Hello,
Just looking for some rules clarification - what emulators/settings are approved?
Is normal turbo allowed for all categories?
Is OOBs also allowed on Unlock all characters category? Or is this an intended exception?
Are all categories single player only? I can think of a number of places where 2 players might improve time.
i use the PCXS2 , i know that xenia is kinda unstable the 360 emulator . the pc version is kinda hard to find its not on steam anymore and i think you need the old school pc dvd box . ( ninja blade and onimusha 3 has also been taken down)
then there is also the dynasty warriors 5 extreme legends game if you have the dw5 disc you can port all dynasty 5 characters it has the orginal dw5 campaign and also added a novice difficulty.
i would recomend ps2 and xbox emulator
i think OOB is alowed for all categories there is no glitchless category that im aware of .
i havent used turbo in my runs. is it a in game feature? i have a lot of hours in this game around 600 hours i think.
Turbo is a feature of console controllers in general - popular in PS1 games, but less popular in PC games. Probably mostly useful on hard mode as a time loss mitigation. Breaks clashes consistently and first frame recoveries and stuff. Tiny menu stuff. I'd use it if its legal, but i don't really care too much.
Regarding OOB and 2-player mode. Have we considered having OOB and 2-player enabled in one category and a glitchless/single-player mode in the other for the Anthology and Unlock all characters categories? I think individual mosou modes don't really make sense to do that as it ruins the spirit of playing those characters.
i'm looking into routing out 2 player, OOB hard unlock all character route. Seems fun, but it's not a category.
As I understand it, turbo is not allowed and no one has (openly) used it ever in a run. OOBs have been allowed in the past. I also use PCSX2 for emulation, but obviously no speeding up the game play or anything like that.
As for two-player and glitch-less categories, I'm sure no one is opposed to it. The problem is that this isn't a popular speedrunning game so we don't have that many runs on the main page, let alone category extensions.
DW5XL is a separate game, as it is or should be in every Koei game. Again, the problem is we don't have many runners so the rules haven't been that fleshed out.
OOBs are fine on any category unless stated other wise. I'm pretty sure the WR holder for Unlock Characters% uses OOBs throughout the run.
I've always used PCSX2 when it comes to emulation. I have no experience with using any other PS2 emulators.
As for 2 player, that sounds cool, go for it. I will not be making separate categories for it though, you can just submit those to the main boards where they would apply. This board is already littered with to many categories because that's just kinda how the game is. Although there are some benefits to 2 player, you may also end up losing time due to additional post map menus. I can't think of much routing that would benefit from 2 player as most maps are "Rush the commander" or "OOB to avoid objectives" or "Wait until Cao Cao spawns at Chang Ban".
If people have been using Turbo, I haven't even noticed to be honest. I can't think of much that would benefit you there either. I've just been making sure people haven't been using PNACH codes or any saves that have used them.
awesome! I will keep looking into it. I definitely agree it does not seem to make sense for any easy or normal mode (4th weapons only unlockable on hard). So it's not like most of the runs currently on leaderboard would be affected. It would be legitimately interesting if the route looks different for hard mode and easy mode because of the increased damage needed, but we'll have to do some testing.
So far I've mostly just been narrowing down candidates. Right now it's between Huang Zhong, Ma Chao, and Taishi Chi. I think a lot will come down to where they appear on the maps.
2 gan nings can roam across the full map fast if you have musou all the time. i think gan ning is the fastest character in the game but his campaign is not fast. doing gan ning on the dong zhou campaign would be insanely fast. he might be good for hard
Dong zhao is the fastest campaign.
also pang tong and ma chao has fast movements in air.
im both keyboard and controller player . i dont mind turbo controller i mostley use ps4 and xbox 360 controllers
i dont have a turbo controller , i remember i used to have one though
Sounds cool with co-op wanna see runs
but i mainly use Keyboard only for this game , mostley for more control
heres my control set up for my keyboard
forward w
backward s
left A
right D
aim E
light attack J
strong attack I
jump K
musou L
rage mode 2 + 4
deflect Q
I was actually thinking about Gan Ning! I realized jar drops are different for hard vs easy when I was looking at routings yesterday. Hard mode has way less rages. Didn't look to see if mosou refills drop less, but it didn't seem like it, so that could have some viability still. Obviously for unlock all characters, gan ning way too late to use.
With 2 player controller, thing I am working on now is a consistent way to keep player 1 from getting hit and killed. Turboing direction pad could weirdly keep them moving and harder to hit. but i haven't tested to see if it works yet.
I have officially dropped Taishi Chi from consideration btw, Huang Zhong and Ma Chao seem viable for different reasons though so far. Haven't finished routing yet.
Big thing I realized while routing for unlock all hard already is how important staying in the red is. You want to be red as much as humanly possible. True Mosou and the overtime fill is just way too important on hard so far. It's borderline impossible to get a good time on the huang zhong split without red-barring, even just beating what's his name fast enough for hex is tough. I have been considering picking up the Way of Mosou on S2 Huang Zhong, it seems to be that important (which i believe you unlock naturally with same 4th weapon conditions?). Or bringing 2p or bodyguard with me to true mosou off of, but the former seems riskier than just being red and neither give auto refilling.
Also, you only get on shot on OOB attempts. soooooo ya there's that. Better nail it lmao
way later edit: After routing, I have determined Rage's are largely the same. However in 2-player mode and hard mode both effect which rages to go for. Also I have figured out turboing direction does not work (at least on my turbo controller).
I play on controller, although I guess if I did co-op I'd use a keyboard as the secondary.
bout halfway through routing woohoo! Guan Yu escape is interesting - I'm actually going to use OOB to keep Guan Yu safe while I actually protect carriage with Ma Chao. Otherwise Xiahou Dun just ENDS you. It's too bad you have to protect the carriage, cause how funny would it be to just escape off the map lmao.
Turns out turbo direction pads don't work (at least on my controllers) - a decent part of routing is just figuring out which places p1 is in danger.
Also this run is probably going to be ~6-6.5 hours at the pace I'm looking at. Can I pause the timer once for 5 minutes to go pee on the main menu so long as it's still all recorded in one segment? There's no mandatory cutscenes in this game and no long dialogue to turbo through. It's pretty much all gas from the moment go.
I'm not going to pretend this is a highly competitive board, I'd prefer you do what is healthy for you. You can either pause livesplit or notate/announce when you are stopping for a break during the run. Just to make things easy on me, just notate the timestamps of a break when submitting a run. And if for whatever reason livesplit doesn't get stopped or something breaks I can just make a guestimated calculation and deduct seconds if needed for safety.
I personally am fine with allowing pauses, although typically the timer runs for any break in most speedruns. I get that this isn't a popular game, but best practice would probably be to disallow pausing the timer. Ultimately though it doesn't really matter.
Here's what I'll do then. I'll keep timer running and i'll submit time with the pause like the whole time. But I'm just personally going to be going to reduce the time with the pause removed. I'll be unopposed on this category for a bit and if someone wants to run and they can do it without peeing, they want it more than me lmao.
btw equiping the speed scroll can make you 10 % faster . if you have the speed 20 scroll . and you can combine the speed 20 scroll with weapon buffs for instance if a weapon have 15 speed attribute you can get +35 speed. then theres the battlefield speedscroll if you have +35 speed with the battlefield speed it might give you +40 speed. kinda insane mechanics. i found a weapon with lu xun that had 17 attack and 15 speed and its also a light weapon.
U guys might want to dwell into ITT weapons for min maxing stats
Edit: Nvm, if it's for the unlock all characters this is probb irrelevant as u start from scratch
Toru whats your favorite speed character in dw5? and what would your co-op pick be for a full game?
i would pick ling tong and pang tong might consider cao ren cause of his shooting abbility . but zhou tai is my favorite dynasty warriors character of all time. such a badass character.
but yeah not everything is unlocked at freshfile
i wanna try the dongrout any % 4 stages with cao ren would be intresting. even with gan ning that would be intresting/fast
dong zhao campaign seems to be the fastest one if you look at map progression.
Speed as in movement speed or the fastest campaign?
Ling Tong has fast base speed iirc but with Red Hare equipped wouldn't really make a difference and for the unlock all characters route i would probb prioritize getting it asap but the conditions might be difficult with unleveled characters. Ppl already mention Gan Ning has u can fly across the map with his musou, so u could equip +musou/fill/speed item and/or potentialy find a path where u get the 10sec musou or refill either from soldiers/items.
Dong Zhuo is deff the fastest campaign, on the 1st stage you can skip the log blocking the bridge with some characters charge+jump attack like Pang Tong or not sure if it would be possible with guard back flip (i think it is?), also cant remember if u can OOB directly into enemy main camp but might not be worth with how small that stage is.
chang ban . battle is the most annoying map in the game. dear lord you have to wait for cao cao for like 5 minutes sometimes 7 minutes depending on rng .
looking forward to umihimes run. nobody has done all characters unlock on hard.
yeah so pang tong gan ning, sima yi, lu xun , cao ren , ma chao is the best characters with some exceptions with maybe lu bu , xuan yuan . it could also be aplayer reference what your comfortable with and if youre on keyboard or controller.
sun jian is the best character for the lords ( caocao sun jian liu bei)
but cao rens shooting attack would shred all officers if they were put together in an arena. with buffs etc
after playing the game a lot now i honestly feel that lu xun is the best if you dont use a horse.
difficulty can also give a different impact on the characters.
i was more thinking of your favorite character overall
this game dark souls 2 and devil may cry 1 and 3 and wo long are my favorite speedrun games of all time. dw5 has everything you want in a speedrun game. great items , characters, weapons , speed buffs and its not that lenghty iether. the lenght of a game matters. the longer the run the more mistakes. but in shorter games you reset way more also, no room for mistakes at all.
it should be way more popular . maybe if they re released this game it would get more players. but the onimusha games are also not popular and they are really good speedrun games.
