Volcano and Temple have a few closed doors that might be shortcuts.
@BionicHornet: I made a topic which has a link to the installer for modern 64-bit operating systems. Also you should never ask where to download games. Buy the game, then use the installer. And more important, this topic is about shortcuts/skips and glitches of the game, so no more unrelated posts please.
@q94471: What operating system is your game running on and which version of the game do you use? You can check it with pressing F10 during the game to bring up the console and then type "version". I didn´t manage to warp through any door, can you estimate how long it took you.
This is just a topic for those who don´t know how to make the game work on Win (XP / Vista / 7 / 8 / 8.1 / 10) 64-bit systems.

Look at the sections where the enemy soldiers run around the station. You will notice that in Sodas game they run faster than in my game and it is also same with the soldiers I control. So thats why I ask. I also don´t remember a speed option in the game.
Some rule need to properly define the correct game speed for the runs to be comparable. Otherwise in this case even though my strat is faster than Sodas he is faster in real time because his game runs faster.
Edit: After a bit research and comparing to the runs on the leaderboards I found this: http://steamcommunity.com/app/6800/discussions/0/882960771705386900/?l=german and https://www.gog.com/forum/commandos_series/bel_speed . it looks like the GOG version is the normal speed that it is supposed to run. Also your game runs faster than gltzs and his version seems to run properly.
- What is the normal speed that the game is supposed to run at?
If you watch some old videos on youtube like here:
Compared to a run I did last year (I have the GOG version):
- Can we be sure that the game runs at the same speed on all computers and that it is not hardware related?
Hm, well for me it is ok. Maybe you use an old browser or something, i dunno.
And np, its not your fault if the info is not in one place. it would also be good to have a doc with the routes for each level and a full game run, but I somehow am a bit lazy.. :D
Dont know, the images look good as they are tbh.
About the skip, I actually also found it just about a month ago, it is mentioned in the youtube comments. xD It is enough to jump to one platform and then back to the one where the bridge is. The lava moster dives and you can run across the bridge. If you have more, feel free to post them. ^^
About the game instability and bugs, did you install the game with the unofficial 64bit installer? I did and I don´t have such problems on win7 64bit. Only annoying bug that can happen when you pick something up, the menu can glitch out and you can´t access it anymore.
The first shortcut i mentioned in some videos on youtube and in the old SDA forums, but good to have it here anyway. The things in the third and last pictures are new to me though, nice finds. Also nice to see more become people interested in this game. :D
Btw if you or Brendon Meares know any glitches for N64 or find any then don´t hesitate to share them here. Would be good to have some info about them in the glitchless category topic.
This skips about 8 minutes of the Babylon level since the elevator area is completely loaded from the start! The first rolling glitch is extremely precise though, I needed like 8-10 minutes in average to get it. Will be a pain in the ass for single segment runs...
Glitchless category:
- Glitches defined in points 1.) and 2.) are NOT allowed
No Glitches/Major Skips category:
- Glitches and skips that are listed from points 1.) to 3.) are NOT allowed!
- Minor skips or broken animations listed in 4.) can be used
- All important items listed in 5.) must be collected and used as they were intended to
1.) Major Glitches: Chalk glitch: Making a mark with the chalk out of a roll makes Indy invulnerable to fall damage and for some reason you can walk in areas that have death zones in them. Also makes Indy move during cutscenes on some occasions. Rolling glitch: Equip a weapon (grenades, satchels or whip not working) and press quickly shoot + hold roll-button + (forward or left or right) + any direction and Indy will morph in a weird jump which is in most cases longer than the high jump. You can also access some normaly unaccessible windows because of the morphing. Backroll glitch: When you roll backwards and the animation finishes, Indy loses all momentum. That basically resets the fall distance, so you end up basically tripling the distance you can fall without dying. Wall/Door Clipping: It is possible to clip through a lot of walls/doors by running/crawling against them or moving left right while doing so or even activating buttons from the other side of the wall. In nearly all cases it requires very high FPS (at least higher than 75). Forward-/Sideroll glitch: When rolling forward or to the side, holding back arrow with combination of side arrows after the jump makes Indy land safe on the ground. This doesn´t work in all levels though.
2.) Minor Glitches:
- Sometimes using Taklits part you don´t take damage even if the bar has reached the limit.
- Crawling onto a lift and standing up makes the game adjust your Z-Coordinate somehow and you move up instead of down. You can hit the end boss (Olmec Valley) twice with the same lift.
- Using items while rolling/jumping is not allowed. You can place the Marduk head (Infernal Machine) from the wrong side and skip fall damage while placing the mirror (Teotihuacan)
- Using shortcuts to access areas that were intended to be locked are not allowed (in Sols Mines you can get to the blue gem early while the invisible water barrier is still there before unlocking it with a cutscene or you can jump on a broken pillar to get to the green gem room, causing rendering glitches because you are normally supposed to dive under water and access that room from below)
3.) Puzzle/Item skips: Palawan Volcano:
- Skipping pulley by running on steel rope Palawan Temple:
- Tricking Lava Boss to skip Taklits part. Jeep Trek:
- Not getting the missing plank for the second damaged bridge. Pudovkin:
- Skipping all/any machine part and the equipment.
- Jumping onto the crane hook instead of picking up the crate with the crystal for Azerims part and use it. King Solomons Mines:
- You can skip getting the oil can by jumping to the edge of the broken railbridge and you can skip getting the red gem, because you can somehow finish the level without using it. Return to Peru:
- Activating the falling boulder cutscene by jumping out into safety after standing in the hole where the stone fell out before, skipping whipping the statue later and getting the spear.
4.) Allowed shortcuts/skips General:
- Rolling into a climbing animation
- Using items while running Canyonlands:
- Jumping to the ledge on the other side instead of the intended shimmy to the left then jumping to the other side. Babylon:
- In the library making a few backsteps and jump up instead of pushing the block and then going up from this block. Tian Shan River:
- Crawl at the side of the railing and get into raft in the machinery room Shambala Sanctuary:
- Jump straight to the balkony where the plant is after you get the key, instead across all the platforms. Palawan Lagoon:
- Jumping backwards out of the window on the ship instead of going out through the door. Palawan Volcano:
- You can move while the "picking up the key animation" is still going in Palawan Volcano. Palawan Temple:
- Ignoring the boulder, by running against the wall next to it and jumping on ropes, stones, palm trees, skipping ladders...
- Jumping into the double boulder room, skipping a cutscene Jeep Trek:
- Ignoring the first damaged bridge by hitting the right edge with full speed before you take off.
- Bumping into stones/walls to elevate the Jeep. Meroe:
- Skip long shimmy section with the same trick as in Babylon described above instead of pulling out the block and pressing the button on the other side.
There are also more tiny glitches like some temporary broken animations, but they don´t give any advantage and can´t be really completely avoided through out a run.
