The "problem" with USB2 composite/svideo capture devices is that those interpret the signal as 480i no matter what. What that does with 240p is a lot of combing artifacts, and the framerate is only seen as 30fps at most. What AmarecTV does is effectively deinterlace in a way that fixes the device's combing artifacts, and restores a 60 fps framerate.
General rule of thumb for AmarecTV:
- 240p content via svideo (passed thru an interface that sees it as 480i, such as a Dazzle, or a GV-USB2) should be deinterlaced via "Retro game" setting
- Actual 480i content (or arguably 240p content via composite) should be deinterlaced via "Role-playing game" setting
@MasterLeoBlue While I do agree that most RPGs in their vanilla form have elements that slow the pace of a run, randomizers usually do a great job in cutting off those parts, and can lead to exciting runs, especially in terms of races.
The prime example that comes to mind is Final Fantasy 4's Free Enterprise randomizer. Cuts the BS thoughout the game and goes straight to the action.
Aside from retrogaming, I usually like doing tech-related stuff that I will use throughout my career in IT, such as implementing enterprise-grade tech on my home network and fiddle around with it. I also like messing around with audio/video production/editing and minor console modding.
Outside of tech, I'm not as active as I used to be, I'll admit that much. Used to volunteer as a stage tech for an indy pro-wrestling fed. Also took pro-wrestling classes at around that time, but left that behind as I found the indy wrestlers community to be a petty bunch for the most part, and figured this was a stress I didn't need in my life.
Any visual novel games, such as the Phoenix Wright games. It's merely a matter of knowing all the answers by heart and optimal input, but doesn't translate to anything spectacular on-screen.
Well you could get a 30$ (or even less) USB2 composite/svideo capture adapter and use it alongside AmarecTV (it'll deinterlace the 30fps feed and bring it back to 60 fps) and OBS (32-bit so it can see the AmarecTV virtual device), That would easily yield 60fps footage of your NES.
People usually praise the GV-USB2 adapter as it's the "bang for your buck" option, but really, any USB2 composite/svideo adapter that is supported on your version of Windows should work with AmarecTV.
In this day and age, there shouldn't be any excuse not to have video evidence.
For emulators, you have OBS which can record specific apps or your entire screen setup. For consoles, you have a plethora of capture cards available at various price points. And if that won't do for whatever reason, everyone and their pets nowadays have a smartphone they can use to record the screen.
And as for timing, most mods will be happy to properly time your run if, for some reason, you can't use one of the various solutions available to time your runs.
The way I see it, there is no excuse not to provide video evidence.
The way I see the main difference between "Main" and "Misc" categories go as follows.
Main categories: intended play modes designed within the game (ie: different difficulty settings, different game modes). Misc categories: whenever arbitrary rules that are not enforced by the game's design (ie: playing with one specific character only, or without using specific items/abilities, meme runs) are applied.
Of course, certain games are managed differently, but in this case, I can certainly see these apply. So those should be misc'd all the way.
By the way, I notified DAIKON of this thread, so he can come and weigh in on the whole situation.
@CLChambers00 While most games generally require a full reset, it is not always the case. We certainly didn't specify that in the beginning, but we didn't have any reason to either. Most of the time, it is to prevent potential RNG manipulation, but in this case, the RNG goes so wildly out of place that it would be virtually impossible to successfully and consistently manipulate it, even through a save state.
However, that is only my opinion on the matter. Since we didn't explicitly require that, and since there is no manips done from that save state, I allowed it. Now if going forward, this is something we want to require, I won't oppose that either, as I personally go for full resets by default (yep, even on games like Pinbot in which it is annoying as all hell) just to be safe.
Now in this specific case, since the RNG can't, based on my observations and knowledge of the game, be humanly manipulated from that potential save state, would the best course of action really be to invalidate all of DAIKON's runs based on this unwritten rule? I personally think not. All we'd do is turn a good runner away.
Plus... we haven't even asked DAIKON. Has anyone reached out to him yet? It would be quite the dick move to wipe his runs without hearing from the guy, and presenting our concerns to him.
@buffalax: An Everdrive does indeed allow for save states to be loaded, in their own proprietary format. Those states are not compatible with any other emulators. So tampering would require knowledge on the format of those state, which, as far as I know, only Krizz (the guy who builds those Everdrives) has.
Hello,
If I may suggest, it would be nice having "Time trial mode" categories. Basically, there are three stage groups (ie: Big Apple 3AM, Alleycat Blues, and Prehistoric Turtlesaurus), each containing 6 short fight sequences you have to clear as fast as possible with only one life. Strats would most likely gravitate towards efficiently clearing mob packs while taking as little damage as possible. There is an in-game timer for that mode, so that could be used as well as the main timing method.
I, for one, most certainly will be running those. If anyone else would be down for that, please respond. Thanks!
[EDIT: From what I could observe, the Time trial mode seems to have its own single difficulty setting, as nothing changes when switching difficulty in options.]
Darn. Already sent a run with the trick months ago. :p Took a chance there.
I'll say that a category for it would be interesting as it could alter/optimize routes in that respect. Much like, say, the ghost-glitch runs in NES DW3, but much less impactful.
Hello,
I was wondering if a jailbroken PS3, which can play PSP games, would be allowed. I do not know yet for sure if it has an impact on load times, but I suspect it does. Based on that, I thought I'd ask beforehand.
Thanks!
I also rectified a bit of info on the original post. Defense doesn't scale the same way it normally does on the shadow match. So keeping John and Mike actually is the best strat, as they have the least amount of HP. John's defense will be insignificant in the grand scheme of things.
This brings a few questions: what would the consensus be on the starting stats and gear? How can you prove that your savefile comes from a legitimately finished game as opposed to having it heavily edited? This is not a problem when your entire footage shows your game from start to finish, but when you start from a very specific point in the game, I can see the legitimacy of a given savefile being difficult to prove.
I have added a 200,000 points category to the leaderboard. This would require much different strats, especially when it comes to kill management with the "bowling balls". Also, warping to the "basement" (as I like to call it) could potentially be a better route as a result.
There have been mentions of a 2-loop category, but I would have to know if there is anything that would set a potential 2-loop category apart from the 1-loop category, or if it would be "more of the same" with increased artificial AI as with several arcade games of the 80's. I haven't explored that personally, so if anyone has feedback on that matter, please let me know. :)
That would seem to be the wisest thing to do, then. I will inquire with them. Thanks.
I'd definitely agree with you, CriscoWild. Thing is, which one of the current boards would be willing to let the other take over? Not sure either board's mod team will be pleased by that.
