Incredible! I honestly didn’t think a sub-5 was possible

Wow; 5:10 by only 3 frames!

Amazing run; you’ve got incredible precision on making short hops

Incredible run; you’re really consistently hitting some of the hardest tricks; when it all lines up, I can certainly imagine it dropping the record by a lot!

Wow! An absolutely flawless World 1

Excellent run! I’m glad you were able to set a new record with the newly implemented “faster” transitions, I was really stressing over whether it would make enough of a difference, but it seems like it does!

Toronto, ON, CanadaBluishGreenPro3 years ago

Well, with the option of rolling this Instant Transition into a feature of Speedrun mode, it doesn’t have to make the run obsolete, and will make routing a little easier because you won’t have to avoid touching certain checkpoints

Well, I could amend the algorithm that converts the total tally of frames into Minutes:Seconds.Milliseconds; I think the only thing that's inaccurate about it right now are the "milliseconds", which could only be interpolated from the frame-count, for example; 7 frames divided into 35 = .2 "milliseconds" Using IGT will never equate to RTA, I can't think of a formula for consistently converting between the two because it depends too much on the PC running the game

The only thing I should clarify in your post, @jakersis, is regarding point #2; that the RTA should not be any different between "fast" / "slow" PCs; it's the internal UNIX time-stamp; responsible for keeping your system clock accurate. Your PC would have to be in pretty rough shape for this not to match up. So; RTA should be consistent across all PCs, but the discrepancy between RTA and IGT will vary depending on your PC; the better it is, the less of a difference there is between them. But it's never going to be perfect; I really need to run the desktop version of the game with a timer, because I anticipate most of the lag is coming from the not-very-fast HTML5 functions which (I imagine) the dedicated desktop version can chew through without lagging.

5-4 is one of the toughest levels in the game; well done!

The latest, crazy fast run by @hahhah42 relies heavily on the Instant Level Transition bug, which works by touching an already active checkpoint while holding down the "exit level" button (shift) while carrying an leaf you have never collected before. I just patched this out in v1.2.0d (published a couple minutes ago). Obviously this bug doesn't work on every level; but it does work on a lot. So here's the question; rather than patch this out; should "Speedrun Mode" allow this to work on any checkpoint? And while I'm at it; should it be just leaving levels, or entering them too? I sort of like the brief pause between levels, but I'd like to hear what everyone's preferences are.

So now that a few runs have come out with the Preview builds with significant variability between the IGT vs RTA, let me try to explain a bit better what's going on, and why I am hesitant to make the switch; IGT is a recording of frames; the game runs at 35 frames per second, and if it lags, no frame is counted, so that's a true measure of how many frames elapsed; this is why it drifts from RTA. RTA uses GameMaker's current_time, which should look at your actual CPU clock, and therefore does NOT account for lag; theoretically, it should line up with an external timing program. That said; if your PC runs slower, you'll have an "easier" time setting an IGT record, but a harder time setting an RTA record. This is why it's tricky to make the switch, I either end up favoring people with faster / slower PCs. Is this worth creating separate Leaderboards for IGT vs RTA? Thoughts? Suggestions?

Well, I certainly can add this as an in-game feature, the main reason I didn’t was because of how easy it is to edit the save file, so we just have to be aware that we can’t trust a screenshot of the end screen without a video to verify the IL times

Toronto, ON, CanadaBluishGreenPro3 years ago

@hahhah42 Regarding the "sum of best tracker for IL times", what exactly do you mean? Is this a functionality of SRC, or is it something I would implement in the game itself?

Toronto, ON, CanadaBluishGreenPro3 years ago

Right now, you need all 15 leaves from every level to advance to the next world; would people be interested in running Any% versions of the game where you only need to collect 10 leaves per world, or in the extreme case; only 1 leaf per level? @hahhah42 I'm not sure about the aspect of this that involves completing the game, I can't seem to replicate that on my end. Though I can say that this is intentional behaviour, but I understand why it is confusing. You can enable the Timer without being in Speedrun Mode. The Timer will measure your overall game time as if it were in Speedrun mode because Speedrun mode only disables the 1-1 fire and shows personal best times above levels. To clear up the confusion, I can probably make it so that the Timer is only visible if Speedrun or IL mode is active

I agree that we should use real time over IGT, but I wanted to show both until everyone has made a run and set a real-time record, then we can transition over more smoothly

Toronto, ON, CanadaBluishGreenPro3 years ago

Nice run! Going to be tough to get a better time than that

Toronto, ON, CanadaBluishGreenPro3 years ago

So far, here are ideas for extra game modes I’ve had;

  • Shuffle: Every level, back to back, but the order has been shuffled
  • Backwards: Start at the end of each level (not the usual spawner) and work your way backwards

In v1.2, I'm going to add a mode that displays IL times above each level in the overworld, so it will be much easier to get IL runs going
