My goals for 2019 were: 1) get a 4:57 2) get good at warpless 3) actually put a respectable 8-4 il time up on the leaderboard that's better than 8-5 on emu lmfao 4) get a minus world ending time with 1-2g, which was something that i thought i might just be able to do back when i learnt the trick on emu in like october 2018 but didn't know if i could or not 5) most of all, be happy and content with most/all of my times
In 2019, I was able to achieve all of these goals, which is something that I'm super proud of. 1) got a 4:56, which is something that I never thought I'd be able to do back in 2018 (and tbh I still don't really know how I did it) 2) I got a 19:13 in a race, which was kinda bitter sweet as it was 19:11 pace until world 8, perhaps even 19:10 with a really good 8-4 but lost time to be cheaping out and going for bbbb in 8-2 and failing two frame. 3) I got (at the time) 4th place in 8-4 IL with an 8-2 with FRAME 68 IN A RUN. I still have no idea how that happened given how bad I am at double fast accel 4) I got a 2:35.1, which is a decent time but I hope to get a 2:33 in 2019 or even possibly a 2:32 by adding in -1 full fpg and a faster 1-2g 5) Every time that I've put time into I've come out happy: any%, warpless, minus world ending, 8-4 il, onehand (kinda). I could stop playing the game now and never have that driving feeling to improve my times, but I'll still try to improve my times for now.
overall, 2019 was great. here's to 2020
either a) 4:55.913 because of 9th attempt clutchness or b ) andrewg's 4:59 because of how big the sub 5 milestone was and still is
GG on the pb! That looks like a pretty decent time for the strats that you went for. Before I begin, everything Eddie says is correct - take note of what he said :)
One strategy in 8-2 that is very worthwhile adding and keeping until you have around a 5:00/5:01 is BBBB. This strategy requires a couple of tactical bonks, which give you consistent koopa patterns throughout the level regardless of what framerule you're on. This means that you can get 339/340 every time without much effort at all. Here's a tutorial of the trick
You also play incredibly safe throughout the run, which massively limits the times that you can get. One example of this is 8-1, where you wait on virtually every pipe. You have around a 10 frame window to jump over these, so it's completely free. Simply challenging more of these jumps throughout the run would save a LOT of time.
As eddie says, check out darbian's and/or kosmic's any% tutorials. These are what the majority of newer runners used to learn the game nowadays, including myself, and they're very good tutorials if a bit high level at first. Here's a link to darpey's 5:18 using completely safe strategies . Good luck on the runs!
That's a bug in version 5.x of the pellsson rom. Doesn't occur anywhere else
They're still the same inputs whether big or small, so there is no difference between them
i've heard a lot of people they didn't know how to get to the vine so they discovered primitive wrong warps instead, some even claiming that they did similar methods that we use today like bumps. i'm almost certain that quite a few people did wrong warps and just assumed it was a legit part of the game
Out of the three of them I'd recommend actually running the game on Nestopia as it seems to have the least amount of input delay, although doesn't have any TASing capabilities so you'll need to use one of the other two for that
He also got 3 runs past the bullet on the same night
Literal god right here
This shows the fastest strats that I could come up for in this game. A couple frames could probably be saved in 1-4 through a better fast accel and possibly not ducking above the first fireball, but this is pretty much perfect.
I could definitely see someone in the distant future pulling off the 8-1 framerule save in a run, so I believe that a low 4:55 will eventually happen, but the 4-2 framerule save is likely going to never happen - HappyLee's method is just ridiculous and KingOf_JonnyBoy's method looks potentially too hard to be done in runs as it's just 2 bump 4-2 with fast accels and an even faster pipe stop
Why would you want to play on mobile anyway? Emulators are free on PC and run better than on mobile, and you can even install them on most consoles with a few workarounds.
This is pretty much what everybody else has been saying but with a video
