Just wondering what kind of mods, if any, are allowed for runs involving vanilla Doom 3 |

Hey Mucus.Middleton, there currently is no seperate category for Vanilla Doom3. The discussion has been brought up to create a Vanilla Doom3 category, but nobody did runs to showcase such a run yet and the interest seems to be small. If you want to do a run and show it for further discussion, feel free to do so. I don't think any additional mods should be allowed. What mods did you have in mind anyway? Greetings |

I was thinking of graphical/texture mods that don't interfere with the actual content of the game could be allowed, since the game does look pretty dated by today's standards. I know mods like Sikkmod wouldn't pass (due to the fact that sikkmod allows you to modify certain in-game properties, which is basically cheating), but there are some lighting and texture packs I would like to use if I were to do a run. |

And using brigher lightning and textures is not cheating? Even if graphic mods don't change the gameplay at all, you still can get advantage by seeing better, better reference points for difficult tricks, possibly better framerate, etc. |

I'm not sure this shouldn't be legit. In other games it is normal to change graphic settings and set the game to fullbright for example. I'd like to see it to know what you mean so we can talk about it further. |

He said he wants to use a mod, not change in-game graphics settings. |

As long as it is just the change of graphics and not the change of content as Mucus said, I wouldn't just yet disallow it. I'd like to see what he's talking about and we can decide then. Also I don't consider the change of graphics settings a huge impact on the game. It has been normal in other games as well to change graphics settings for runs or for multiplayer as well. This however is a disputed topic and different communities have different opinions about it. |

I think you misunderstand my point of view. I have nothing against changing graphics settings via in-game options, console or launchers, as long as it's done using the officially released version. The problem are 3rd party mods, which may change how the speedrun is played, therefore pretty much every community do not allow them, and if they do, shame on them. Even if you allow mods that just enhance the graphics, its author may release a new version in future that can give you advantage in a speedrun. Visual mods may look harmless, but there are games where speedrunners use textures/objects to do a setup for a precise trick. I'm not saying D3 is one of those games, but who knows. |

I see what you mean. If people do suddenly decide to run vanilla D3 and start using some 3rd party mods, some of which do indeed unlock frame rates (sikkmod) or allow players to see 'better' in certain scenarios, that would give a really unfair advantage. If I do a run on vanilla D3, I won't use any mods. |
