So believe it or not, I actually own consoles made in the past 15 years, but I've only owned a schmancy flat screen since 2016. I don't have a whole lot of experience with the HDMI standard.
I'd like to get an HDMI capture card eventually, but I'm a little daunted by this stupid HDCP stuff. The main console I'm interested in is the PS3, which seems to be the worst when it comes to this particular ill advised antipiracy measure.
So basically, I'm asking folks how they handle it. Do most folks bypass it by using component video? Splitters? Some other option my googling hasn't discovered?
I'd love to have a single solution for all of my HDMI consoles, but my reading makes this sound less than promising.
Left + Right is usually the one that matters. And yeah, most accurate emulators do restrict it, hence why it's not a problem for most games. Sorry if that was unclear.
Just one wrinkle to keep in mind with the keyboard though, it can allow for button presses that can't normally be done and some communities may ban it. It's not a problem for most games though.
If you're in love with the NES button layout and DPad, 8bitdo's N30 is on par with a DS4 in terms of latency.
I agree with @Komrade though, they're all terrible, and it's mostly the inherant USB latency that's at fault.
While I agree with the sentiment, if the board is inactive or there is no community and the mods don't care, the feature won't be used to any effect.
The end goal is to denote what needs to be fixed right? I think that's what most have a problem with, you're suggesting something that won't fundamentally solve the problem.
Just denoting the fact that there are runs out there isn't enough if the board moderation doesn't care enough to add them.
You could make a case that maybe the mods aren't being effective and may need replacing or need help. It is sort of demoralizing for potential new community members to see boards in obvious disarray. But I have no idea what the Admin staff's position is on that sort of thing.
I recently picked up a copy of the Japanese only Vampire: Darkstalkers Collection, and found a way in the menu to make it arcade perfect.
Holding R1 over game options and pressing select allows access to a secret ROM version menu that contains the major Japanese releases, and a custom "star based" toggle that should allow access to literally all versions of the game you'd want. In my testing, it looks and feels perfectly arcade accurate when set to these modes.
There's reasons why you might not want to play on the PS2 version still though. There is a bit of input lag, maybe a few frames worth, compared to Fightcade and the PS3 with filters turned off, but it's manageable.
I'd like to see it allowed for the arcade category with the caveat that you have to show the game version settings being selected. I'm probably not going to use it because of the drawbacks, but it might get more folks playing the arcade modes, as it's the most widely available release by far, aside from Resurrection. We'd really only be talking about real hardware though. PS2 emulation is still woefully inaccurate as usual.
Here's some video of what I mean:
What do folks think?
I use this one:
RadioShack 1500320 1-Input/4-Output https://www.amazon.com/RadioShack-4-Output-Component-Distribution-Amplifier/dp/B010EIK6K6/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1548337787
It has S-Video and RCA, and you can hook up to 4 other output sources to it. No latency that I can tell. This is a RadioShack brand one, but I'm not sure of the usual availability in stores. I've never seen it at any local Radioshack.
Y THO...
No seriously, what purpose does this serve?
The vast majority of leader boards here are pretty accurate. You're complaining about communities that manage their boards primarily off site. If anything, a banner should show where the real board is over the leaderboard. And in some cases this exists. Time would be better spent getting that done for all of them.
What the hell is a check mark gonna do?
If you see better times, bring them up to the mods of the game in question. Mods can add times to boards even if that user doesn't have an account and doesn't submit them.
Keep in mind that some games have records that are primarily hosted on other sites. The boards here are placeholders or periodically synced.
I'll wait till there's a need for the retime I guess. It doesn't change any of the current standings yet.
As it is now though, I guess last input in on the selection screen is the standard due to @Ciccioimberlicchio 's run. >shrug<
Upload it to Youtube or Twitch, then fill out the submit form on a game's leader board.
Should be fine so long as:
- The submission follows the rules for the game and category in question.
- The video quality is passable enough to be able to tell what's going on.
- The video covers the entire run without interruption.
Having a timer is not a requirement on most (sane) boards. There are a few highly competitive games that require you to stream your attempts, but for a vast majority of games, this should be fine.
As the title says, this is what makes them so easy. I discovered this during some testing on the program menu.
As such, the difficulty is inconsistent with the rest of the games. Should this be raised in the rules?
Not sure what the right call is, on the one hand, the game is kind of a joke at 2, but having to change settings might be difficult for some due to menu lanuage.
Since I'm the only one that has runs up now that @YoJoeGaming is banned, I'm fine with raising this to the level that the rest of the games are on (4) and redoing my runs. I'd volunteer to make a tutorial since I just figured it out anyways.
New game requests take a while. The Mods are very busy, AGDQ was just last week, and Site Administration is down a mod currently. Despite all of that, even in good situations it's normal for these things to take a few weeks to a month or two though.
There's additional issues compared to the Nintendo classic consoles and the Virtual consoles though - even for some games that are on it out of the box, there's significant problems with emulation, and additional problems with game versions/regions.
I'd check with the community you're submitting with before hand. Depending on the specific game, they might count it as an emulator, or a different region, or not allow it at all.
Hey FYI, I corrected some capitalization in the Turbo section and added Turbo 6 as a category as the Darkstalkers Resurrection bundle actually allows Normal and Turbos 1 - 6 on this one, bizarrely enough.
Also, is there any reason why runs of this start on mode select? It seems inconsistent with the rest of the games as all the D3 runs start on character select or last input on the select screen, there's not really a mechanical reason for it, and some of the approved runs don't even start in the right place or have the options select on. Maybe everything should start on last input on the select screen, that way, it supports those who hard code the settings in the program menus.
I'd volunteer to retime what's currently up if we want to change it, but in the grand scheme of things it saves like 1-4 seconds, so it doesn't matter much.
