Thanks to the battery plans cutscene (see part 7), Laverne can make it to the present! Now we can have a bit of fun thanks to Hancock and Jefferson, similar to how we did the hamster skip in part 2.
Getting the contract
Get Laverne to Dr. Fred's office when Dr. Fred isn't there. Now, with Hoagie, talk to Hancock until there are only two options left. Press "3" to switch to Laverne, and finish the conversation. The safe will open, and you'll be able to get the contract.
Signing the contract
For this trick to work, Bernard needs to be in the present basement, and Dr. Fred can't be there.
Get Laverne to the basement. Now, with Hoagie, talk to Jefferson until there are only two options left. Press "3" to switch to Laverne, and finish the conversation. Bernard will start the conversation with Dr. Fred about signing the contract, just like he did thanks to the gum glich in part 6.
What if Bernard isn't in the present, though? How do we get him there? Well, for that, we can exit the kitchen with Laverne.
Summoning Bernard
Get Laverne to the kitchen. Get the decaf, unless Bernard's already got it. Now go to the living room.
Surprisingly enough, Bernard will make it to the living room, even if he's in a different era. Click on the door on the left to get Laverne to the lobby. Then you can get both of them to the basement and sign the contract.
Putting it all together
You can see all these three glitches combined in the Laverne in the present video.
Under the hood: summoning characters back to their era
Sometimes, when you enter a room, the game puts a specific character in that room. For instance, when you go up the chimney in the past, Hoagie makes it to the roof, no matter who entered the chimney. The same thing happens in the future: when you go up the chimney, Laverne makes it to the roof, no matter who entered the chimney.
And that's what happens when you leave the kitchen in the present in order to get to the living room. When you do this, Bernard makes it to the living room, but Laverne stays in the kitchen. You're still controlling Laverne, so, as mentioned in part 3, you can click on the door and immediately make it to the lobby.
The rest of what's going on here isn't really new. When you talk to Hancock and switch to Laverne, the game runs room script 200 and room script 201. Just like we did with the canary conversation in part 2, this opens the safe, so you can get the contract.
Similarly, talking to Jefferson and switching to Laverne in the basement runs script 202, which starts room script 202. This is the same thing we mentioned in part 6, only that, for some reason, Bernard needs to be in the basement too.
