Why on earth am I talking about a timing line? Well so there'll be no spawn bias, and having a good spawn won't be an advantage. I currently can't think of any issues with it so if you know one with this, please tell me.
You will hardly ever see me make polls because most the time people vote for whatever they think can get them a free wr, but since if everything goes well with this and everyone likes it I'll simply retime every run. Also here's the link to the poll, http://www.strawpoll.me/11392808
A timing line would be very beneficial, particularly because spawns are super unfair (especially in your case-tt), but there would be a lot of problems. Firstly, this would make people want back spawn, because they would get more momentum (particularly on fr where you get more momentum from the ice). Another thing is this "timing line" would be very subjective, because of things like FOV, so you wouldn't be able to time it PERFECTLY. Also, if the person is mid-air while he/she crosses the "timing line", it may also be unfair (not too sure how, maybe momentum-wise or something idk), and it would be harder to time accurately. YE
Honestly, I feel that the timing line would only work for certain maps like tt. You see, another problem is that for maps like through hell, it's gonna be unfair. If you get left spawn on through hell, you do the first leap differently, which means the timing line would have to be much farther down. Also, different spawns allow you to do a faster first leap, which gives you more momentum based on your spawn. Ye Also, for a map like lc, there are different starting routes for different spawns Actually that's probably all maps :l Only itj and tt would work in that case, unfortunately. There has to be a different alternative, idk, maybe mods could take away the time wasted by spawns manually?
I like this idea. It makes the game more fun to speedrun and less luck-based if there would be a timing line added. Spawns don't require any skill to get a "Daddy Spawn"
Also to add one more thing: all runs would have to be retimed with the new system. I think we should give it a shot. After all, if it doesn't work out very well we can always switch back to the old system.
I agree with all the arguments against it that have been presented. Good job guys Kappa b
Thank you quantum for your amazing contribution.
Honestly, I would suggest something more like allow spawn walking (walking to perfect spawn after game starts) or something. idk
Well, that's kind of the same thing as the timing line because you can walk around behind the line to the spot. :) The only flaw I can see with this idea is those who will attempt to start their timer late and say they didn't know where the line was or something along those lines. So we should put this 'line' in a very definable spot. Other than that I would say this is a superb idea, and it should be applied ASAP.
I don't think a "definable spot" can exist unless you force the player to look down and align on an edge or smth.
Well let's think about the definable spots
Skylands: Hedge of leaves Through Hell: Quartz Pillars on spawn platform Pirate Bay: First set of stairs after spawn Frost Run: First Row of slabs after spawn Into the Jungle: first block of the second platform Time Travel: Block in line with blue glass panes (not 100% sure about this one) L0tus Crescent: Hard to determine because the glass blocks arent alogned
Also tac Flare and I suggested to Maxi about the moving to the certain spawn but Maxi said he'd prefer to have a timing line system so ye
Those aren't "definitive". Almost all of them involve a block, which can be interpreted as "when you touch the block", "when you're in the middle of the block", or "when you jump off of the block", and that WILL fluctuate. That is the problem with this idea. It can not be definitive unless you make people stand in an exact coord and start a run there.
Also, why do you suggest we start runs later for the sake of less spawn bias? That sounds ridiculous considering that you ignoring a part of the run just so it's "fair" (I'm talking specifically for something such as Skylands and Lotus Crescent because you can fuck up the beginning, same goes for Frost Run).
The original idea was to allow spawn movement which wouldn't affect the time but Max denied that :l
This is a stupid idea :l
Also, looking at the strawpoll, I feel like "Let's try it out first" and "Yes" are basically saying the same thing just with a varying level of confidence in the opinion. If this is put in at all with this middle option, I'm sure people are gonna be like "Nah I see nothing wrong with this" and make it stay as if they chose "Yes"
What if... Runners were forced to start their runs in F3 mode! The first frame in which the player's X or Zed coordinate passes a certain number (the "timing line"), the timer could start. Also, so far, this idea would not have any major flaws, except for having a negative effect on Dragon Escape content that is released on YouTube. Also, the directions that Dragon Escape spawns face are not (yet) diagonal. Even if they were diagonal, that might not be a big problem. What do y'all think?
