Download this and then put Vanquish in as your game. It will automatically load the integrated script for automatic splitting and loadless times.
Rules and categories have been updated to reflect current patch + the new DLC: Trials of the Dragon King! Please take some time to read over everything as some wording and placement of rules has changed to accommodate this. If there are any questions, please ask away. None of this is written in stone and we can always revisit changing up something! Other than that, happy running, and we hope you enjoy the new categories!
Hey all, I made a discord for speedrunning the Gungrave series. Figured with G.O.R.E. coming out soon this would be a good way to get everyone together under the same roof! Link below as well as above the leaderboard tabs.
Essentially the inputs are: Back + lock-on + jump + style, and you hold back + lock-on and then mash jump + style.
This technique was pioneered by BYAkuma, and featured pretty heavily in tokoname's runs too. You can find my explanation of it here.
This is 100% real btw. Checked last night and forgot to post about it.
So basically here's what was found:
http://www.psmk2.net/ps2/soft_04/act/gunk.html
This site has a mention of if you pause, hold L2 and R2 and then press up down up down select you should be able to freely switch between speeds in the game. Pressing select after this gets a rotation of normal, slow, very slow, back to normal etc.
I'm going to look at this when I get home in a few hours but provided it's real I 100% think this should not be allowed in the main categories as it is a cheat code. Furthermore, it allows you to kill bosses for no resources in a matter of seconds by doing one or two dodge shoot sequences.
Does anyone have any idea what the slow mode is in UN_oco's run of Grave? I see the word "slow" pop up on the bottom of his screen and he's clearly using it to just shred bosses, but there's no mention of it anywhere. I've looked around in the game and online to see if anyone knows but I'm coming up dry.
I'm working on finishing the game casually, then routing Any%. I'll take care of revamping the board then. Give me a few weeks tops. I'll put an emulator category too.
Wow, very interesting that different game communities came to different conclusions about what versions of their games to allow. I'm sure the people that run those games and don't have to pay for copies of them appreciate that.
Anyway, PS2 emulation is also more questionable overall than SNES emulation. Additionally, emulator is also a harder version of the game unless you are playing JP version because the game was changed to be harder on other versions of PS2 since renting was more popular then. Hardware requirements for this game are extremely lenient too. Emulator is an entirely obsolete version of the game outside of preservation purposes and has not been allowed since the board's conception.
You can put up 10 bucks for it (Switch) or 30 (DMC HDC), or wait for a sale. Or get a friend to gift it to you, whatever works. Happy running.
At this time, we aren't considering additional categories to be made. The game already has enough categories that were demanded by a few people and yet constantly sit empty/inactive. If you do have an itch to scratch in terms of shorter runs, I definitely recommend Bloody Palace runs and the individual boss fight categories (Stages 20, 40, 60, 80, 90, 98, 99, 100, and 101). Prologue is also an option (under miscellaneous full-game).
Pretty self-explanatory. The load remover + autosplitter is finished for PC runs, has been tested, and runs have been verified using it as the main timing method. It is completely integrated into livesplit and fully customizable to your liking in terms of number of splits. Please be sure to also read the rules for PC runs as well, since livesplit will need to be displayed at all times to verify the loadless time, and start time for the run has changed (from confirmation of character choice to now upon gaining control of the character). Happy running!
Hi there, and welcome to the new Nightshade (PS2) leaderboards!
I'm the new mod for Nightshade, nice to meet you! You've probably noticed that the leaderboards have been given a significant facelift in terms of aesthetic, and some changes have happened.
0. Runs actually require verification now Pretty silly that they didn't before, but better late than never. Rules are updated as well to include more clarity. Long story short, this board did not have a mod for 2 years.
1. Individual Levels (ILs) now exist! Funny story, the levels were created, but there were no categories listed. So that's fixed. Enjoy running them!
2. We have a new discord! Since the old discord for Nightshade was not listed here, and not linked anywhere (I had to contact Brandino personally to even get a re-invite to it), I took it upon myself to create a new hub for Shinobi (and Nightshade) speedrunning. Hope to see you there! Link is here (https://discord.gg/R8TZ3EGjGT) and on the sidebar of the leaderboards directly below the "Resources" tab.
3. Emulator runs are still banned I'm totally fine with allowing emulator runs in the future under a separate category (would be split into Console and Emulator subcategories in that case), especially considering this game was never ported to future console generations. But until someone does a run, no point in adding categories for it.
I hope that this overhaul serves as the start for a new spark in Shinobi + Nightshade. Much love and happy running.

1. Full-game is now ranked by RTA. This is the big one. The former "[Character] Any%" and "[Character] Any% Segmented" categories have been merged into what is simply "[Character] Any% Normal". In short, this change was made to allow for runs that have deaths in them to be valid for the boards. My concern, of course, was that tate strats (the room-clearing cinematic that plays when you max out a set of wave kills) would be changed to something runners would not enjoy if the game were to be run RTA. For reference, the tate cutscenes do not count to IGT. I was informed by Brandino, a long-time runner of the game, that despite this difference, strats centering around IGT are faster overall, and switching to RTA would not affect the manner in which the game was ran. So as of now, runs will be timed primarily by RTA, but we will be tracking IGT as well, and runners will be required to show their end-game IGT screen in submission videos.
2. Any% is specifically Any% Normal Any% Normal is specified on these boards for the purpose of preventing runs on Easy difficulty, as that difficulty is not universal to all versions of the game (most notably the US version does not have this). Most interest in general for Shinobi is around the Normal difficulty, so that will be the standard moving forward until there is more interest. I'm more than open to revisiting this and adding more difficulties in the future, too.
3. Individual Levels (ILs) are still ranked by IGT The standard for IL running in Shinobi has always been centered around IGT, utilizing death abuse strats for refilling ninpo and kunai when optimal. Since this is such a long-time tradition, and makes timing + verifying ILs a breeze, this timing method will be retained even after the overhaul.
Updated 7/28/21: added milliseconds to the board to avoid ties.
4. Characters are variables for ILs Basically the idea here is that whatever character is fastest just ends up being the fastest. You can submit runs of every character as well and they'll all show up. If there's enough interest down the line, I'm totally fine with splitting these into subcategories too.
Updated 7/28/21: Characters are now subcategories.

6. Emulator runs are still permitted Along with the current WR (by a long-shot) being done on PS2 emulator, Shinobi is unfortunately not a game that has seen much in the way of preservation to modern consoles. Concerning this, and taking into account the currently low amount of runs on the boards, emulator runs will be allowed, and compared to runs on hardware. Something else we can revisit down the line if need be.
I hope that this overhaul serves as the start for a new spark in Shinobi + Nightshade. Much love and happy running.
WR definitely isn't optimized on Easy, but tbh you could just downpatch.
