II.Game Description

To Al's Toy Barn - And Beyond! Buzz Lightyear sets out on a wild adventure to save Woody from the clutches of an obsessive toy collector, then he must race home before Andy returns from Coyboy Camp. Along the way he gets "help" from Hamm, Rex, Bullseye the Horse and other Toy Story 2 characters. There are 9 levels in the game, and 2 bonus stages. Each level contains 30 coins, and on the bonus stages 18 coins can be obtained. On each of the 9 playable stages once you have collected all thirty coins and completed the stage you will receive a buzz lightyear ticket. Inorder to 100% the game a buzz lightyear ticket must be aquired on every stage. There are three difficulties that can be accessed in the options section of the main menu, before you start the game. Each difficulty makes changes to how you beat specific levels throughout the game. I'll go further into these changes in the walkthrough section. In the options menu you can also toggle the music, sound effects, and number of lives you start the game with. The other options on the main menu are "Start Game", which will send you through the opening cutscene and into level 1; "Password" which allows you to enter paswords that are given to you after the completion of a level. These passwords will send you to a specified level. This takes the place of a save system; and "Credits" which I go over the Game Credits section. The controls for this game are painful to say the least. Both running and jumping are mapped to the B button so it is impossible to jump while walking. Instead you can either stop... jump... and manuver in the air, or you can do a running leap. This is most peoples primary complaint with the game, and is enough to scare away most new-commers. As you play the game your health will drop steadily. This acts as a timer, and keeps the player from loitering for to long. Depending on your selected difficulty your health will drop at a different rate. This is barely noticable on easy, and for a long time I beleived that I was just randomly taking damage. On hard mode the health drop becomes almost unfair, and gives you no time to explore the later levels. Here is roughly the time it takes for you to take a hit of damage on each difficulty... (difficulty=minutes:seconds) Easy= 2:30 Medium= 1:00 Hard= 0:30 You can take four hits of damge, so here is roughly the total times you can spend loitering in a level... Easy= 10:00 Medium= 4:00 Hard= 2:00 You can restore your health with batteries that are scattered throughout most levels. If you're having trouble this will allow you to explore longer. For more information checkout section VI: Misc. Trivia. I think it's about time I started writing the meat of this guide...

III. Walkthrough

Level 1 Opening Text: " Woody has fallen out of the window! Race to save him..."

This is by far the easiest level in the game. In both easy and medium all you have to do is get to the window at the end of the level. When the difficulty is set to hard you must collect all 30 coins before you can complete the stage. That is still very easy as most of the coins can be collected through playing the level normally. If you want to get through the level quickly you can climb onto the bed at the start of the stage. Once there climb onto the right bed post. Then just hit the B button. This will start a sequence where-in Buzz recreates the famous "falling with style" scene from the start of Toy Story 2. Buzz will jump from the post, and then you have to hit B again to bounce off of a ball onto the top of a shelf. Quickly run to the right, and Buzz will begin skating on a toy car. From here mash the hell out of the B button and he will fly to the top of the level and begin spinning on a plane. Depending on when you hit B, Buzz will either fly left or right. Right will bring you to the end of the level. The only time you would need to go left is if you are playing in hard mode, or going for 100% as there are some coins that can only be collected by flying that way.

Level 2 Opening Text: "Al has taken Woody... Can Bo Peep Help?"

This level is a complete joke when playing on easy. All you have to do is run to the right while mashing B to go a bit faster. It's when playing on Medium or Hard that it becomes a bit awkward. On both of those difficulties you are required to collect all 30 coins before beating this stage. Do Not forget to grab those first 4 coins, as once you have jumped down to the main stage they will be unaccessable and you'll have to reset. Also be sure to jump off before you reach the ledge, as if you walk-up to it Buzz will slide down the pipe, and if run up to it he will stop in the air and fall cartoonishly. Both of these options are much slower then just jumping off. Also be sure to grab the coin at the bottom of the pipe. Inorder to beat the level on Medium or Hard you will have to go through a squence similar to that of the first level. At the start of the stage there is a skate board that is missing a tire. You really can't tell by the sprite, but trust me. Play through the stage until you come to a couch. Climb onto this couch, and then climb onto the table to the right of it. On that table you'll find Bo Peep holding a tire. Take the tire and run back to the skate board to start the automated squence.

Level 3 Opening Text: "Al is heading for Toy Barn... Rescue Hamm and find the key..."

There's no difference in how this level functions on different difficulties, but this is where the levels start getting a bit more complicated. Normally to beat this level you would have to collect three items. A Wrench, a Feather, and a Key. Then you would have to get to the door at the end of the level. With the help of a very simple damage boost the wrench can be skipped entirely. Just incase you wanted to know, the wrench can be found by climbing the cones to the right of the broken fire pump. From there climb onto the window ledge, and you'll find the wrench. Once that is done jump down to the left, and look for a lever where you can use the wrench. Just stop behind it, and Buzz will turn the lever, stopping the water spewing out of the broken fire pump. If you don't want to go through all of that, just climb the fire pump, and damage boost through the water. It'll only take one hit of damage to get through. Once on the other side you can slide down a water stream. At the end of the stream hit B to fly-up, and grab the Feather. From here you can continue the level normally. Eventually after climbing-up some steps and running to the right, you will come across a chicken statue. Climb onto the statue, and if you have the feather you will receive a key. Run to the right avoiding any obsticals until you find a large door. If you have the key when you stop infront of it the level will end!

Level 4 Opening Text: "Inside the store Buzz and the Toys split-up... Avoid Zurg's minions as you pursue Al..." From here-on out the levels become a lot more vertical and maze-like. This stage is the same on every difficuly with the exception of Zurg at the end. On easy Zurg takes 11 hits to defeat. On hard he takes 20. When playing on hard I would advice picking-up the upgrade that's just to the left of where you fight Zurg. It'll bring the number of hits down to 3 on easy, and 6 on hard. Also if you don't have the health to tank two hits of damage make sure to grab the air tanks at the start of the level. If not then you will die when you try to dive under water, which you have to do to dodge the enemy boats. After defeating Zurg you must run to the right, jump on a trampoline, and grab a zip-line to ride to the end of the level. Once your on the zip-line you can relax for about 10 seconds while you ride to the end. At the end you'll find an X-ray machine. It'll damage you on Medium and Hard, but on easy it's turned off.

Bonus 1 Opening Text: "Buzz takes the elevator to Al's apartment..."

If you're speed-running don't collect the coins as they waste time when being counted at the end. If you're not, go crazy.

Level 5 Opening Text: "Meet the 'Roundup' gang, Woddy's old freinds... Switch on the T.V. and find the airvent exit!"

This level is pretty simple. All you need to do is run all the way to the right, and turn-on the T.V. by walking up to it, and run back to the start of the level. There you'll fight Zurg, who operates exactly the same as he did on level 4. Zurg's health is the only difficulty dependent factor in this level. If you are going for 100% this level becomes a lot harder. There are a bunch of coins that can only be obtained by climbing the chair at the end of the level. Once ontop of the chair you can jump up to some shelves. Then just do some platforming while moving left. While doing this you'll need to avoid the attacks of "Woody's old freinds". The game will give you a battery half-way through the segment so it's not to tuff on easy or medium, but on hard it's pretty rough. Once through this segment you'll find yourself in the middle of the level. You can continue normally from here.

Bonus 2 Opening Text: "Al grabs Woody and leaves the apartment..."

This is just like Bonus 1, but you have to dodge Zurg's attacks while grabbing coins. If you're speed-running jump up, and try to get Zurg to kill you as quick as possible.

Level 6 Opening Text: "Als bag ends up at the airport luggage area... Find the exit-but look our for the prospector!"

The way that you can beat this level changes entirly depending on the selected difficulty. On easy there are three jet-packs on the stage. All you need to do is grab a jet pack, and fly as high as possible. Repeat two more times. You'll beat the stage in no time! On medium the floor moves, and there are only two jet packs. Use the first two like you did on did on easy. Now there's just a bit of difficult platforming. If you're fast enough it is possible to fall back onto the platform if you slip-off, but it's best to be careful and avoid this situation. This is easily the most difficult level on hard. There are no jet packs and health is scarce. You have to work your way to the top with little health, and a strict time limit. Playing this level on hard is actual torture, and I would not advise it to any sane man.

Level 7 Opening Text: "Woody and Prospector end up on the plane! Race with Bullseye to hop aboard the plane..."

This level is kind of interesting as it breaks the mold of any before it... That doesn't make it very good though. All you need to do is hold right, and occasionally jump to dodge boxes. It can be pretty frustrating as the boxes blend-in with the background. Not to mention there are boxes that looks exactly like the ones that you're supposed to dodge that are in the background to trick you. You can take one hit, and continue. The 1-2 hits of damage that are given at the end of the level are avoidable, but it's really difficult. There are 30 coins on this stage, and if you want them all you'll have to avoid taking any damage. Also once you reach three long white stripes on the ground there are no more boxes to dodge. When you jump at the end of the stage it makes the plane's tire come closer to you. If you're speed-running it's best to jump as much as possible as you can beat the level seconds faster!

Level 8 Opening Text: "The prospector has tied woody up... somewhere! Find and release Woody, then race to the exit..."

This level isn't the biggest in the game, but it does contain the most enemies and a final fight against the prospector! It's also the same on every difficulty. Just run the level normally, avoiding damage as much as possible. At some point you'll see a key on the wall, grab it, and later you'll see a safe with a flashing key hole. Walk-up to it, and the safe will deposit four coins. These are necessary for 100%. It's at this point that I should proably mention that Buzz runs slightly slower then the bullets he fires. If you know an enemy is coming-up it's best to duck fire, and then run forward before the enemy is on screen. This way they will be defeated for even bring given the chance to attack. At the end of the stage you'll come to a fight with the prospector. Shoot off his hat, and he'll walk right to pick it up. Repeat this a few times until he walks through a door behind Woody. Run up to and untie Woody, then fallow him all the way to the left. After you slide down a pole the leven is complete! Becarful when shooting the prospector. If you shoot him at the wrong time he'll squeeze in an attack before his hat flies off.

Level 9 Opening Text: "The toys must return before Andy gets home! Hurry to the pail..."

Okay! So this level is the last in the game. You're on a pretty tight time limit as indicated by the hour-glass beneath your health. On easy it's much easier then level 8, just run right until you come across a box with two tires on-top. Climb up them and onto the table. Then damage boost through the cactus and alien, and continue right until you come across a yellow pail. Climb in it, and ride to the top. Then just walk right into the wall, and you've beat the game! Congratulations! On medium and hard it's a different story... You must collect all 30 coins before completing the stage. With the time limit given that's already bad enough, but on hard you must also worry about your steadily dropping health. You cannot afford to take a hit on hard! The only advice I can give is to practice, and learn the stage in-order to collect the coins as fast as possible. I've done it multiple times now, and it's become pretty easy. It's probably not worth it though considering all you get for beating this game, even if it's 100% on hard, is a congratulations...

VI. Misc. Trivia

  • TS2 on the GBC was released just before the movie it's based on. Meaning that every key plot point was spoiled by this game.

  • On the IGN review of this game, by Craig Haris, it's stated that collecting all the coins on certain levels will award you with bonus levels. This is false. The coins will only get you a Buzz Lightyear Ticket, a 1-up, and extra points. There are no secrets or hidden levels in the game.

  • Many people beleive that the classic Toy Story character, Rex, has become a heratic and betrayed Buzz, as when you walk-up to him you take damage. He does not do this on purpose, he is very easily spooked, and runs back and forth in a panic. Please forgive poor Rex.

  • The same goes for Hamm. In level 1 he hurts you, and gives you a battery soon after. This is to teach the player how the health system works, and to watch out for batteries. On level 3 people have mistaken Hamm for hurting you, when it is actually the water spewing from the fire pump.

  • In the original credits the "special thanks" section is labeled under "Tiertex Credits". This may be a simple mistake, or Disney and THQ may just thank no-one.

  • This is a simple mechanic, but I feel that it must be pointed-out somewhere. You can fire Buzz's lazer much faster if you are crouching.
