I think the biggest problem with DW5 speedruns is that there isn't a clear "Any%" category where you just race to beat the game. My big gripe is that individual stories don't have a ton of depth to them, but combining stories still means you have to decide between Wei/Wu/Shu/Other. Basically, It'd be nice if we had a strong front-page run but the game doesn't have it
I do also agree that Chang Ban is the worst stage in this game for speedruns. You are basically stuck waiting for Cao Cao and it can be an inconsistent stage at a lot of points. Same for Escape from Chi Bi. Shu in general has the worst speedruns I'd say.
Ling Tong is my favorite character, but for free play I think Ma Chao is the obvious first choice.
im gonna fill the leaderboard anyways. so every run is completed.
would also be cool if we added . a any% no horses/ items. like low %
and like you said any % all kingdomes would be cool.
the dynasty warriors 5 extreme legends board is also empty just 1 run . i love those extra modes , legends, destiny , extreme . maybe they could be added in to the future here. as misc categories. but i dont know maybe people think it dont fit the dw5 board.
its fun to play this game again!
Ya I agree, there's really no "main leaderboard" but i would say the unlock all chracters% on easy is the one that feels like it would be like "main leaderboard" since it's not NG+. If the others weren't I think it would be closer.
it's tough there's not a lot of runners and everyone likes different parts of the game. I like starting from scratch, so the NG+ runs don't speak as much to me.
I will be doing the first full attempts on Sunday. I did a practice one for routing. Idk if I'll be able to complete a full run on Sunday but Imma try. Hard is super unforgiving. We get only one shot to do each OOB, with some basically necessitating a level reset. We've got many places where P1 can easily die. And the beginning of the run is really risky. Lots of red-bar needed to keep pace. You basically need redbar to even get hex harness.
There are also just straight more OOBs that I routed in that aren't worth it on easy, but purely to keep the inactive player safe. There's some stuff I'd like to optimize more. I don't know where all the rages are guaranteed on Hard and if there's optimal places to use BGs early or where all the best item pickups are. Stuff I'll have to test on freemode, but I think we're good to make our first real attempt.
Also the worst battle for unlock all characters hard mode is Cao Pi's WuZhang Plains fight, hands down.
adding a any % ng as default would be interesting cause then you cannot choose all unlockable characters i wonder what people would pick.
would be fun to see you do some individual campaigns though. i never equip horses on my ng+ speedruns i often snatch them from officers. and some characters are so fast anyways so you dont need the horse. you only need the horse if youre gonna do crazy times. like under 7 mins
It'd be nice if someone made a guide for the OOB glitches (and not only because I don't really even know how to do it). Would solve a minor barrier for beginners.
Favourite character overall would be difficult for me to pick tbh.
From each faction would be smth like this: Shu - Wey Yan i always liked his break dance C3 (mini Lu Bu); Wei - Xiahou Dun long time favourite; Wu - Zhou Tai hands down; Others - Zhu Rong "Burn Baby Burn"
Regarding OOB, i can do a short video on it. It looked (was) harder when i tried the 1st times but i figured later on that u can 'force' the horse into the checkpoint by moving back and forth parallel to the invisible wall while having guard pressed then start running into it doing a small curve. An easy way to know if u got it is imagining a vertical line on the back of the saddle, if it alligns or passes the wooden post u got it.
oh, you can guard to set it up easier? That would be really nice. I was just continuing to run into the post from the side parallel to the wall and then turning into it. If I am facing the barrier and the no horse icon didn't appear yet, I assumed I got it. But I don't know what mechanism is at play at all, so I could be totally wrong on how it works. A video explaining it would be really nice.
Oh and on the topic of 2p and NG+, I was looking and while as a rule, it would be faster to play 1p mode as the intended character, there may still be some individual levels faster on 2p mode if you got really really really good at controlling two controllers. Specifically when you're doing levels where the commander has to trigger events or when there are two objectives on opposite sides of the map.
Another thing NG+ routers might want to look at is starting positions of p2. In NG+ easy, the inactive player will never really be in danger, so there might be some instances where a 2p is in such a significantly better position than p1 that it is worth the extra menus. I imagine this is extremely rare though, it takes a while to add and remove 2p, so you'd need a pretty massive benefit.
For NG anthology, I can see 2p actually being more viable, even on easy, but especially on hard. But I think on NG+ it will only ever be specific levels 2p mode is actually good on.
Not sure if i'm allowed to post it in this thread but hope this helps.
NOTE: I forgot to add, have your guard pressed all time while attempting the trick so the horse doesn't change directions, release it once you're ready to change direction. The trick can be performed from either left side or right side of the horse.
The Unlock All Characters Easy WR has the fast version of OOB they use in some instances as well.
I also had some OOB examples on my YT as well but just never posted them. Toru, you good if I dump that in resources since yours is more detailed and you actually explain what you are doing in your video?
Oh ya, I realized Battle of Chang Ban (Shu) has some time built in for bathroom breaks. Enough so, I am considering doing Liu Bei after Sun Jian just to spread out the time.
Is there any specific reason we do Liu Bei right after Zhuge Liang?
Also on the topic of Chang Ban, is liu bei themselves required to get to certain areas to trigger events? Is it trigger off of Zhao Yun making it to certain areas? Or is just total rng? like how does that battle work, exactly?
depends on the character you are at chang ban . feels like liu bei s ai react differntly depending what character you are . that battle is so complex . sometimes some reinforcements dont trigger fast etc . guan ping is the slowest for sure on chang ban there is a 75% fire fail attack if you are guan ping
I see, so in my case - it's Zhuge Liang (w/ Ma Chao) and then again with Liu Bei (w/ Ma Chao). I guess it would be good to know w/ Huang Zhong as well as that's the next viable 2p to main.
So I guess I meant more like, if I just leave Liu Bei where he is, will Cao Cao never show up? Or does Liu Bei have to get to a certain point on the map to set a flag? In the easy version of the category, bibi use LiuBei to just go around the map killing people and its not clear what's being triggered. Like I'm wondering if Liu Bei is the trigger for Guan Yu arrival and that starts the countdown to Cao Cao? Or is it Zhao Yun talking to Liu Bei? Or maybe it's just timers based on killing a specific officer?
hmmm i found a list of some of the conditional events. I wonder if this is somehow related. Like if the level logic is scripted to intentionally give players a chance to activate certain events, even though events are turned off. It could be worth testing if getting the conditions of these events on purpose makes the level happen faster...

Specific to the discussion might be the fire attack, Zhuge Liang and Liu Bei's conversation near Guan Yu after he arrives, Guan Ping also appears to have an optional event that can trigger with Liu Bei.
The guide doesn't say what exactly is trigger Cao Cao's arrival. It could be anything. But it's definitely not immediately after Liu Bei reaches a certain point. I had assumed it was a timer after killing Liu Qi or a timer after Liu Bei reaches a certain spot on the map, but I'm not certain what it is yet.
when liu bei reach 80 % of the escape cao cao will appear and he will start move when the pessants starts to escape . i dont think zhao yun matters. could be wrong though. but if you fuck up the fire attack more and more enemies will come. and on hard i think its even more enemies and harder. more rng. if all allies dies liu bei will stand alone and fight. maybe its a easter egg for that he cares about the people or something . cao cao will show up eventualy though
i actually need to test normal and hard differences on chang ban . i think its different. taking the bases in the begining is important though for the enemy reinforcement to show up
