I heard that livesplit's gametime is inaccurate before, which is why I'm asking here in the first place, if it was, I'd never need demos as my runs won't ever be top10 material anyways. I guess I'll play around with SourceLiveTimer and just re-record manually when I need to, buffering the console seems about the same as the introvideo skip in Pokémon Emerald and I usually record demos up to the tick before the credits anyways, as I like having that in my PB videos anyways, so everything should be fine then. Thanks for the answers c:

Okay, just so I understood this correctly, because it seems to make literally no sense at all: Let's say we have a Game XYZ, with 2 Moderators, who haven't logged in for 2 years, because they lost interest in speedruns and now some runners start running that game and submit runs. You suggest there should be a system, that kicks the 2 previous moderators, because they aren't verifying the runs. But how does that help? 2 - 2 = 0, so there wouldn't even be anyone who's responsibility would be to verify runs, because literally nobody has permission to do that. We'd still need the thread for one or more active runners to become the new moderators of our example Game. Also this thread went full circle at least 3 times, like I said it would, since my last post, I didn't read all of it tbh.

For marathon-esque categories, I like the idea of having two instances of livesplit open, one with your splits and a pause hotkey, another one with the same start/hotkey and a layout without splits, so you can have both times, Real Time Attack and Real Time Attack - pauses with spits that are easier to compare with runners who took breaks at different times. For games that are up to 6 hours, you shouldn't need breaks, other than the ones the game provides in form of cutscenes. If the game doesn't have cutscenes or similar break points, then having the self-control over your body and having planned ahead, so you actually don't get distracted during your run, is part of the skills required for that run, like mentioned by @ZenicReverie above. For example I'm currently sitting here, having had most of my daily required hydration in a short time, waiting for the eventual restroom breaks to happen, so I can spend the rest of the day focusing on Pokemon Emerald.
I also do not buy that there are moderators who are super active in their communities offsite that have not logged into SRC, posted on a forum, or done some activity on the site in over 6 months, who would be affected by a system such as this.
Just because you don't want that to be a thing, doesn't mean it doesn't exist. If you really need an example: I don't see Dabomstew active on the PSR related games, yet he was one of the people who helped built an emulator that is 100% accurate, which helped the community a ton. And because nobody outside of the admin team can read the admin channels on the discord, it is impossible to answer who is actively helping make decisions there. How is it unfair that those people, the admins of their community, are listed as moderator on the site primarily used to display leaderboards?

Also there is a solution to the inactive mods issue: https://www.speedrun.com/The_Site/thread/63nr7 <- this Thread here. Works perfectly fine and isn't as abuseable as an automated system that leaves games with the original super mod, still inactive, still blocking the game. How do you explain that not making your automated idea redundant anyways. If you'd remove all moderators for inactivity, it'd become a "first person to raise their hand gets mod" type situation anyways, just automated, with nobody having an eye on things at all, pretty much just inviting griefers to snipe mod and ruin perfectly fine leaderboards.
I definitely do not agree that the discussion is RIP.
In my experience, once a discussion goes full circle once, ignoring all previous discussion, to repeat previously agreed on as bad things, it will keep going full circle from there on, most often not making any new points. Feel free to prove me wrong, but I'm already repeating myself here enough. To me you seem like you don't think people on here talk to eachother outside of the game forums, which simply just is not the case, especially nowadays, where even the smallest of games have a community discord, and that moderators are simply there to verify runs and answer forum posts, when in reality there is a lot more to their job, even more so when communities get to a size where you'd start to get a larger backlog of runs to verify, by which point there should be plenty of active community members, who will gladly pick up their wooden sword and become verifiers.

load is for loading savegames, you seem to be looking for the map command

I'd like to start running this game for fun and don't quite understand how demo timing works. Do I need to manually start the demo recording on every new map or do recordings carry over to the next map? And how do I time the demos when I'm done? I found one tool in the resources, but that can't time the first and last map accurately. Do I just go into playdemo, find the tick I gain/lose control and subtract that from the total demo length in ticks and convert that to seconds manually (I think I heard this game runs at 60ticks/sec)?
This could work for moderators who have not logged in for a very long time.
You forget that this website both lacks a message system and isn't the single only location any speedrunning community exists. There could very well be admins of game's or series' communities who barely use the site, yet are a vital part of the mod team on other sites.

This shouldn't be such a hard question, I want to say Portal, but I rarely finish runs unless I'm doing a new meme category and Pokemon Emerald is way more fun, but I gotta get past the, by now super boring, early game first, which doesn't happen nearly often enough. Movement in both games is unique and fun to me and Pokemon has the advantage of having been series I've enjoyed for years.

GermanyMitsunee7 years ago

JPN actually has that even on this board, no clue why english doesn't. A short-ish any% glitchless category would be something nice for in-between and any% Lance I'd definitely pick up for both Gold and Crystal.

I'd guess there could be faster loadtimes, just based on the fact that HDDs are usually faster than CDs/DVDs, when it comes to read speeds. I'd avoid it if possible.

moderator != verifier. There are plenty of mods for lots of different games who do lots of other work behind the scenes and never have time to verify runs. A ton of the games with inactive mods only have that one original super mod or would end up only having them, if we were to automatically purge the rest of the mods, for not verifying runs.

One example where such a system would fail is Portal, a game with a huge backlog and a few dedicated people doing their best to verify all the runs properly, while there are other mods there for other things like rule making or consultation, should a verifier not be sure about something. Making those people lose moderator status twice a year would only make for additional chaos.

@Seydie
Isn't that a bit rude? You are asking to reduce hand pain and you get answers to this.
Isn't it rude not reading what I'm saying and just answering with redundant things I already clarified that I'm not asking for that but ALTERNATIVES
- Maybe your stretching is wrong

 • Maybe you need to have more pauses between your runs
 • Maybe you shouldn't run too much
 • Maybe try massaging your hands
 • Maybe try different games without intensive clicking
 • Maybe some painkillers
 • Maybe try different controllers
 • Maybe try to use your feet
• 1 to 3 days pause between runs is enough
 • that isn't too much
 • good idea, I might have to try for that, even if I shouldn't try to afford it
 • Pokemon isn't intensive clicking, art isn't intensive clicking, both are very different types of inputting, both result seemingly adding up to increased hand pain
 • VERY bad idea suggesting painkillers, or do you want me to end up with yet another costly addiction?
 • Already explained that there is literally no alternative to using an SP.
 • SP is way too small for that and the gamecube controller tips over, also can't use my feet for pixelart, that doesn't work at all.

@Dickson while the emote in your message basically already gives away that you're just making fun of me, I'm not even getting the hand pain from gaming in particular, if you actually read what I'm saying.

@Peacefroggie messages like that is why this forum needs a report button

and overall this thread is a reason to give the OP the freedom to lock or delete the thread, like all other forum software does. I thought there were people capable of reading and proper answers, but sadly I am mistaking and I regret thinking that this forum hasn't gone to complete shit.

I'm not using a gamecube controller, as already mentioned before multiple times and I already mentioned that I have my hand stretches figured and that it's not doing enough. Should've known that posting here would just end up in a thread that repeats 5 times a day.

wrong way to go about this, because you're basically destroying the chance of exploration of more beginner friendly strats just because other people had different ideas.

How about the swings in...I think GTA4? Or maybe ABH in both Portal and Half-Life 2? (abh: accelrated back hopping, basically confuses the game to adding more backwards momentum, in an attempt to slow down the player, who went over the speed limit, even though the player is intentionally going backwards, not forwards.)

by whitelist I mean the literal whitelist in the actual rules. aliases to whitelisted commands are also allowed, see any of my submitted runs that use quicksaves at all. "you'd need a command that isn't on the whitelist" literally means just that: the fact that you would need the exec command, which is not listed in the whitelist. If it was on the whitelist, it would be allowed.

how is the demo recording plugin a "broken mess"? I've never had a single issue with it ever and it always worked correctly and as intended.

discussione: Portal
GermanyMitsunee7 years ago

if we're really precise, in order to use scripts you'd need a command that isn't on the whitelist that is in the rules.

with a little air strafing you can do it without having to ABH back and forth, although that didn't seem as reliable, because angled portals are seemingly beyond rocket science when it comes to kinetic energy. I started on the left side (a bit away from the wall) of the sewer portal (orange), with my blue on as far up on the angled surface as possible and then just strafed into it while crouching, made it over the trigger. The hard part is actually keeping the proper momentum when falling into a floor portal (in my example orange) again.

EDIT: https://www.dropbox.com/s/2bwbzcmvg5fkb69/aagless.dem?dl=0 <- have a demo
