  • The mods aren't adding any new categories for the forseeable future
  • Left+Right would barely help, and the only place where you could easily save time is 8-4 water section
  • People wouldn't want to put in the effort to get seriously good any% times in a category extension

That loses time as you still have to walk to the castle to have the timer start counting down.

Edit: To add more information, the reason this happens is because the backwards pole glitch is activated in 8-2 on the Japanese version of the game. When Mario grabs the pole during "bbg", he instantly snaps to the other side of the pole, but he isn't high enough to land on top of the flagpole block, just like regular bbg. As a result, he's ejected to the left of the right side of the pole, which happens to be inside the flagpole block. The rest of the end level cutscene plays out as usual where Mario walks to the right until he reaches a solid block, which in this case is the castle.

Full flagpole glitch crashes on both versions, but you aren't doing a full flagpole glitch here thanks to the backwards pole glitch.

I should point out that the only reason I'm doing this setup is that my snes controller doesn't let me do one frame jumps consistently at all, making 1-2g near impossible to do consistently. This is still definitely a bit easier than 1-2g though, so it's worth going for if you only want a 4:58, not a 4:57

Edit: Doing this makes the clip a LOT easier if anyone else is thinking of doing this

Getting a 380 in the underground only saves one framerule, and sometimes getting a 379 can put you on the same framerule as a 380. You absolutely do NOT need to reset over not getting a 380 until you're going for a sub 5. You're best plan of action is to try to get a deathless run without going for particularly fast strategies, and never reset for the first few runs even if you lose a ton of time. Once you get a deathless run, you should try to replicate that run but clean up mistakes, and don't add in faster strats until you have a very clean run with safer strats.

The head (and only) moderator for Toadette's Christmas Adventure appears to have deleted their account, so there is no moderator for that game. While the game is very inactive, there still needs to be at least one moderator there so that runs can be verified if and when they are submitted. Seeing as I have wr for that game and I have experience with timing NES runs, I'd be an easy person to quickly add as a moderator there. Thanks

I believe the ruling is that you have to use those exact emulators - there is a Nestopia core for Retroarch, but Retroarch is banned as it has lag reduction built in that isn't present on console. However, there have been some cases, such as with LeKukie, where specific variants on the emulators are allowed. It's easier though if you just use the standard emulators as long as you have access to some form of computer.

Assuming you mean the X and Y at the top of the screen, by default, the X shows mario's X position relative to the screen which is used in wrong warps such as 4-2, and I believe the Y shows Mario's X subpixel but I may be wrong on that. You can change those values to whatever you like, however - kosmic set one of them to bowser's remaining health when he was making his spliced 18:54 warpless run, for example.

  1. This is literally just a regular any% speedrun with a palette swap, which is nowhere near different enough to warrant a new category being added
  2. Read change #4: https://www.speedrun.com/smbce/thread/kof23

The setups for 7-1 bbg are also far more inconsistent than 8-2 bbg - think of kriller's lightning 8-2 bbg setup for a comparison. As a result, it would be far too hard of a framerule to be added in now, on top of the fact that you'd need to find a framerule that the bullet shoots fast enough on in the first place. As darpey says as well, it's far too late in the run to be considered to be the "next big time save" or anything like that.

NES classic is hdmi, right? Elgato make very good quality capture cards that support hdmi, although they can be fairly pricey. The Elgato HD60S in particular is a card that many people use for this, and I can recommend their products from my experience with them.

A thread like this is posted every other week. Nothing has changed. Is 4:54 possible? Yes Will it happen? Probably not, but maybe, and maybe is all we can possibly say right now Will it happen any time soon? No

I don't have a lot of time to write a proper post right now but here's what I can say:

  1. Here's a safe strats run showing consistent strategies that can get you around a 5:03 nearly every time

  2. Don't bother with pipe jumps yet - you don't need them until around a 5:02

  3. Learn BBBB in 8-2 as Aldyn says - you can get a 339/340 literally every time

PAL would be faster if one were able to pull off all of the TAS tricks in a row though :)

"I learn every hard trick consistently"

If you start out trying to learn flagpole glitch consistently, trust me in saying that you will not have a great time. It's a trick that takes people months to master, and learning it when you don't even have a pb will be so much harder on yourself than needs be. The reason why there are so many mid 457s yet so few low 457s / 456s in comparison is that people don't want to put in the time to learn the trick, so learning it when it's completely unnecessary will make you burn out faster than a candle being dropped into the Atlantic Ocean.

If you want to do flagpole glitch a few times in practice for fun then, sure, go for it. However, you really shouldn't expect to get any consistent at it without putting literal weeks of solid practice in, which you should bare in mind at your level.

@darG You need to release left immediately after you jump, but jump height doesn't matter - you can hold down a for the whole time or press a for one frame, it doesn't matter. The "perfect" pole inputs are L,L,L,L+A. With this, you would need to release left immediately after that last frame, but you may keep holding A

30fps is fine for runs, as caleb says. It's worth noting that you won't need to worry about frame counting unless you're playing at a pretty high level (<5:03 in any%, for example), so you shouldn't be concerned about it now anyway. Probably the only exception to this is 1-1 as fire mario which is always timed with milliseconds no matter what level you're at, so 60fps would likely be required for that.

  1. smb1 any% 4:56.4. i'm actually seriously underestimating what i could do. in theory, i could actually get wr by the end of 2020 provided that i still have motivation and don't get eaten alive by GCSEs. the trouble is that my motivation for any% is kinda inconsistent, and idk if i'll have the patience/time to grind for many months to get wr or even 4:55. that may happen in 2021 though if i'm still around then :)
  2. a thicc warpless time. 19:04 would be nice because that's what darb has, and i always end up watching darb's 19:04 for whatever reason. i'll go for 19:0x with small fire first, and then learn small fire.
  3. 2:32/2:33 minus world ending. i'll definitely get 2:33 because -1 full fpg is someFree but idk if i'll care enough to get a 2:32.
  4. onehand wr (preferably a 4:58 but i'll settle for a low 4:59). i was going for this back in like july/august of 2019 and actually had a few runs a framerule or two ahead of wr but they all died in tragic ways, most notably one run that would have been two framerules ahead of wr died to a bad hammer bro in 8-3. this run wouldn't be so hard do get because wr is free, but playing onehand for too long gives me major hand cramps so idk if i'd be able to get it because of that.
  5. 24.xxx 1-1 as fire mario LUL
  6. 10:5x 1 warp. i got 11:01 yesterday in a run that missed two frame walljump so that should be someFree
  7. a good smb2j any% time. i don't want to jump in and say 7:5x because idk how much i'll actually play it but i ran that category for a few days last summer and it was super fun. definitely going to play it again some time this year 8 ) learn smb2j warpless. i haven't even beat the game warpless yet but i'm told that it's a brilliant category to play as a getaway from smb1, so that sounds like a good blessing when i go for harder and harder times in smb1.
  8. play smb3 again. i learnt it for 12 hour challenge and then never played it again for some reason. ¯_(ツ)_/¯
  9. get a time in 16 star that i'm happy with. same as smb3 - i learnt it for a few days, got a kinda bad pb that i never even highlighted and then never played it again. ¯_(ツ)_/¯

these are all i can think of right now but i'll inevitably end up running something else

gl to everyone on their goals
